Audience profiling

Audience Profiling is splitting your audience into groups, so you can have a group
of different ages, sex, race and it just makes it easier to pick a target audience.
Different audience types have different needs.

Socio-economic status
The socio-economic status basically means the hierarchy of the rich and
educated. It all depends on where you are economic wise, but also socially,
whether people know you and your income or not. The socio-economic status of
families are split into three groups, obviously being the high class, the middle
class and lower class. You are split into these depending on how much money
you have, whether you have had good education or have a top job.
Research on socio-economic status has shown that the people in the lowest class
are there mostly because of illnesses such as diseases, schizophrenia, arthritis
and many more physical and mental illnesses. Any physical illness could be
caused by their workplaces environment as they may work in a dark, damp place
for hours, meaning they get no fresh air, warmth or daylight, causing them to
catch illnesses. Mental illness may come from genes of previous family members.
In the higher class families, their main priority is their childrens education, or the
parents occupation whether they have a well paid job. However, the low class
families have completely different priorities, its more about whether they are
able to pay for food and shelter or not. Young girls in the poorer communities are
also more likely to be raped or kidnapped, making it unsafe to live there for
them.

This is a chart of socio-economic status. It shows the occupations of upper

middle class to the lowest class.
I can't really link socio-economic status into my movie trailer as it's about how
people live and how wealthy they are. If I were to, I'd have to show clearly in my
trailer the wealth of the family/couple, whether they are or not.

Psychographics
This is the research on peoples personal interests, lifestyles, opinions and
personalities, so the person as a whole. When creating anything with a target
audience, creators have to consider their audiences reactions to certain things.
Researchers carry out their research on their audience so they can get a detailed
view of what their audience wants. Their overall research on the audiences
interests, opinions and personalities will then be tied in and connected to where
they work/live, their age/gender and what education they are/have been in to
create the more detailed overview.

To apply this to my film trailer may be difficult. I could find out my audiences
reactions to it after showing the trailer by using a survey or interview how people
found the trailer to get their reaction.

Geo-demographics
This is the research of humans, basing the study on where they live. This means
the characteristics of someone based on their area or whether they live close to
a certain address or in a certain neighbourhood. It is proven that two people who
live in the same neighbourhood have more similar characteristics than two
chosen at random. This could include their jargon, which is the words and
phrases they use which people outside of their neighbourhood/area won't
understand. This all comes from being around each other often and therefore
picking up these words and phrases.

I could use geo-demographics in my film trailer to show the audience where the
characters live. For example, they live in Dublin and Los Angeles so I could show
this by putting recognisable places in it.

Age
Audience age is a good example of profiling. The way a company advertises or
markets their product could be based on their target audiences age. You could
say that young children will be drawn to bright colours, animation, music,
animals and will understand short, simple sentences. They wouldnt be drawn to
dark, mysterious colours or styles. When watching an advert for a new children's
toy, you realise how the tone of voice changes from when they're explaining the
toy (aimed at children) and how it works to when they start talking about what
the parents need to know like how the batteries are sold separately.
However, middle aged-elder people will be drawn to more what is said on the
advert and if there's any way they can relate to it. Theyre more interested to the
mature adverts which use words children wouldnt understand. It seems that
elder people wouldnt really mind what the style is, as long as it isnt too loud
and in your face, but its more tame for their eyes and hearing.
This is all about your target audience. For example, if youre writing for The
Guardian newspaper, you need your language to be more formal as the type of
people who read this newspaper are quite well educated, serious talking people.
On the other hand, if youre dfdwriting a children's book, you need to have a
more informal style of writing with basic wording so the child then understands
what it means.
Awareness comes almost naturally as you wouldnt go up to a baby using
standard English and you wouldnt talk to a businessman or a head teacher using
informal, chatty language as that isnt how youll catch their attention so when
picking out an audience you need to pick an audience which you know will
become interested from your advert.

