U.S multinational comporations employ over 7 milion people --- outside
the U.S
U.S multinational employ over 18 milion people in the united states ---
representing about 20 percent of the work force
Foreign corporation employ over 3 million americans

Market today know no borders. The very concept of domestic business has
disappeared. Modern organizations no longer have eny place to hide national
boundaries are not the santuaris they once were.business do not have the luxury
of focusing on their own littel world. They must adopt a global perspective.
As compaines rush to bicom global, more human resouces professionals
are being asked to nevigate through the whit-water rapid of a multicultural
workplace, complex marketa, and global competitors .beneath the turbulent
water are the hidden challenges of lost talent, inequites, and unknown. The
signals ,are warning, are often not seen or heard until it is too late, and the
damage is done. Moreover, navigating one river successfully is not guarantee of
succses on other just as one new global business experience rerely resamble

NEW TERMINOLOGY
There is a great deal of talk abaut exactly what it means to be global. For most
people,it means doing business in other countres . that could involve exporting,
licensing, and distribition agreements or foreign sourcing of technology, capital
facilities, labor , and material. The general public can live white language of
internatiomnal business,it is confusing.
Even among business people the term global corporation is often used
interchangeably with multinational
CROSS-BORDER MARGER RESULTS IN HEADACHES FOR A DRUG COMPANY
as evryone knows, swedes take off the entire month of july for vocation,
and italians take aff august. evryone in europe knows, that is,but apparently
hargly anyone in kalamazoo,michigan,does.
So is was that after the marger of two drug companiesupjhon and
pharmacia of sweden, with operations in italy---things got a bit confusd. American
executives scheduled meetings throughout the summer, only to cancel many
because their colleagues were basking at the beach.
Few observer anticipated what an obstacle culture would pose. The
average american who gets off the plane and plane and takes a cab into
stockholm is struck by the similarties. Most swedes speak english and enjoy the
same lifestyle as americans . it was a short honeymoon.
Work rules became a point of contention. At upjhone, a buttoned-up
company known for its strict HR policeas, all workers were tested for drug and
alchohol abuse; at pharmacias italian business center ,waiters poured wine
freedy every afternoon in the company dining room.
Management styles and HRM systems were very different, too italy became
the most volatile. Italys laws and unions made layoffs difficult.
In the end, pharmacia and upjhon says,it will meld the the different
cultures and systems and get on with ist growth plans. There is little doubt the
many cultural mix-ups that have strained managers at the merged company did
teach one painful lesson: though globalization is the biggest buzzword in
business, going global is a lot tougher that it looks.
Corporation (MNC) to describe a business with over seas operations. Other
kwonledgeable people define a global firm as one that attempt to standardize
operationsone size fits allbut that responds to national market deffirences
