A Guide for Achieving Flexibility in Highway Design

Context-sensitive solutions (CSS) reect the need to consider highway projects as more than just transportation
facilities. Depending on how highway projects are integrated into the community, they can have far-reaching impacts
beyond their trac or transportation function. CSS is a comprehensive process that brings stakeholders together in
a positive, proactive environment to develop projects that not only meet transportation needs, but also improve or
enhance the community. Achieving a exible, context-sensitive design solution requires designers to fully understand
the reasons behind the processes, design values, and design procedures that are used. This new AASHTO Guide shows
highway designers how to think exibly, how to recognize the many choices and options they have, and how to arrive
at the best solution for the particular situation or context. It also strives to emphasize that exible design does not
necessarily entail a fundamentally new design process, but that it can be integrated into the existing transportation
culture. This publication represents a major step toward institutionalizing CSS into state transportation departments
and other agencies charged with transportation project development. 2004. Paperback. 112 pp.

A Guide for Methods and Procedures in Contract Maintenance,

2nd Edition
This manual is intended for use early in a career in roadway and bridge maintenance and will assist in understanding
the processes, methods, and materials for maintaining bridge and highway systems. The maintenance eld is evolving
into its own engineering science, a combination of traditional civil engineering, industrial engineering, business
management, materials science, industrial psychology, and environmental science. This guide is the rst step in
documenting that transition; this text will guide the development of engineering managers at the start of the 21st
century. This version supersedes the Guide for Methods and Procedures in Contract Maintenance published in 1987.
