The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) is over 150 years old and it celebrated its anniversary with all stations hosting an Open House on last Saturday in the Bronx. In the 12th
Council District, Council Member Andy King (5th l) visited with the Firefighters, Paramedics and EMTs. King said it was an exciting and educational experience to learn from New
York's Bravest about fire and life safety as he toured the stations, listened to departments history and tried on FDNY clothing and apparatus. The event was free and open to the pub-

nounced on April 14 - that David Hardy,
22 of 269 Franklin Ave., Mount Vernon
was arraigned on an indictment before
Judge Barry Warhit and charged with: sev-
eral charges including the murder of thir-
teen year old Shamoya McKenzie.
On Dec. 31, 2016 at approximately
2:28 p.m., the victim and her mother were
driving eastbound along E. Third St. in
Mount Vernon when three shots were fired
by the defendant from a handgun at a mem-
ber of a rival gang. The intended target was
struck twice.
At the time of the shooting, the victim
was sitting in the front passenger seat of her
mothers car when a single bullet smashed
through the rear passenger window striking
the victim in the head.
The victim was taken to Mount Vernon
Hospital where she was pronounced dead a
short time later.
An intense investigation by the F.B. I., the
Mount Vernon Police Department and the
Westchester County District Attorneys of-
fice resulted in the arrest of the defendant on
Jan. 15, 2017.
The defendant pled not guilty and re-
mand continues. He faces up to twenty-five
years to life in state prison. His next court
date is May 16, 2017.

Extradited Jamaicans Lottery Scammers Appear in US

BISMARCK, N.D:

in what authorities say is a multi-million-dol-
lar lottery scam that victimized dozens of
Americans.
The case began some six years ago with
a phone call to an elderly widow in a small
North Dakota town.
In September 2011, Edna Schmeets, 86,
of Harvey, North Dakota, received a call from
a man who told her she had won $19 million
and a new car, and needed only to pay taxes
and fees. She lost her life savings of more
than $300,000 to the scam. Word eventually
reached the FBI, and authorities opened a
case in 2012.
Authorities allege the sophisticated scam
bilked at least 90 mostly elderly Americans
out of more than $5.7 million. Fifteen people
each are charged with 66 total counts of con-
spiracy, wire fraud, mail fraud and money
laundering.
They are accused of calling victims, persuad-
ing them to send money, and wiring the
money to bank accounts in Jamaica. Author-
ities have dubbed the case "Operation Hard
Copy," a reference to lists of prospective vic-
tims' contact information used by scammers.
Prosecutors say Lavrick Willocks mas-
terminded the scam and operated it out of a
mansion where he lived with his mother,
Dahlia Hunter. Authorities say others handled

counts including Attempted Murder, As-
sault, Robbery and Criminal Possession of a
Weapon stemming from a violent crime spree
in the Wakefield section of the Bronx that left
a U.S. Postal Service employee grazed by a
bullet.
The defendant, Clarence Brooks, 27, of
East 229th Drive, was arraigned on May 2,
2017, before Bronx Supreme Court Justice
William Mogulescu. He was continued re-
manded and is due back in court on July 26,
2017.
Brooks was indicted on Attempted Mur-
der first and second degree, Attempted Assault
first degree, second and third-degree Assault,
three counts of second-degree Menacing, first
and second-degree Reckless Endangerment,
first-degree Criminal Use of a Firearm, two

Powell has 97 such runs. The athlete, who

recorded his 97th sub-10 clocking with 9.94
seconds in an IAAF Diamond League race

George Nooks
arrested on
drug charges

KINGSTON, Jamaica:
he police last Friday reported that pop-
ular entertainer George Nooks was ar-
rested and charged with breaches of the
Dangerous Drugs Act.
The police reported that 56-year-old
Nooks of Widcombe Heights, Kingston 6
was spotted acting in a suspicious manner
by lawmen on an operation in his commu-
nity shortly after 9:00 pm.
He was accosted and a bag he was
carrying searched. The bag was found to
contain just under two ounces of cocaine.
He was subsequently arrested and charged.
He was offered bail in the sum of
$80,000 and is to appear in the Kingston
and St Andrew Parish Court on Wednes-
day, May 17.
Nooks is well known for songs such
as Money in My Pocket and his cover of
Al Green's I'll Be Standing By (as God Is
Standing By).

