Life-threatening ailments like heart disease, cancer, stroke and type 2 diabetes most afflict
adults, but are more than often consequences of childhood obesity

Children are generally considered obese when their B.M.I. is at or above the 95th percentile for
others of the same age and sex.

Obese adolescents have higher rates of depression, which in itself may foster poor eating and
exercise patterns

Childhood Obesity

Opener:

Thesis: Today I will talk about child obesity and how its caused, how children are affected by
obesity and what different tactics in the Americas are doing to reduce the percentage of obese
children

1. First we will talk about how child obesity is caused.

-Lack of exercise

-Bad eating habits/Overeating

(Personal Experience)

I went to beall elementary were the students would have 30 minutes of recess and once a week
there would be a gym period of 45 mins. The recommended time of exercise is at least an hour a
day. So the students would be only at half of the recommended time.

2. Next I will talk about how children are affected by obesity.

-Children are more prone to health problems in the future

A quote from Jane Brody`s article The Urgency in Fighting Childhood Obesity Life-
threatening ailments like heart disease, cancer, stroke and type 2 diabetes mostly affect adults,
but are more than often consequences of childhood obesity

Other than physical health problems, child obesity can cause depression.

From the same article by Jane brody, she states Obese adolescents have higher rates of
depression, which in itself may foster poor eating and exercise patterns.

3. Lastly we will talk about what we as a country are doing to help reduce the percentage of
obese children.

Schools are encouraging parents to take the time to teach their children about junk foods.

In Washington dc there have been projects to build playgrounds to promote exercise.
