Philosophy of Education

Education is the key to success in life and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of

their students -Soloman Ortiz

Education is essential for a thriving and advancing society and prepares students to be

model citizens of society. My belief on the purpose of Education is that it is the key to a

successful future for a child. Education prepares children for the future as they learn skills that

will help them for their future jobs and life. In school students not only gain these skills but they

also are taught to be model citizens and what they learn will help them in all aspects of life. It is

important for our students to be educated in that they will ask questions on how to make the

World a better place. Being education results in students having a broader perspective on the

World which will cause students to become innovative and empathetic thinkers. Education not

only stems students to become critical thinkers but help students build integrity as well. Martin

Luther King Jr. once said, The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to

think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.

My personal philosophy on education focuses on teaching my students to be model

citizens and creating an environment where my students are not afraid to critically think. I want

to accomodate to all of my students needs including figuring out way to accomodate auditory,

visual and kinesthetic learners. Growing up as more of a Visual and Kinesthetic learner, I needed

to see something and trying it myself to grasp the material. I believe that doing experiments and
exploring ways to involve dance can help all students needs. I believe that not only knowing a

students learning needs is important but also their social needs. I believe that understanding a

students background is the key to a students learning. Knowing what is going on in a studentss

life is crucial because as their teacher, I might be the only stable adult in their life. Instead of

judging a student with bad behavior, I want o be able to understand what is going on with the

student. I do not believe that any child is a bad: student, I believe that they are simply

misunderstood or are lacking the attention they need at home, in which causes them to act out. I

want my classroom be a learning environment that is inviting and judgement free. When in a

classroom a child should feel like it is okay for them to make mistakes. If a child is in a

classroom and they feel judged and scared they cannot learn and grow to their full potential.

Social justice in a classroom is essential in our society. Every student deserves to learn

equally and to not be cast out because of their differences. To achieve social justice I believe that

children need to be taught in a way where they cannot only learn about a problem but be able to

solve it. Simply informing a student about a problem is not sufficient enough. I believe they need

to be taught to take action on the problem at hand. Students need to be prepared in a way where

they can view the world as a whole and be able to take action against oppression and inequality

instead of simply being informed on it. The more students know about different cultures and

aspects to society that are foreign to them the more open minded and pro-active they can

become. Many believe that young students cannot grasp such immense issues such as social

injustice. However, being taught from the start of their education to strive for equality by

learning about past and current events will prepare them to gain affinity for the World.
The method of teaching that I believe is most beneficial is inquiry based learning. I

believe that the way students should be taught in a classroom should not be to simply

memorizing the content given to them. I believe that every subject in the K-12 curriculum is just

as important as the other. As a society huge emphasis on Math and Science were placed due to

the jobs that were at high demand. However, the future the World holds now is an innovative one

and no one truly knows where the job force is headed. I believe teaching students to create

experiments and to critically think by breaking every down and asking questions is the way to

prepare students for their future. I also believe it is important to teach all of the subjects equally.

Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Education and History are just as important as English,

Math and Science and it is important to distribute time on all these subjects equally. Every

student has a different skill set and learns differently. Not every student will want to become an

engineer or scientist so it is important to give them the freedom to explore every subject to let

them see what their forte is.

I believe that excellent teachers help prepare children for the future. To become an

excellent teacher I believe I need to be multiple things. First of all I believe I need to self

reflective. I need to be aware of all that I am doing and not be afraid to grow and be flexible.

Next I need to be patient and understanding. I need be able to understand my students by learn

about them and where they come from. Finally I believe I need to be passionate about what I am

doing. Growing up my Mom was a teacher. She's been working since the 1980s and is still

working to this day. Everyday since she started she loves what she does. Even when the times

have gotten hard she is thankful for her job because she is passionate about her students and the
work being a teacher. I believe having all these qualities will help me become an excellent

teacher.
