JRC Deep-Star Perforating System
June 4, 2001 ii
Preface
Introduction
Safety Warning
The Jet Research Center (JRC) Deep-Star Perforating System contains explosive
compounds which are designed to explode when they receive, intentionally or
unintentionally, stimuli capable of bringing the explosive compounds to detonation. As a
result the system is capable of causing extensive bodily injury or death.
CAUTION Do not attempt to use this product unless you have received training in the handling and
use of oilfield explosive products.
Refer to and apply the procedures listed in the Recommended Practices for Oilfield
Explosives Safety, API Recommended Practice 67 (RP67), and your company's operations
and safety procedures before assembling or using this product.
Note The following assembly procedures for the Deep-Star Perforating System must be
explicitly followed, without attempts to shortcut, alter, switch, or otherwise deviate in any
way, or use alternate parts from those supplied by Jet Research Center for such assembly.
CAUTION Failure to follow the assembly instructions can result in extensive bodily injury and death.
The assembly of the Deep-Star Perforating System can be done either in a loading facility
or designated loading area at the job site, but arming of the system must only take place at
the job site where they are to be used and immediately prior to running the system. If there
is any delay, the system should be disarmed and safely stored.
Before beginning operations, a stray voltage and current survey must be performed
between the perforating unit to ground, the rig to ground, the wellhead to ground, and any
other structures to ground in the immediate work area. The voltages and currents
measured must be below the acceptable limits. Providing the measurements are below the
acceptable limits, grounding lines must be connected between the perforating unit, rig,
wellhead, and any other structure and ground.
The term "SAFE" when used in this document refers to a combination of actions that are
designed to render the initiating system incapable of sending power to the electric
detonator. These actions typically involve:
shorting of the mono-conductor wireline conductor to ground via a power resistor. For
the multi-conductor, the conductors are connected to one another and ground via
power resistors.
a key system which prevents the initiating system from connecting power to the elec-
tric wireline.
disconnecting power to the initiating system.
The key is held outside the unit and visible until the explosive assembly is safely 200 ft
(70 m) below ground level or the sea bed, or the gun assembly and detonator have been
removed and returned to storage.
The term "Radio Silence" is used to refer to the combination of actions which involves:
the shutting down of radio frequency transmissions within 1,000 feet (305 m).
the shutting down and isolating of electric welding equipment and active cathodic
protection.
CAUTION Do not handle explosives when electric storms (thunder and/or lightening) are in the
immediate area. Do not handle explosives in a sandstorm, dust storm, or similar situation
that can result in the build up of static electric charges.
The Deep-Star system includes an unprecedented variety of shot phasings, allowing the
gun phasing to be tailored for maximum performance to the geometry of a well
completion. The wide variety of shot phasings available in Deep-Star are all achieved by
installing charges to a flat strip. For each phasing, the same charge carrier strip is used for
both the 2 1/8-in. and the 1 11/16-in. gun assemblies, but not all phasings are available in
the 1 11/16-in. system.
The Deep-Star system is designed for deep, high temperature, high pressure wells.
Corrosion resistant steel alloy charge cases permit the use of the Deep-Star system in
hostile environments. (See notes for use in hostile environments.)

JRC Deep-Star Perforating System Introduction
The Deep-Star system is primarily designed for running thru-tubing and perforating casing
below the tubing. When perforating casing below tubing, a minimum of 10 ft (3.28 m)
should be allowed between the bottom of the tubing and the top charge.
In addition to perforating for production, Deep-Star guns are also ideal for establishing
circulation through drill collars and heavy-walled tubing when damage to casing is not a
concern.
The 1 11/16-in. (42.9 mm) Deep-Star system has a 1.688-in. gauge diameter. The min-
imum seating nipple through which this gun will run is 1.718 in. (43.6 mm) ID.
The 2 1/8-in. Deep-Star system has a 2.125-in. gauge diameter. The minimum ID
restriction through which this gun will run is 2.18 in. (55.4 mm) ID.
Note A tubing gauge run is recommended prior to running the Deep-Star system. Gauge
rings to gauge the OD of assembled Deep-Star guns are included in the equipment list.
Deep-Star perforating guns, as with any strip capsule gun, can be shot in casing/tubing
with an ID only slightly larger than the gun system's OD. However, shooting in small
casing/tubing can result in potential damage to casing/tubing and/or the possibility of the
gun becoming stuck on its own charge debris and/or the debris bridging below the gun. To
reduce the potential damage and reduce the chance of sticking on charge debris, the shot
density can be reduced.
