Hummus news you can use
When we first heard about the hummus-flavored Tic Tac candies promised
for Yom Haatzmaut, we were a bit suspicious. It sounded too bizarre to be
true. We wanted to wait to publish until we found corroborating evidence.
It turns out we were right to be suspicious. The announcement came on
March 31, which was April Fools Day on the Israeli clock.
So, no hummus Tic Tacs. At least not this year.
Were able to report, however, the latest incarnation of Americas growing
infatuation with hummus: Snyders of Hanover is now offering Classic
Hummus Filled Pretzel Sandwiches in our local New Jersey grocery aisles.
Its like Yom Haatzmaut every day, in a bag. LARRY YUDELSON

he said. I went to work at NewBridge on the Charles.
That location was brand new, and in order to live in the
senior living community, you had to be worth three mil-
lion bucks. It was pretty fancy. I spent 5 years working
with 300 sets of Jewish grandparents.
My major responsibility was ensuring 100 percent cus-
tomer satisfaction. It was not an easy job, but he loved it.
Among the challenges he faced, he said, was that unlike
in New York, where these kinds of places are owned and
staffed predominantly by Jews, in New England they are
staffed by people who know how to run them and might
or might not be Jewish.
I was the only Jewish person on the food and beverage
staff. It was another important step in his customer ser-
vice education. It was a great gig, he said.
At just about the time he moved over to NewBridge, I
was fishing one morning, early in the spring, he said. It
was early in the season, and we my friends and I, you

to see if the fish were around yet. It was late May, early

Maximum deposit amount is $3,000,000 per household. **Special bonus feature: A .25% simple interest rate bonus will be paid on each anniversary date of account opening on the lowest balance for that year
(anniversary date to anniversary date). No bonus is paid if the account balance is less than $2,500 on the anniversary date. Additional deposits during a given anniversary period do not affect the bonus interest
payment. Deposits made to the account on any anniversary date will be used to calculate the lowest account balance for the next anniversary period. The bonus interest is calculated on the lowest balance on
deposit from one anniversary date to the next anniversary date. Simple interest rate bonus is subject to change at any time after first anniversary date of account opening. Hypothetical example of how bonus
works: Assume an account is opened on January 12, 2017 for $50,000. A $10,000 withdrawal is made on July 12, 2017. No other withdrawals are made prior to the January 12, 2018 anniversary date. The low bal-
ance is now $40,000, so $100 in bonus interest will be paid on January 12, 2018.

salary dispute threatens
to disrupt Trump visit
Israels foreign ministry workers union has threatened
to disrupt Donald Trumps visit to Israel over a salary
dispute with the Israeli Finance Ministry.
The Foreign Ministry has declined to complete logis-
tical operations for Trumps visit, including position
papers, preparatory meetings, supply orders, visas,
diplomatic mail packages and other activities have not
been done, reported Yedioth Ahronoth.
The workers union said the Foreign Ministrys refusal
to cooperate with coordinating Trumps visit was insti-
gated by the Ministry of Finances contempt for an
agreement with Foreign Ministry employees.
The union claims the Finance Ministry neglected to
implement a new wage agreement two months ago and
has not taken any action to mitigate the crisis.

els ambassador to South Sudan, told Army Radio the NOW IN STOCK: Alesso Tropical Weight

In response to the Finance Ministrys purported lack
of action, the union distributed a directive to Foreign
Ministry employees, stating, We can only turn to the
path of aggressive organizational measures that will
harm the issues on the political and social agenda.
The Finance Ministry responded, In accordance
with the agreements reached, the matter is in legal

workers union is in a hurry to harm the foreign rela-

Can Trump survive Abbas?

T
here was something
of the motivational
speaker about Presi-
dent Donald Trump
as he welcomed Mahmoud
Abbas, the gerontocrat at the
helm of the Palestinian Authority
for the last 12 years, to the White
House on May 3.
At their joint appearance, Ben Cohen
Trump was confident and beam-
ing, and Abbas came across as eager and respectful. As Trump
surely knows, to sell something you need to believe in it and
to look like you believe in it. In tone and body language, both
leaders pulled that off in their comments on prospects for a
final Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, even if they came across as
overly self-conscious in doing so.
On the face of it, there is no doubting Trumps personal
investment in securing what he sees as the ultimate deal.
Over the course of my lifetime, Ive always heard that per-
haps the toughest deal to make is the deal between the Israelis
and the Palestinians lets see if we can prove them wrong,
Trump declared. Whether his administration has the mettle
and the patience to pull off a lasting agreement that will suffer
many false starts along the way, during a process facing the
implacable opposition of people far more devious than the
congressional Republicans who derailed the repeal of Obam-
acare, remains very much an open question.
For his part, as he stood alongside Trump, Abbas gave the
impression of playing ball more than he ever did when Presi-
dent Barack Obama was in charge. During Obamas second
term, Abbas refused direct talks with Israel following the col-
lapse of the 2013-2014 negotiations, pursuing a policy of sulky

The Wedding Plan
ERIC A. GOLDMAN

R
ama Burshtein simply got tired
of seeing film portraits of her
ultra-Orthodox Israeli commu-
nity in a negative light.
This is what the Israeli charedi film-
maker told me two weeks ago, when we
chatted, just down the block from the
theater where her film The Wedding
Plan had screened the night before at the
Tribeca Film Festival.
I came out of pain, she said. I saw a
film that spoke about my world, but it was
so untrue. I can tolerate voices that are not
mine, as long as there is another voice,
which I thought was really lacking. So I
felt that I studied all those years to actu-
ally practice that. I was 40 years old and
not looking for a career.
The American-born Burshtein had stud-
ied filmmaking at the prestigious Sam
Spiegel Jerusalem Film School before she
made her shift to a totally observant Jew-
ish life. Once she was part of the ultra-
Orthodox world, she married, had four
children, taught filmmaking to young cha-