T he Health Department on May 2, an-

nounced that restaurant letter grading
has improved food safety in New York City
as more restaurants than ever before are
earning an A grade at the beginning of
their inspection cycle. Greater compliance
with food safety standards has coincided
with a marked decrease in reported salmo-
nella infections, which often result from
eating contaminated food.
There has also been a 41 percent drop
in sanitary violations from the peak in fiscal
year 2012.
Launched in July 2010, the restaurant
letter grading program has incentivized city
restaurants to improve food safety prac-
tices. Today 93 percent of the citys 24,000
restaurants are posting an A grade, up
from 81 percent in the first year. Today a
record high 62 percent of restaurants are
earning an A on their initial inspection,
which means they dont need to be in-
spected again for a full year.

than $20 billion celebrating Mothers
Day last year. The average American was said
to have spent about $170, according to the Na-
tional Retail Federation.
Obviously, we are remembering our
mothers. Yet each year I am faced with the
same question: What should I get my mama
for Mothers Day? How do I show my love?
Sometimes, to be quite honest, I get stuck. So
this year I reflect: What do I want for Mothers
Day? What makes me feel special? If youre
stuck, here are three things most moms would
love for you to do:
1. Relieve her of her duties.
Im a wife, mother of two, human puppy
mama, daughter, granddaughter, friend and
teacher. Like all mothers, Im busy. Busy
transporting kids, cleaning messes, giving ad-
vice, lending a hand, working a job, doing
laundry and attending meetings and events.
Nothing says, I love you, like walking into
the house and finding my husband has already
cleaned it. I love when my son or daughter
does chores without being asked. This
Mothers Day, relieve Mom of her usual list
of to-dos by making it your responsibility.
Plan the meal. Do the laundry. Help her catch
up on something for work. Galatians 5:13

Rochelle Bent promotes positive community development

R ochelle Bent served as an Advisory
Neighborhood Commissioner (ANC)
and Chair of ANC 7E from 2015- 2017. She
has worked on all aspects of civic engage-
ment.
As a Commissioner, Rochelle convened
public meetings to address a wide range of
policies and programs affecting southeast
District of Columbia neighborhoods, includ-
ing traffic, parking, and renovation of recre-
ational facilities, street improvements,
economic development opportunities, police
protection and Green initiatives.
Rochelle is no stranger to the field of
public service and public administration; she
has more than 10 years of experience in this
field. She had the pleasure of serving as a
Student Aide for the then New York State At-
torney General Andrew Cuomo, where she
focused on intergovernmental relations in
eight Western New York counties. Rochelle
dealt with the diverse concerns of con-
stituents in the community within those re-
gions, where she became adept at operating
with the proper mix of authority, diplomacy,
and tact.
As a special projects coordinator in
DeKalb County Government (metro Atlanta
region), Rochelle coordinated all aspects of
updating policies and standard operating
procedures for the local airport and county
administration. Rochelle was very active in
the Atlanta community from the Public Ad-
ministration Student Association and having
also supported local advocacy efforts with
SCLC/W.O.M.E.N Inc. coordinated regular
communications with advocates and coali-
tion members and developing opportunities
for recruiting new advocates.
Most recently, she worked for the Pa-
tient Centered Outcomes Research Institute,
Rochelle Bent helping patients understand their healthcare
by coordinating workshops educating over
400 participants to understand advancements
in the field as well as better methods to in-
corporate Patient Reported Outcomes
(PROs) into Electronic Health Records
(EHRs). She also served in AmeriCorps
Hands on Atlanta as a Service Leader, earn-
ing her the Presidential Volunteer Service
Award.
Rochelle is a native of the Bronx, New
York and relocated to Washington, DC in
2012 after completion of her Master of Pub-
lic Administration with a concentration in
community and economic development
from Clark Atlanta University. Rochelle
now focuses on issues concerning commu-
nity and economic development in order to
one day specializes in program management
leadin community development initiatives.

What Is Hair Loss?
H air grows everywhere on the human skin
except on the palms of our hands and the
soles of our feet, but many hairs are so fine

Diets are made up of three main components, carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Each of these
components impact your body differently, and all three are needed in differing amounts to
keep your body healthy. Some may have heard that too much sugar or carbohydrate can lead
to weight gain. Therefore, many are trying to cut back on carbs. This is hard to do because
most of the foods we consume are carb-rich. So what should we replace those carbs with?
*Remember we cant take away too many calories in the diet without replacing them with
something else, because if you go too low on your calories you can gain weight too!!

Protein is an excellent option, that many of us dont get enough of!

For an adult, many would say that an ideal split of calories is 50% of
total daily calories from carbohydrate, 30% from fat, and 20% from
protein. So how much protein does that add up to? Wellfor a
person on a 1600 calorie diet, that would amount to 80 grams of
protein. Are YOU getting that much?

Lets take a look..

Greek yogurt averages about 12-17

g of protein per serving, while 1
regular Yoplait yogurt gives you 4 ounces of ground beef

fice that there are two options for
claiming the Home Office Deduc-
tion. The Home Office Deduction is
often overlooked by small business
owners.
As part of National Small Busi-
ness Week (April 30-May 6), the IRS
is highlighting a series of tips and re-
sources available for small business
owners.
Regular Method
The first option for calculating
the Home Office Deduction is the
Regular Method. This method re-
quires computing the business use of
the home by dividing the expenses of
operating the home between personal
and business use. Direct business ex-
penses are fully deductible and the
percentage of the home floor space
used for business is assignable to in-

square feet. Choosing this option re-
quires taxpayers to complete a short
worksheet in the tax instructions and
entering the result on the tax return.
There is a special calculation for day-
care providers. Self-employed indi-
