This source comes from the Journal of Athletic training. The article is about a new rule

change in high school football that has been limiting the amount of contact done in practice. The

goal of this rule is to limit the total amount of hits that players are taking to the head. The article

shows the data before and after this new rule change was put in place.

The data given in this article gives me great data on the total amount of hits that players

are taking to the head. Once the new rule is put in place there is a large decline in the amount of

hits to players heads. The main group of players that are being affected in the most positive way

are linemen because they are the players who on average take the most hits to the head.

The source is a great because it is done by other athletic trainers throughout the country. I

personally have had a lot of contact with athletic trainers in high school and they would be some

of the best people to get this type of data and perspective from because they see it frequently. I

also believe it to be a good source because I got it from the ProQuest database off of the library

website.

This article gives a follow up to a former Sports Illustrated story on the state of high

school football in the United States. Three reporters went to towns in Kansas, Pennsylvania and

Georgia to see if the new knowledge on concussions from football had made a change in the high

school football world. What these reporters found were not necessarily facts, but the ability to

see what these players are now doing and have learned. One of the large things coaches have

seen change is that players use concussions as an excuse to get out of practice. Some of the

towns have seen less participation from players causing cutbacks.

This article relates to my inquiry project because it shows what players are now doing.

Not only are there less players, but players are beginning to manipulate the worry of concussions

by using it as excuses to get out of practice. This is a major problem because it then causes actual

concussions to not be taken as seriously.

To me this is a credible source because it comes from Sports Illustrated, a highly

respected magazine in the sports world, but it also comes straight from players and coaches. Data

can be tallied and research can be done, but the true toll that the concussion problem is having on

high school football can only come from the players and coaches dealing with it on a daily basis.

This article talks about a new helmet designed by VICIS, a company trying to design a

new helmet to make football safer. The new helmet has more layers of padding and protecton

than traditional helmets. Unlike other helmets that try to traditionally just absorb the impact, one

of the layers of the new VICIS Zero1 absorbs the impact and then rebounds it.

This is the first article I have been able to find on a new approach to making helmets

safer. This new company has been able to come up with a way to revolutionize or at least come

up with a different way to make helmets safer. Although the helmet is $1,500 I think has a great

way to make the game of football safer. This gives me something I have been searching for in my

inquiry, but not yet been able to find.

This is a reliable source because the author is a graduate of Columbia University and the

co-founder of VICIS is a neurosurgeon who is an M.D. with a degree from the University of

Florida College of Medicine. This article also features a video that has NFL wide receiver Doug

Baldwin backing the helmet.

This article is about a study on the return to play time for players in youth, high school,

and collegiate football. The article provides accounts of different teams at each level and

provides data on the amount of concussions and the amount of time between their injury and

return. It also gives the protocol for concussions along with the comparison across each level of

play.

This article gives valuable information to my inquiry project by providing me with

statistics on the return to play procedure, the amount of concussions in high school football,

along with tables providing percentages on how many players in the study suffered concussions.

The article also gives reasoning on how some athletes could return to play within 24 hours of

sustaining their injury.

All of the authors and people involved in this article have credentials that allow them to

speak on this topic. The lead author on this article, Dr. Zachary Kerr, holds a PhD in

Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The funding for the research

was also provided by the NCAA, USA Football, and the National Athletic Trainers Association.

This article gives a background on CTE. CTE is a neurocognitive disease that is

developed through repeated blows to the head. It can lead to dimensia and memory loss. The

disease is mainly found in football players, boxers, and hockey players. The disease can lead to

serious medicial issues as well as psychological ones.

This article definitely is relative to my inquiry project because CTE has been on the

minds of many football players and leading doctors in the concussion field. This disease has

killed many former football players because of them committing suicide. This article gives an

outlook on what could happen to football players if more safety precautions arent taken.

This is a credible source because all of the leading authors have degrees from

Universities and are qualified to discuss the matter.