Note JRC recommends that these systems be top fired and fully decentralized for opti-
mum performance and minimum carrier strip deformation after firing.
The Deep-Star safety features incorporate a "pop-off" characteristic designed into the
charge. This charge design utilizes a pressure release mechanism functioning as an
internal pressure release in case of accidental fire. The charge retainer design permits fully
assembled charges to be shipped as Class C (1.4S) explosives.

For assemblies which require pop-riveted brackets, it is recommended that the Cherry
Model #GH-780 Pneumatic pop-rivet gun is used with a No. 4 nozzle. (The nozzle number
is stamped on one of the hex flats). If using another brand of pneumatic pop-rivet gun, the
nozzle will have to be modified to ensure correct seating of the rivets. Contact JRC
Engineering for modification instructions.
Note It is not recommended to use a hand held pop-rivet gun. Only use the stainless
steel pop-rivets supplied under the part number in the equipment list. Do not use any other
pop-rivets.
Inspection of parts
All parts, components, and assemblies are run through quality control and inspection
procedures during the manufacturing processes, but it is possible to have some parts which
are not to specification. During shipping and storage, it is possible for parts to become
damaged. While assembling the guns, be observant for any part or parts which are not the
same as the majority.
Note Do not use any parts that appear different from the majority, or do not appear to fit
correctly with adjoining parts.

Deep-Star 0 Phase
The Deep-Star 0 Phase is available as follows:
Note The tandem connections include a threaded charge hole which is also at 0.
Installation of Charges
1. Place the required number of carrier strips for the gun length to be loaded on a flat sur-
face with back facing upward. The strip should be straight and flat. If the strip does
not lie flat attempt to gently straighten the strip.
Note Do not use the charge if the cap or case appears lose, rotates freely, or shows any
other abnormality. The black retaining ring should be in place deep inside the groove
between the charge case and cap. Do not use the charge if the retaining ring is not in place
or is unevenly positioned.
3. The first charge on the top strip will be mounted in the second-from-top hole, and the
last charge on the bottom strip will be mounted in the second-from-bottom hole. This
procedure allows for mounting of the zero phase detonating cord protector at the top
and bottom of the assembly.
4. Load all charges onto the carrier by securely screwing each charge into position using
the appropriate charge-tightening wrench. The tip of the threaded end of the charge
cap should be flush or slightly recessed from the face of the strip. The shoulder on the
cap at the back of the thread should be flush with the back of the strip.
5. The charge case must be rotated to align the detonating cord slots parallel to the carrier
strip. Each charge which does not have its slot parallel must have the charge case
rotated clockwise, slowly and smoothly, using the appropriate charge orienting socket
assembly until the slots are in a straight line along the entire gun length.
6. Use only the charge-tightening wrench to tighten the charges and only the charge ori-
enting socket to align the detonating cord slots.
CAUTION The use of other pliers, pipe wrenches, channel lock pliers, or similar tools can damage
the charge and result in the loss of its pressure integrity, which can result in operational
problems.
7. Position carrier strips end to end, and proceed to secure them together with the tandem
using four bolts. (The tandem always has a charge installed unless it is in the middle of
a blank section of gun.)
a. Firmly tighten bolts, but do not over tighten. Refer to JRC Engineering for desired
torque value.
b. Turn the assembly over, and firmly screw jam nuts onto each bolt using a 9/16-in.
wrench or socket. (The jam nut is to prevent the bolt from backing out on the way
out of the hole after the gun is fired.)
8. Attach a bottom guide to the bottom end of carrier strip.
a. Insert two bolts through the bottom guide, attach to carrier strip, and tighten.
b. Attach a jam nut to each bolt and tighten.
9. If the detonator will be attached to the detonator spacer bar, attach a detonator spacer
bar to the top of the assembled gun with a detonating cord retainer (for a tandem con-
nection) installed on the exposed bolt threads before attaching the nuts.
Note If a plug-in style detonating system is to be used, do not attach the spacer bar to
the gun at this point because it will be attached to the firing head.
10. Install a rollover sleeve on each tandem charge and on the third-from-bottom charge.
If there is a blank section of carrier, install a rollover sleeve at the third-from-bottom
shot of each interval and the third-from-top shot of each interval.
