About Al-Salam Institute

A CENTRE FOR ARABIC AND ISLAMIC SCIENCES

Al-Salam Institute (ASI) was established in Oxford, UK in 2006 as a means to facilitate

the study of Arabic and traditionalIslamic sciences for full-time students and working
professionals.
Through a combination of authentic Islamic scholarship and modern academic techniques, we
deliver our pioneering 6-year Alimiyyah Programme (also known as the Islamic Scholarship
Programme) in London and live online.

Our mission is to deliver the teachings of Islam through classical texts with a profound awareness
of the modern era. Our vision is to produce a new generation of leading thinkers and Islamic
scholars who are characterised by their sound knowledge of the authentic sources, independence
of mind in their application, and embodiment of religious virtue.

Foundation Level

The Foundation level in Classical Arabic and Islamic Sciences is

tailored for those students of Islamic knowledge who are just
beginning their journey.
The course provides a solid basis in Islamic scholarship through part-time
study with some of the most renowned and accomplished teachers in the UK,
including Shaykh Akram Nadwi.

The year-long course forms the first level of ASIs six-year Alimiyyah
Programme and can also be taken as an independent programme of study.

It is the most popular course at Al-Salam Institute, being the gateway and
most comprehensive course for students of knowledge who are keen to
cement their understanding of the fundamentals of the religion.

Students who successfully complete allmodules of the Foundation level

(including written assignments and examinations) will be awarded a
Certificate in Classical Arabic and Islamic Sciences.

to introduce students to hadith
studies and to derive points
of benefit from the prophetic
traditions. The style and method
of teaching will be to encourage
students to understand the essence
of the teachings of the Prophet
(saw), rather than to discuss any
legal injunctions stemming from

be touched upon at times). As

The author of Mukhtasar al-Quduri,
the Hanafi jurist Abul-Husayn al-
Quduri, was born in Baghdad in 362
A.H. / 973 C.E. and died on Sunday
5th Rajab 428 A.H. /1037 C.E. aged
66. Ibn Khallikan, Ibn Kathir, Ibn
al-Jawzi (and others) considered
him to be an utterly truthful
hadith narrator (saduq) which
is a testament to his knowledge
and memory in the field of hadith

The Study of usul al-tafsir, the

The author of the text, Ibn Juzayy

The text gives a sound, accessible
overview of the principles of
Quranic Exegesis in a simple Arabic
language, making it a perfect
introductory text for the beginner.
The text is a total 15 pages in length
and sets out a solid foundation in
the study of Usul al-Tafsir.
Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn
Muhammad ibn Ahmad Ibn Juzayy
al-Kalbi (1321 1357) was a scholar
and a writer of poetry, history, and
law from Al-Andalus. He wrote
many religious works such as his
Qawanin al-Fiqhiyyah (The Laws
of Jurisprudence) a comparative
manual of the jurisprudence of
the five Sunni madhhabs (Maliki,
Hanafi, Shafi`i, Hanbali, Dhahiri)
with emphasis on the Maliki school.
He is also famous for his tafsir
of the Quran, his book on legal
theory Aqrab al-Wusul `ala `Ilm al-
Usul (The Nearest of Paths to the
Knowledge of the Fundamentals of
Islamic Jurisprudence).

studies in the science of Quran
recitation (tajwid) will be able to

Similarly, etiquettes of a student of
knowledge is an essential point of
