Math 2 Lesson Plan

10th grade - Geometry Unit

Unit essential questions:

What are the similarities and differences between vertical angles and linear
pairs?
How are vertical angle and linear pair properties used in conjunction with
parallel lines and transversals?
What properties to triangles (and sets of triangles) have?
What information is needed in order to prove that two triangles are
congruent?

Lesson question:
What information is needed in order to prove that two triangles are
congruent?

Common Core or other appropriate standard:

G-CO.7 - Use the properties of rigid motions to show that two triangles are
congruent if and only if corresponding pairs of sides and corresponding pairs
of angles are congruent.
G-CO.8 Use congruence in terms of rigid motion. Justify the ASA, SAS, and
SSS criteria for triangle congruence. Use criteria for triangle congruence
(ASA, SAS, SSS, HL) to determine whether two triangles are congruent.

Lesson objective: Assessment:

Students will be able to look at sets of By the end of the lesson, students will
triangle pairs and decide if theres have completed either a graphic
enough information to prove that they organizer for vocabulary and examples,
are congruent, decide which type of a cut-and-paste activity for organization
congruency should be used, and will of congruent triangles, or a worksheet of
begin learning the process of writing a fill-in-the-blank proofs (all depending on
two-column proof. their level of understanding)

IEP goals addressed:

Students will increase the ability to reason about geometric figures and
properties and use models, coordinates, and transformational geometry to
solve problems as measured by NC state standards.
Students will recognize geometric shapes and their properties and prove
relationships between them.
Students will identify properties of congruence and symmetry in triangles and
quadrilaterals.

Opening:
Class will begin with a warm up based off of the test they just took on
Tuesday. This will be good review for them and will help them to correct any
mistakes they may have made on the test, which will also help them when
they go to do corrections.
After the warm up, the lesson will begin. Before we began reviewing for the
test, we started the Triangle Congruency lesson. Students took notes at their
own pace, with a graphic organizer to help them stay focused, and collected
all information needed for the lesson. Todays lesson will now be enforcing
those ideas and that information so that they fully understand it. By taking
their own notes, by hope is that it will be familiar to them when we review it
as a class. This will be done through PPT and activities based on their
individual level of understanding.

Procedure:
After reviewing the material as a class and going through the notes they took
last week, I will break the students up into groups based on their level of
understanding. I considered allowing them to choose what group they wanted
to be in based on the activity, but I want to be able to challenge some while
making sure others are in the correct place for their ability level.
While students are working, I will be going around to see how the students
are doing. If I see that they are flying though the tier that they are in, then I
will bump them up to the next tier to give them more of a challenge. If they
are in one of top two tiers and are really struggling, I will bump them down a
level. This will all be based on how well they are completing the activity and
how accurate their work is.

Tiered by Complexity:
Tier 1: (For those who havent quite grasped the concept of what is needed
in order to prove two triangles congruent). This assessment will be a form of
graphic organizer or foldable that will allow students another opportunity to
organize their thoughts and information from last weeks PPT. This will
hopefully give them another opportunity to grasp and process the information
in order to move up into another tier during the next lesson.
Tier 2: (For those who understand the basic concepts and vocabulary
associated with this lesson and can correctly (85% of the time) name the
congruency type used in order to prove). This assessment will be a cut-and-
paste style activity. Students in this group will each be given a chart, pre-
labeled with titles, that they will use to organize cut-out pictures of triangle
pairs. They will need to look at the pairs and decide which type of congruency
(ASA, AAS, SAS, SSS, or HL) would be used based on the information labeled
in the figure.
Tier 3: (For those that understand the information enough that they could
possibly handle a challenge. This will be my gifted student(s)). This activity
will be for those who want a challenge. They will be given a small packet of
proofs that are partially completed. They will also be given strips of paper
with possible statements and reasons that would fill in those blanks. Students
will be required to paste the strips into the correct boxes. This allows them to
see the options and choose, rather than coming up with the options on their
own (since this will be new for them). This group will be the smallest of the
three, but I know I have at least a couple students who have asked for a
challenge who could also be classified as gifted.

Closure:
To close the lesson, I will collect the finished work and let the students know
that they will have an opportunity during the next lesson to move into a
different tier, based on how they did in this one. I really want them to fully
understand these concepts, as they will be used in future math classes, so I
want to take a couple (if not more) days to cover this material.
Note: The tiers for the next day will be slightly different. There will be an
added higher tier if any of the students in tier 3 were successful and are
ready for another challenge. This tier will require them to fill out a partially
completed proof, but this time without the use of given options. They will
need to come up with them on their own this time. There will also be an
added lower tier (a tier 1.5), if needed, for those who were in the lower tier
who might not be quite ready to cut and paste into groups. Everyone else will
move up a tier after completing their activity from today.
