ABSTRACT

The objectives of this experiment are to determine the absorbance of solutions at different
concentrations and also to determine the concentration of given sample. In this experiment,
copper sulphate,CuSO4 , distilled water, 500 ml volumetric flask, 100 ml volumetric flasks,
disposable glass pipettes(minimum 6), and 10-mm path length quartz cell are needed. There
were a few steps we already taken in this experiment. Firstly, prepared a CuSO4 stock
solution of 14 g in 500 ml distilled water and prepared four sample solutions in 100 ml
volumetric flasks by diluting with different sample concentration of 14, 7, 3.5 and 1.75 g/l.
Then, measured the absorbance of distilled water and used it as reference. We proceeded by
measured the absorbance values at 800 nm of stock solution (C1) and others diluted solutions
and labelled the others as C1 until C5. We continued to another steps by weighed small amount
of NaCl between 0.1>x>0.5 mg volumetric flask and filled the flask with the 14 g/l solution.
Labelled this sample CA. The step for CB and CC and measured the absorbance all three
sample. As the result from this experiment, the absorbance values of sample solutions (C1, C2,
C3, C4 and C5) by using different concentration which is 14, 7, 3.5 and 1.75 g/l we observed
the absorbance values of C1 was 1.404, C2 was 0.718, C3 was 0.168, C4 was 0.170 and C5 was
0.092. In a nutshell, this lab succeeded in illustrating the use of UV-visible spectrophotometer
to analyse the concentration of sample given and also determined the absorbance of solutions
at different concentration. UV-visible spectrophotometer measures the absorbance or
transmittance from the UV range to which human eye is not sensitive to the visible
wavelength range to which the human eye is sensitive. Theoretically, the results of this
experiment showed the concentrations of solution and absorbance of the concentration of
solution are decreasing gradually. The hypothesis shows that the lower the concentration of
solution, the lower the absorbance of the given sample. The hypothesis obtained is correct.
