Day 3

Name: Jordan Adkins Date: February 17, 2017

Subject: Science Topic: Condensation

Grade: 2nd Length of Lesson: 45 min.

Introduction (Essential Question): What causes condensation to form?

Standard: Science
Cluster: Earths Systems
Objective: S.5GS.9 describe and graph the amounts and percentages of water and fresh water in
various resevoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth.

Specific Objective: Students will explain what causes condensation to form with 75% accuracy.

Method(s):
Students will learn through whole group instruction, guided practice, observations, discussions,
and independent practice.

Materials:
Large cups
Small cups
Syringes
Crushed ice
Pitcher of hot water
Thermometer
Rock salt
Spoons (5 ml)
Craft sticks
Notebook
Worksheet 28
Smartboard

Direct Instruction:
Review vocabulary: condensation, condense, dew, fog, frost, and water vapor.
Review condensation and what causes it to form.

Guided Practice:
Teacher and students fill large cup with warm water and places small cup filled with
crushed ice into the large cup. Ask students, What do you think might happen in the
water and ice system? Share observations. Steam should form on the side of the large
cup.
Ask students the two questions on pg. 379.
Suggest creating a colder surface for water vapor to condense. Measure the temperature
of the ice water and record temperature. The teacher then adds two 5 ml spoons of rock
salt and stirs. Record the temperature again.
Teacher visits each group and adds two 5 ml spoons of rock salt to each cup of ice.
Students will stir and then let it rest for 2-3 min. Then have students remove ice cup and
observe the bottom. They should find frost at the bottom of the cup. Share observations.

Differentiation:
Visual: Diagrams, projections on Smartboard, Video, Observations
Auditory: Discussions, Video
Kinesthetic: Hands-on condensation experiment

Lesson Closure:
Review condensation and what causes it to occur. Review vocabulary for the lesson.

Independent Practice:
Students will answer the essential question in the science notebooks after the completion of the
experiment. Students will answer the questions from worksheet 28 about the experiment in their
science notebooks.

Assessment:
Students will be assessed formatively throughout the lesson, checking for understanding.
Students will be assessed using the independent practice activity. Students who complete the
independent practice activity with 75% accuracy will achieve mastery of the objective.

Reflection:
The lesson went very well. Students enjoyed completing the experiment, and I enjoyed teaching
the lesson. I am thankful I had the materials prepared that way the lesson went smoothly and in a
timely manner. One thing I would do differently next time is have students record the
temperature of the ice water before and after adding the rock salt.
