Deforestation by the World Wild Life Fund is probably one of the better articles I have
read on the subject. The article is broken up into 4 parts an overview, causes, imparts, and what
theyre doing. The overview covers how 17% of the Amazon forest is gone and hoe 15% of
emissions are due to deforestation. The causes goes into illegal logging, fires, fuelwood
harvesting and how theyre problems. The impacts the say how it is affecting the plant in many
ways as well as changing peoples lively hood and affecting many animals. They are looking to
stop deforestation and illegal logging as well as creating protected areas for ecosystems.

I choose this source because it covers so many parts of deforestation. I also believe it
meets all the criteria because its done by the WWF which has experts considering this. It may
be a little bias but I due believe they would only use real facts. I also choose this because it was
the best article I looked at.

Deforestation rises is an article done by nature in 2015. The article is short only a single
paragraph but it does get a lot done in that paragraph. The article states that 5,831 square
kilometers of the amazon were lost in a year. This may sound bad but is not that bad since the
Brazilian government has brought down the rate of deforestation to one fifth of what it was in
2004.

This source is was chosen because it was done in 2015 which is pretty recent. It was also from
a data base so it must be credible and fit the criteria of a good source. This article was also
chosen because it shows that there are some decreasing deforestation.

This article titled Deforestation in Amazonia by William Laurance gives facts and plans to
stop deforestation in South America. William comes out firing saying the rate of deforestation is
2.4 million hectarcers a year. Which is equal to 11 football fields a minute which is just mind
boggling. The cause of this is increase of cattle ranching, soybean farms, and new highways
next to the forest. The Brazilian government is trying to stop this by increasing satellite
monitoring but keep hurting themselves by adding new highways near the forest making it
easier for loggers to get to and from there.

This source is good because it was taking from a data base so I know it meets all the
criteria. The source is about ten years old which is a problem but I think it is a small problem
compared to the amount of information that is given and how it relates deforestation to the
increase of highways which I did not know or think of before reading this source.

Choose satellites to monitor deforestation by Jim Lynch goes into a lot of detail about
deforestation and satellite monitoring. The article says that illegal logging is worth 30 billion to
100 billion and governments lose about 10billion in taxes. Wood from illegal logging decreases
timber price by 16%. The article then goes into talking about REDD+ which is a long-term plan
to help stop and slow down deforestation. The article then gets into the use of satellite
monitoring in REDD+. The satellites will take pictures of the forests to help stop illegal logging.

This source meets all the criteria of a good source. It was also published this year which
is a huge plus. I also found it on a database from the school which means its already been
verified and must be credible. This source also gets into REDD+ which will be huge in the future
when talking about deforestation.

This article title Deforestation by National Geographic is an interesting article covering several
parts of deforestation. First it tells facts of how much forest is being lost and how in a hundred
years at this rate there will be no more forests in the world. The leading cause of deforestation is
farmers clearing forests for more farm land and loggers. The article then talks of the problems of
deforestation. It states that deforestation causes loss of habitat for millions of species and that
80% of species live in forests. The article also says how we can stop deforestation by carefully
managing our forests.

I picked this source because it was interesting and fit all the criteria. The source was reliable,
creditable, and quality. I knew this because the article was done recently with new facts. I knew
it was credible because it was done by National Geographic which is a very trust worthy site. I
also picked it because it got straight to the facts and did not have extra random stuffin the
article.

Deforestation Rate Rises; Almost 2,000 Square Miles of the Brazilian Amazon Has Been
Razed in the Last 12 Months. The Increase Might Be Linked to U.S. Beef Imports by Claire
Rigby has a name that is right on the money. The article starts off by saying a Delaware size
part of the amazon rain forest is gone. This is because farmers have done so well selling cattle
that they are getting more and then need more land which they get by clearing parts of the
forest.

I chose this source because it shows a direct relation between America and
deforestation in the amazon. It may only be from buying beef but it is still a cause. I also choose
this source because it was from a database which means it should be credible and reliable. This
source also is interesting it its relation of beef and deforestation and that is why I chose it.

Deforestation and Drought by Jim Robbin of the New York Times is unique in how it
relates Droughts to Deforestation. This article claims that deforestation is a direct cause of
droughts in brazil. It also says that 20% of the Amazon forest is already gone and that if this
contributes it could cause droughts in other places such as California. The article does a good
job explaining the relation between deforestation and droughts. It goes on to say that a full-
grown tree in the amazon releases 1,000 Liters of water vapor into the air and the whole
Amazon releases close to 20 billion tons of water vapor a day. So, if more of the forest is gone
do to deforestation we can expect to see more droughts.

This source was picked because it was done by the New York Time probably the most
Read and Respected magazine in the world. Do to just it being from the time I felt it hit every
criteria. It was also relatively recent and I personally found it interesting and it taught me
something new I did not know. I am also considering this a magazine article because its from
the times even though I found it online.

The researching was not to hard I found two sources on the internet relatively esily and

fast. I struggled to find a journal source so I ended up just taking an online journal article from

the New York Times. I did start off having a hard time with the Data base but once I change

databases to NC live I had much more success. Another thing was that it was very easy to find

good reliable sources on In total things went pretty well when searching for sources. I had so

much success looking at sources that I did the two extra sources for extra credit because it was

not that much more work.

I honestly did not know a lot of the facts I came across when I first started. I did not know

the large amount of forest that have been cleared I also did not know the huge amount of

species that live in the forest. I also could not believe the amount of water vapor the amazon

releases.

My perspective did change from prior to the researches verses afterward. I was against

deforestation before my research but after all the research I am still against deforestation I am

just much more against it. After seeing how bad things really were I released things were much

worse.

The article that was the most helpful was World Wild Life Foundation article. This is

because the article was well organized and had a lot of information about everything to do with

deforestation. This article also had tabs you could click on easily to navigate to other parts of the

website. I was also impressed by how much they had written on deforestation. The website had

quality images and was very visually pleasing. Lastly the site had such interesting facts that

were tough to belive.

 The process of completing the annotated bibliography did teach me some things. It

taught me how to know if a source is a quality source. I was also able to learn how useful

database can be and how they have already been checked to see if they are good sources. This

whole prosses will certainly help me in the future especially if I do another annotated

bibliography. It will also help for any type of bibliography I do in the future and looking for

sources.

The pros of the non-traditional paper format is that it is different and it is nice to do

something that is not the same. It can also be that some people find the non-traditional paper

easier. The cons of the non-traditional paper format is also that it is different because people get

so used to the more traditional paper format and people get very good at writing it. People also

do not like change. I do not know if it is better or worse but there a pluses and negative to both

sides.

I definitely learned I lot on this annotated bibliography two things I learned happened to

be Student Learning Outcomes. One of these is critical reading. Though the Annotated

Bibliography learned to Locate, evaluate, and synthesize evidence from sources. I also learned

to use diverse text ranges, examining relationships between position and evidence,

organizational patterns, and both verbal and nonverbal elements. Lastly, I learned to use

reading to inquire, learn, and discover. I did learn another Student Learning Outcome which was

critical reflection. I learned to use writing as reflection and introspection. I also learned to

Illustrate reflection is essential to learning, thinking, and even communicating. Lastly, I leaned to

Demonstrate rhetorical awareness, writing processes, and acknowledge our own compositional

needs, wants, and purposes. The thing is a lot of that stuff I just learned during this great

reflection.
