RHOPLEX SG-20 Acrylic Vehicle for High Quality Semigloss Latex Paints

Description

RHOPLEX SG-20 is a 100% acrylic binder designed for premium performance interior and exterior semigloss and
satin paints, but can be used for gloss enamels as well. Paints based on RHOPLEX SG-20 have been shown to yield
outstanding alkyd adhesion, block resistance, stain resistance, and exterior durability. In addition, RHOPLEX SG-20
also is an easy to formulate binder with good slurry compatibility, rheology modifier (HEUR or HASE) compatibility,
and flow and leveling.

RHOPLEX SG-20 was developed specifically for use in both interior and exterior semigloss paints. It was designed
to yield improved gloss and adhesion to gloss alkyd, combined with the flexibility to be formulated with dry or
slurry titanium dioxide, and with HEUR or HASE thickeners. RHOPLEX SG-20 has very good block, stain, and
chemical resistance. We expect RHOPLEX SG-20 to show excellent exterior durability based on its all-acrylic
composition, and initial data from RHOPLEX SG-20 analogs show very good results at 3 years exposure.

Formulation Guidelines

Dispersants

The type and level of pigment dispersant play an important role in attaining a desirable balance of rheology, gloss
and stability in paint formulation.

In formulations using HEUR thickeners such as ACRYSOL RM-2020 NPR as the primary thickener, TAMOL 165A
(polycarboxylic and copolymer) at a level of 0.85% (active ingredient) on pigment provides a good balance of
overall properties. TAMOL 731A is a satisfactory alternative.

Cellulosic thickeners will reduce flow when used with small particle size emulsions, such as RHOPLEX SG-20, and
are not recommended for use as the primary thickener.
Cellulosics can be used as co-thickeners, however use levels should be kept to a minimum and more success can
be obtained with lower molecular weight grades.

Pigments

The choice of proper titanium dioxide grade is an important factor in achieving desired balance of appearance and
resistance properties. A major advantage of RHOPLEX SG-20, is the compatibility it offers with a wide variety of
slurry grade titanium dioxides.

ROPAQUE OP-96 opaque polymer is a synthetic pigment which is engineered to optimize hiding in architectural
coatings. It enables the formulator to improve properties and realize cost savings. ROPAQUE OP-96 can be
effectively used in semigloss formulations based on RHOPLEX SG-20.

Coalescents

Texanol is a recommended coalescent for use with RHOPLEX SG-20, and levels in the range of 7 to 10% on binder
solids are adequate.

Preservatives

Formulations based on RHOPLEX SG-20 can be effectively preserved with KATHON LX 1.5% microbicide. KATHON
LX 1.5% protects the paint through storage, transport and end-use. The recommended level of addition is 25 ppm
or 1.65 lbs per 1000 lbs paint.

Mildew Protection

For exterior applications the use of an effective paint film mildewcide is recommended.

Tinting Systems

Tinting systems such as the Nuodex 888 from Hls can be satisfactorily used with RHOPLEX SG-20.

Primer Recommendations

A primer is recommended for use with gloss and semigloss enamels over bare wood and other problematic
substrates.