11. Cut a length of detonating cord, leaving enough length of detonating cord to attach the
detonator at the top and an end seal at the bottom.
12. Push the detonating cord end seal over the bottom end of the detonating cord, and
secure with the seizing cord. Secure the detonating cord and end seal to the detonating
cord protector with seizing cord.
13. Lay the detonating cord over the charge slots from the bottom up.
Note Do not stretch or kink the detonating cord. Slide the detonating cord protectors
over the end of the detonating cord.
14. Install the bottom detonating cord protector assembly onto the bottom charge of the
gun assembly. Use the blank charge hole to bolt the protector in place.
15. Starting from the bottom end of the gun, place a charge clip over the detonating cord.
a. Slide one side of the clip under the tabs on the far side of the case.
b. Using the clip installation tool, press down and away from you on the clip, and
allow it to lock the detonating cord into place in the slot at the back of the case.
Note If clip has been previously removed or appears loose, remove and discard it and
use a new clip.
Note When the retainers are threaded into the holes in the strip, ensure they do not
extend beyond the front face of the strip because they will increase the running OD of the
assembly.
17. Install the top detonating cord protector assembly at the top charge of the carrier, using
a blank charge hole to bolt the protector in place.
18. Inspect the gun assembly for the correct positioning of all the parts. Use the appropri-
ate gauge, and run it over the complete length of the gun assembly to ensure the gun is
not oversized.
19. Measure the gun assembly from makeup points, and record the overall length and the
loaded intervals of the gun.
a. Record the part numbers, quantity, and date code of all the explosive components
used in the gun assembly, and label the gun with the same information if the gun is
not going to be ran immediately.
b. Record the part numbers and date codes with the job records for future reference.
20. The gun is now ready for arming. See arming procedure for the detonator being used.

Deep-Star Downside Biphase
The Deep-Star Downside Biphase is available as follows:
The Deep-Star Downside Phasing perforates two rows of holes, one row at each side of the
carrier strip. The angle between the rows of holes is 90 for the 2 1/8-in. OD system and
114 for the 1 11/16-in. system. When tandem connectors are used, a 0 perforation is
produced at the tandem.
Installation of Charges
1. Place the required number of carrier strips for the gun length to be loaded on a flat
loading table with the back facing upward. The strip should be straight and flat. If the
strip does not lie flat, attempt to gently straighten the strip.
Note Do not use the charge if the cap or case appears lose, rotates freely, or shows any
other abnormality. The black retaining ring should be in place deep inside the groove
between the charge case and cap. Do not use the charge if the retaining ring is not in place
or is unevenly positioned.
3. Determine the number of charges required to load carrier strip. For each tandem con-
nector a charge will be threaded into the tandem shooting at 0. All the remaining
charges will be loaded into brackets.
4. Place a charge mounting bracket, with legs up, onto the mounting bracket installation
fixture with the cutouts of the fixture down.
a. Place a charge into the bracket with the cap down and with the detonating cord
slot parallel to a line connecting the bracket mounting holes.
b. Press the charge into the bracket using an arbor press.
c. Repeat for the remaining charges.
5. The top shot of each interval must shoot to the right, and the bottom shot of each inter-
val must shoot to the left.
Note The first charge position is not loaded at the top and bottom to allow space for the
detonating cord protector. Leave the first two pop-rivet holes blank. The first charge will
be attached to the carrier strip at the third and fourth holes.
Note The rivet must be flush or below flush on the face of the carrier strip. There must
be no gap between the bracket foot and the back of the carrier strip. If the rivet is not flush
and/or there is a gap between the bracket foot and the back of the carrier strip, the bracket
must be replaced to prevent the assembly being over sized and weak. Install a second rivet
to connect the second foot of the bracket.
7. Install the next charge in the same manner, but with the charge shooting to the left of
the carrier strip. Continue down the carrier strip installing the charges to shoot alter-
nately to the right and left of the strip.
8. The last shot in any interval must be installed to shoot to the left of the carrier strip and
have below it at least two blank rivet holes in the carrier strip to install the detonating
cord protector.
9. If shooting across a tandem, the carrier strip will be loaded all the way to the tandem
connection with the last shot before the tandem shooting to the right and start again
immediately after the tandem with a shot to the left.
10. Thread charges into the tandem connections, and align the detonating cord slot.
CAUTION Use only the charge-tightening wrench to tighten the charges and only the charge orienting
socket to align the detonating cord slots. The use of other pliers, pipe wrenches, channel
lock pliers, or similar tools can damage the charge and result in the loss of its pressure
integrity, which can result in operational problems.
