Etymology Corporation

The word corporation is derived from the Latin word corpus for body, representing a
body of people authorized to act as an individual. 1 The Romans recognizes a
corporation as having a collective identity distinct from that of any particular person who
owns or belongs to it.

Scholars have traced the precursors of the modern corporation to ancient Rome.

The Romans treated the Cities as the first corporations and extended over time to
certain community organizations called Collegia. These included artisan associations,
religious societies and social clubs formed to provide funerals to members. Most
Roman corporations served exclusively community or religious
purposes.2 A Collegium or college of priests had many of the rights and privileges
which the law gives to the modern corporation.3
