Pure Substances vs Mixtures

Created by your SUPER DUPER Science Teacher

Narrated By Mr. Dodd while at home on his
barcalounger.
NEW UNIT ORGANIZATION
Before we start our
newest unit, we must
close Unit 3.

Fold the top corner of Remember, like my

every page in Unit 3. hair, neatness is
important.
Pure Substances vs Mixtures
Write this in the
margin!!!!
What youll learn...
-distinguish mixtures
from pure substances

-classify matter by its I bet the cool guy in

composition front of you will do
some experiments to
help you understand it
too!
Quick Review...
Physical Change Changing the physical
properties but
not the chemical
make-up of the
substance (usually
reversible)
Review # 2...
Chemical Change is the (usually)
irreversible change of
one or more reactants
into an entirely new
substance or product
with different
properties
Matter Tree, Oh Matter...

No singing! Your fantabulous science teacher

will make you a MATTER TREE during his
ingenious slide show.
Matter can be broken down into...
1. Pure Substances-
matter that has a fixed
(constant) composition
and unique properties.
Contains only 1 type of
element or compound;
Dont worry...Ill
homogeneous
explain some of this
later!
Pure Substances
Elements- 1. Exist only
building blocks of all in lab (but
other substances;
not our
homogeneous
science lab!)
2. Cannot be separated
any more (contains only
1 kind of atom).
Pure Substances
Compounds-
are substances that
can be separated into
simpler substances by Example: Water (see
ONLY chemical my snowflakes)
means; always
H2O = 2 Hydrogen
homogenous
and 1 Oxygen atoms
All Pure Substances are...
Homogeneous-
Contains uniform
(same) properties
and composition
(make-up)
No matter where you
throughout
look in the substance
it will be the same!
THAT WAS THE EASY SIDE
OF THE MATTER TREE!!!
You ready for the
tougher side...side two
(look at how well I
count!)?
Matter can be broken down into...
2. Mixtures-
Contains at least 2
PHYSICALLY combined
elements or
compounds; can be
homogeneous or I mean I am no Mr.
heterogeneous Bitondo, but at least
Im easy on the eyes!
Mixtures
-is the PHYSICALLY -This is a physical
combining of two or blending, not a chemical
more substances in blending.
which each pure - Parts of the mixture
substance retains its can vary
individual chemical
-Can be physically
properties
separated
Mixtures are in TWO groups
Homogenous- Heterogeneous-
has constant properties does not blend smoothly
and composition throughout and which
throughout (You should the individual
know this one already!) substances remain
distinct
Homogeneous
Solution- are Here are some
groups of molecules examples I know, tea,
that are mixed and salt water, Kool-aid,
evenly distributed in and air.
a system. Scientists
say that solutions
are homogeneous
systems.
Solutions are made up of...
Solutes- are the In my Ecto-cooler
dissolved substances
(ask Mom or Dad),
what is the solute and
Solvents- is the one
doing the dissolving
what is the solvent?
Heterogeneous
Colloid- are
solutions with
bigger particles Here are some
that dont settle examples I can think
when held still and of...milk, fog, clouds,
wont filter out. whipped cream and
jello.
Tyndall Effect
The Tyndall effect is light
scattering by particles in a
colloid or else particles in
a very fine suspension
Heterogeneous
Suspension- are Mr. Bitondo taught me
mixtures with even about suspensions
larger particles that
too...Italian Dressing,
settle when held still
and will filter out. If a muddy water, and dust
bottle says Shake Well it in the air.
is a suspension!
Ways to physically separate mixtures
With all of these you will need a
drawing!!!!
Magnet
Filter
Decant
Evaporation
Centrifuge
Do my armpits Chromatography
smell? Distillation
Magnets

Magnets can be used to pull out anything

with magnetism as a physical property
such as iron.
Filter
A paper filter, screen or natural
materials can be used to filter out solid
particles.
Decant
To pour so that only the liquid flows out and the
solids stay.
Evaporation
Evaporation can occur
naturally or you can use
heat to speed up the
process.
Centrifuge
A centrifuge is
the usage of a
piece of equipment
that spins to speed up the
process of separating two
immiscible substances.
Kobe Bryant and A-Rod had this done to their
blood to help heal injuries
Distillation
Distillation is the
technique of heating a
liquid to create vapor
which is collected when
cooled separate from
the original liquid. It
works best separaing two
liquids with different
boiling points.
Chromatography
The separation, especially
of closely related compounds,
by allowing a solution or other
mixture to seep through an
adsorbent (such as clay, gely, or
paper) so each compound becomes
absorbed and separates often in colors.
