INTRODUCTION

You're trying your best to enjoy your activities (indoor or outdoor), but a constant

swarm of mosquitos falls over you. The threat? A piece of your skin, leaving behind an

itchy red welt and even a serious illness. As you swat madly, you notice that others

seem completely unfazed, could it be that mosquitos prefer to bite some people over

others?

Mosquito-borne diseases are one of the major menaces in the Philippines. It has

been said that mosquitoes cause more human suffering than any other organism. Over

one million people worldwide die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Since

Mosquitoes carries one of the most feared diseases known to humankind. We need to

protect ourselves and the best effective means is prevention (protecting individuals from

mosquito bites.)

Many people have heard of essential oils but dont know precisely what they are

and what they have to offer. In short, essential oils are natural (or organic) compounds

come from distilling or extracting the different parts of plants, including the flowers,

leaves, bark, roots, resin and peels.

Citronella Oil is a grass that mainly grows in some Asian countries. It has a rich,

crisp lemony aroma and thus bears the name Citronella. The essential oil of citronella is

extracted from two varieties of citronella. The first one is the Ceylon variety, whose

scientific name is Cymbopogon Nardus and the second one is Java variety, called

3
Cymbopogon Winterianus in botanical terminology. In both cases, the essential oil is

extracted by steam distillation of the fresh plant. According to a paper in

the International Journal of Advanced Research, citronella oil is noted for its efficiency in

repelling mosquitoes it provided about two hours of repellency in the study.

It may help in repelling the dreaded Aedes aegypti, a species of mosquito that spread

diseases like dengue fever, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Apart from being used on

humans, citronella oil is also used to help keep ticks away from livestock and pets.

Lemongrass oil is extracted through the process of steam distillation of dried

lemongrass. Lemongrass is known by the scientific names Cymbopogon Citratus or

Andropogon Citratus. The oil is yellow to amber in color and has a very fresh, citrus-like

aroma that smells like a very sweet fresh grass. It is also known for its ability to repel

insects, such as mosquitoes and ants, due to its high citral and geraniol content.

Peppermint Oil is derived from spearmint and water mint (Mentha aquatica).

The essential oils are gathered by steam distillation of the fresh aerial parts of the

flowering plant. The most active ingredients include menthol (3545%) and menthone

(1030%).

The essential oil is often used as a home remedy for stomach problems, muscle pain,

and headaches. Aside from being medical remedy, it is also used as natural bug

repellent- Ticks arent the only bugs that hate peppermint oil. In fact, ants, spiders,

cockroaches, mosquitos, mice, and even lice will be repelled.

4
Lavender oil is extracted mostly from the flowers of the lavender plant, primarily

through steam distillation. The flowers of lavender are fragrant in nature and have been

used for making potpourri for centuries. Traditionally, lavender essential oil has also

been used in making perfumes. The oil is very useful in aromatherapy and many

aromatic preparations and combinations are made using lavender oil. The smell of

lavender essential oil is potent for many types of bugs like mosquitoes, midges, and

moths. An application of some lavender oil on the exposed skin when outside will

prevent these irritating bites. Furthermore, for bug bites, the lavender essential oil has

anti-inflammatory qualities that will reduce the irritation and the pain associated with bug

bites.

Mosquito repellent seems to be the answer to preventing mosquito bites that can

reduce the mosquito-borne disease. According to our research, we found out that most

of the mosquito repellent offered in the market contains and smells like chemical. We

also discovered that inhaling a scent of harmful chemical may have hazardous effect to

ones health (chemicals like DEET or permethrin, both of which have documented side

effects with continued use.)

Considering all of this, SCENTIMENTAL FRAGRANCE CORPORATION

innovated a perfume with mosquito repellent called MOSCENTO It is a mosquito

repellent with an exciting fragrance by combining essential oils like citronella,

lemongrass, peppermint, lavender and so on, that is known to repel insects, especially

mosquitoes.
