In the chart above the GDP per

Nicaragua did not have a strong

they had a strong economy. With a
128 GDP, Nicaragua did not stand a
chance against the economy the
U.S. had. The Infant Mortality Rate
reflects on a countrys health care,
Nicaragua had a high mortality rate
which means their health care was
not sufficient enough to keep some
babies alive and well. The
population in Nicaragua was the
lowest out of all the countries, this
reflects that there was a lot of death
and bad health care if many people
could not stay alive. The Population
Growth Rate was higher than two
indicating that it was high but that
population rate did not raise the
population. The statistics show that
Nicaragua was a third world country
that did not have the best statistics.

questions is a reporter from the
Nicaraguan News. This is interview
informs the surprise Reagan had

Now the question is, were
U.S. actions and values
contained in Nicaragua?
During the Cold War, the
United States sought to
defend freedom by
opposing communism and
creating free markets. The
United States sometimes
succeeded in containing
communism and providing
aid in Nicaragua, yet some
United States actions
undermined the nations
values of democracy and
clandestine services.
The U.S. did not
spread their values of
democracy throughout their
time in Nicaragua because
they did not go about their
values of democracy. In the
historiography, Americas
Century of Regime Change
from Hawaii to Iraq(2006),
by Stephen Kinzer, the
authors claim is that
spreading democracy for
the U.S. was not beneficial,
the U.S. only cared about
their own profit. In the short
article, the author states,
Americans overthrew
governments only when
economic interests
coincided with ideological
ones.(Kinzer) Kinzer states
that the U.S. only took
actions when it would
benefit them for economic
interest. The lack of
democracy is proven, the
U.S. wanted nothing but
profit from Nicaragua. The

overindulges the
National Guard

elites at the cost of
the preponderance

Somozas son then
promises the United
States that he will not
have his country
under a communist
role. In 1972 a
devastating
earthquake hits

of Nicaragua. A new
leader is in charge at
this time, his name is
Anastasio Somoza.
He then takes U.S.
help from President
Nixon, allies, and
friends. During this
time many groups
start to form to rebel
because they cant
tolerate what the poor
are going through.

Reagan, Is it true? Have you had

Contras?
President Reagan: No, it is not true.
Those were secret funds that went
behind my back. Not only am i
supposed to take full responsibility
but i will punish those for these
secret actions.
Nicaraguan Reporter: Are you
surprised that the secret actions
happened?
Reagan: Yes, i am very much
surprised as anyone could be right
now. These actions depict the
perspective people have on the
U.S. now.
Nicaraguan Reporter: Would you
like to say anything to Nicaraguan
citizens? How do you think you
would feel if Nicaragua was mining
your harbors and killed citizens?
Reagan: Well first off i would like to
send a sincere apology to all of the
families that have lost a loved one. I
mean that in every way possible, i
take full responsibility. I would feel
very devastated, i know i let down
the U.S. already and for that to
happen would just be very tragic.
That would be an act of war on the
behalf of Nicaragua.
Nicaraguan Reporter: On behalf of
Nicaragua, Im more than sure that
this event will be hard to overcome
U.S. was not spreading their
values of democracy which
shows that their actions
were inconsistent during the
Cold War. In the Document
493: Memorandum of
Conversation, the authors
James N. Briggs and Pedro
Joachim Chamorro, state
The students argued that
their participation in the
current political game
would only serve to add
credibility to an authoritarian
regime controlled by
oligarchs who will never
give up their present control
peacefully.(Briggs and
Chamorro) This
demonstrates how
democracy government is
not being established in this
region. This does not
represent a government of
the people, this shows
corruption and clearly the
U.S. did not establish a
democracy in Nicaragua.
The students also could
give the citizens of
Nicaragua the state of mind
of changing the government
to a communist regime. The
U.S. clearly is giving
Nicaragua a path to
communism. In both the
conversation and the article
both authors prove that the
U.S. was not promoting
democracy, they did not
follow their very own values,
they only did what was
beneficial for them.

July 19, 1979, the

the communist group,
the Sandinista
National Liberation
Front. Anastasio the
former leader of
Nicaragua then tries
to escape the country
but is murdered. Then
the Sandinista
leaders hold a
National Assembly
that is managed by
their militia. In 1982
traditionalists in
Nicaragua then start
to escape the country
because of the rule of
Sandinistas began to
take place. The
United States then
starts to give supplies

but we thank you for the apology. If
you dont mind me asking, do you
plan to send any aid to Nicaragua
for the tragedies?
Reagan: Yes, i will provide an
amount of aid. But one thing is for Director, from Senator Barry
sure, the U.S. will no longer fund
anyone after we give aid to those
tragic attacks.

was honor to meet you.
Reagan: Thank you for letting me

In the speech he says,As I
told the Tower board, i
didn't know about any
diversion of funds to the

responsibility.(Reagan) The
president of the United
States claims he didn't even
know about the secret
actions that were being
taken. Reagans statement
counteracts what Senator

the Contras. The acts
of civilians and social
service workers result
in the Boland
Amendment. This
amendment then
prohibits the United
States to help the
Contras. In 1984
Daniel Ortega was
finally elected since
his last election in the
1930s. Even though
he was not the leader
through the years of
1956-1982, he still
played a huge role in
society. Opposition
groups are subdue
and the media outlets
progressively were
under the influence of
Daniel Ortega.
Sandinistas were
forced out of the
junta, which is a
meeting. The National
Assembly then took
initiative to ally with
the contras. The
same year Daniel
Ortega was elected,
the U.S. was caught
mining Nicaraguan
then began a case
against the
international court in
the United States. In
this case, the CIA was

Barry Goldwater wrote in his
letter to the CIA director.
Throughout the Cold
War the U.S. was mainly
inconsistent with their
values and actions. Not only
was the Iran Contra
Affair somewhat
inconsistent but main
events during the affair
were inconsistent. In all,
these actions prove what
the U.S. was really
intending to do. There was
containment of communism
and the spread of capitalism
but there was no democracy
established. Now, the
question can be answered,
the U.S. somewhat kept
their promise for containing
communism but did not
promote the value of
democracy.

December of 1986

permission to fund the
contras. In August
1987, the countries
Colombia, Mxico,
Panama, and
Venezuela come to
an agreement to end
mercenary throughout

Honduras, Nicaragua,
Guatemala, and El
Salvador settle on
elections and
rebellious groups that
were formed come to
an agreement to
cease-fire. The first
world, second world,
and Cuba decide to
stop supporting
guerilla groups.