11. Position the carrier strips end to end and proceed to secure them together with the tan-
dem using four bolts. (The tandem always has a charge installed unless it is in the mid-
dle of a blank section of gun.)
a. Firmly tighten bolts to, but do not over tighten. Refer to JRC Engineering for
desired torque value.
b. Turn the assembly over and firmly screw jam nuts onto each bolt using a 9/16-in.
wrench or socket. The jam nut is to prevent the bolt from backing out on the way
out of the hole after the gun is fired.
12. Attach a bottom guide to the end of the carrier strip.
a. Insert two bolts through the bottom guide, attach to carrier strip, and tighten.
b. Attach a jam nut to each bolt.
13. If the detonator will be attached to the detonator spacer bar, attach a detonator spacer
bar to the top of the assembled gun with a detonating cord retainer (for a tandem con-
nection) installed on the exposed bolt threads before attaching the nuts.
Note If a plug-in style detonating system is to be used, do not attach the spacer bar to
the gun because it will be attached to the firing head.
18. Starting from the bottom of the gun, place a charge clip over the detonating cord and
slide one side of the clip under a tab on the far side of the case.
a. Using the clip installation tool, press down and away from you on the clip and
allow it to lock the detonating cord into place in the slot at the back of the charge
case.
CAUTION If a clip has been previously removed or appears loose, remove and discard it, and use a
new clip. Do not pull or stretch the detonating cord. The cord should curve between
charges, which allows for some detonating cord shrinkage when subjected to temperature
and pressure. Too much curvature can result in damage to the detonating cord when run-
ning in the well.
Note Use a detonating cord retainer at least once per foot of blank section.
20. Install the top detonating cord protector assembly at the top charge of the carrier, using
a stainless steel pop-rivet in the first pop-rivet hole to hold the protector in place.
21. Inspect the gun assembly for the correct positioning of all the parts.
Note Use the appropriate gauge and run it over the complete length of the gun assembly
to ensure the OD of the carrier assembly is not oversized.
23. The gun is now ready for arming. See arming procedure for the detonator being used.

Deep-Star Triphase Oscillating Spiral
The Deep-Star Triphase is available as follows:
Note Deep-Star Triphase must only be loaded at the above shot densities. Do not
attempt to load at lower shot densities.
The Deep-Star Triphase Perforating System produces three planes of perforations from
encapsulated perforating charges mounted onto a retrievable carrier strip. The perforations
are as follows:
0, +45, and -45 for the 2 1/8-in. (54mm) system
0, +57 and -57 for 1 11/16-in. (43mm) system, relative to the center of the carrier
assembly
The charges are attached to the carrier strip by threads and pop-riveted brackets. The
charges are configured in cycles of four charges, which repeat down the carrier strip. Each
cycle of four charges requires:
Two charges at 0, which require no bracket
Two charges at 45 for 2 1/8 in. (54mm), or 57 for 1 11/16 in. (43mm), which each
require a 45 charge mounting bracket
The top and bottom charge of each interval must be a 0 mounted charge so that a det-
onating cord protector can be attached to it.
2 45 to right
3 0
4 45 to left
The 0 charges screw into the carrier strip. (See the parts list for part numbers).
The +45 and -45 charges are mounted into 45 brackets (100008037 for 2 1/8 in.)
(100008040 for 1 11/16 in.)
Note Charges mounted into brackets are always inserted between the legs of the
bracket, never from the other side.
The alignment of the detonating cord slots is very important. The detonating must run in a
smooth curve between each charge.
The charge cases for the 0, +45, and -45 charges can be aligned after installing the
charges using the charge-orienting sockets (100009587 for 2 1/8 in.) (100014503 for 1
11/16 in.), but it can be easier to orient the charges while installing them into brackets.
The top and bottom charges must be aligned with the detonating cord slots parallel to
the axis of the carrier strip, so that they can accept the 0 detonating cord protector.
The detonating cord slot in the 0 charges must be aligned at about 30 to the axis of
the carrier strip.
The detonating cord slot in the +45 and -45 charges must be parallel to the axis of
the carrier strip.
There must be no sign of an "S" or "Z" in the detonating cord between any charges.
Installation of Charges
1. Place the required number of carrier strips for the gun length to be loaded on a flat
loading table with the backs facing upward.