My target audience age wise is most ages, so around teenagers to any adult age.
As Love, Rosie is a 15, it could be aimed at anyone over the age of this. I have
shown that this film is a 15 in my trailer by showing that there is romance which
the young may not be as interested in as the film as older people are. Also, the
trailer shows that the main characters are adults so the younger may not be as
interested as they are unable to understand it as they have no one to relate to.

Gender
Different sexes may rely on what actually appeals to them. Women can watch
sports but it is mainly targeted at men as more of them are interested in sports
than women. Its the same for makeup, a few men will be interested in makeup
but most of the female population wear makeup so thats who companies will
advertise towards, but also have to take sexism into consideration.
There may be gender based movies out there. Rom-com films such as Pretty in
Pink, Clueless and Love, Rosie are targeted more at females because of the use
of romance in these films, this is because women like to picture themselves in
the main woman characters shoes which'll make them feel the emotions. On the
other hand, action and adventure is more targeted at men, so films like The Dark
Knight and Lord of the Rings fall into these categories. Obviously, men can still
watch rom-coms and women can still watch action and adventure but
stereotypically, these genders usually go for these categories.

Sexual orientation
Someone's sexual orientation means whether they're gay which is liking the
same sex, straight which is liking the opposite sex, bisexual which is liking both
sexes or pansexual which is liking someone regardless of gender. There is also
asexuality, which is having a lack of sexual feelings to either genders.
In movies, a straight couple is most commonly used as the main couple. In the
movie trailer for my chosen film Love, Rosie, each couple in it are straight,
including the main couple. In the trailer, it needs to be shown that the main
couple are a straight couple so people wont get confused on the sexuality.

Regional identity
The regional identity of someone means where they come from. In the UK and
Ireland, we have England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Each one of these
countries have their own stereotypes in the real world. For example, foreign
countries associate England with tea, the Queen and football, whereas they
could then associate Ireland with leprechauns and luck. Scotland is more kilts
and bagpipes and Wales is sheep. Film companies want to aim their movies at
each and every reign without offending people too much.
If you want to go deeper into regions, you'll find out that people separate
England into the North and the South. The South all supposedly know Queen
Elizabeth and often go to drink tea with her. They are known as the posh part of
England. Whereas the North of England is known for chips and gravy, and being
a rough yet friendly area in England.
In the film trailer, their home town is Dublin, Ireland. It shows that they have the
typical British humour that we have.

Mainstream
Mainstream is something that is quite popular and that most people know what it
is. This is usually a word to use when discussing music or films. For example,
people could say that some mainstream music is chart music like Ed Sheeran as
he's the most listened to artist of this day, with all his new album in the top 50.
It's the same with films, the newer films will have the most promotion, therefore
more people will want to go see it if the trailer makes it look good, making the
film become mainstream.
Love, Rosie became quite a mainstream film. The official trailer on YouTube has
currently over 6.1 million views, and the box office sale managed to get an
average of $26 million meaning that if each person who went to watch the film
minimum $10 each, around 2 million went to watch it at the cinema.

Alternative
Alternative is the opposite of mainstream. Alternative is less known interests and
tastes of people. In music, alternative is more indie bands like James or the
Happy Mondays which were both Manchester bands. They were only really
popular in Manchester. It's similar with film trailers. Similarly, there are
alternative films the ones which aren't really shown about or promoted as much
as films like Beauty and the Beast, but still have trailers shown, mostly on social
media.
On the left is the real film poster for the Dark Knight, and on the right is an
alternative film poster, probably made by a fan.

Niche
This is a small, select audience who have a unique interest of whatever theyre
interested in. you could say this is similar to alternative, but its more putting a
label on people. For example, whoever watches and likes Love, Rosie may be the
type of people who are into romantic films. This could be the same for people
who are into films like Sinister, theyre into horror films. You can also say the
same for music. People who really like Drake are into R&B and may like Kendrick
Lamar. Its basically a group of people who have the same interest.