2. The strip should be straight and flat. If the strip does not lie flat, attempt to gently
straighten the strip. Do not use the strip if it cannot be straightened.
Note Inspect each charge prior to assembly into the gun. If the cap or case appears lose,
rotates freely, or shows any other abnormality, do not use the charge.
The black retaining ring should be in place deep inside the groove between the charge
case and cap. Do not use the charge if the retaining ring is not in place, or if it is unevenly
positioned.
3. Determine the number of charges required to load the assembly. Approximately half
the charge will be threaded into the carrier strip and half mounted into 45 charge
mounting brackets.
4. The top shot must be a 0 shot with an empty threaded charge hole above it on the
strip, into which a detonating cord protector will be attached. Similarly for the bottom
shot, it must be a 0 shot with a threaded charge hole below it on the strip into which a
detonating cord protector will be attached. Any blank sections of carrier also need to
have a detonating cord protector attached to the 0 charge at the top and bottom of the
blank section.
5. When running tandem guns, all the charge positions are filled immediately above and
below the tandem, and each tandem connector will have a charge threaded into it.
6. The first group of charges will be threaded into the strip in the 0 phase position. The
second group will be installed into 45 charge mounting brackets prior to being
attached to the carrier strip.
7. The first charge on the top strip will be mounted in the second from top 0 position.
The last charge on the bottom strip will be mounted in the second from bottom 0
hole. This allows for mounting of the zero phase detonating cord protector at the top
and bottom of the assembly.
8. Screw the first group of charges into the carrier strip by securely screwing each charge
into position using the appropriate charge-tightening wrench.
Note When fully installed, the tip of the threaded end of the charge cap should be flush
or slightly recessed from the face of the strip, and there must be no gap between the back
of the strip and the shoulder of the charge.
9. The second group of charges must be installed into 45 charge mounting brackets.
a. Place a charge mounting bracket, with legs up, onto the mounting bracket installa-
tion fixture with the fixtures cut-outs down.
b. Place a charge into the bracket with the cap up and with the detonating cord slot in
the case parallel to a line connecting the bracket mounting holes.
c. Press the charge into the bracket using an arbor press.
d. Repeat for all the charges in this group.
Note The alignment of the detonating cord slots and the detonating cord is very impor-
tant. There must be no sign of 'S' or 'Z' curves between each charge.
10. The charge case of the top 0 charge, the bottom 0 charge, and the 0 charges in tan-
dems must be rotated to align the detonating cord slots parallel to the carrier strip. This
is done by slowly and smoothly rotating the charge case clockwise with the appropri-
ate charge orienting socket assembly until the slots are parallel to the strip. The cases
of the remaining 0 charges need to be rotated to an angle of about 30 to the strip so
that the detonating cord can run smoothly from the charges shooting alternately to the
right and left of the strip.
11. Use only the charge-tightening wrench to tighten the charges, and use only the charge
orienting socket to align the detonating cord slots.
Note The use of other pliers, pipe wrenches, channel lock pliers, or similar tools can
damage the charge and result in the loss of its pressure integrity which can result in opera-
tional problems.
12. Load a charge into each tandem by securely screwing the charge into position, using
the appropriate charge-tightening wrench. Align the detonating cord slot parallel to
the strip.
13. Install a rollover sleeve on each tandem charge and on the second from bottom 0
charge. If there is a blank section of gun, install rollover sleeves at the second top and
second bottom 0 charge of each loaded section.
14. Place a stainless steel pop-rivet into the pneumatic pop-rivet gun.
a. From the face of the strip, push the rivet through the first hole below the top 0
charge.
b. Ensure that the head of the rivet is flush or below flush with the face of the carrier
strip.
15. Take a charge from group two, and place the upper foot of the bracket over the end of
the rivet so that the charge is shooting to the right of the strip.
16. Align the hole in the other foot with the next hole in the carrier strip. Firmly push the
charge and bracket assembly to the back of the carrier strip, and firmly push the pop-
rivet to the face of the carrier strip. There must be no gaps.
Note Do not pull or stretch the detonating cord. The cord should curve between charges
which allows for some detonating cord shrinkage when subjected to temperature and pres-
sure. Too much curvature can result in damage to the detonating cord when running in the
well. Install the clips on the remaining charges.
25. Install the top detonating cord protector assembly on the first charge of the carrier,
using a blank charge hole to bolt the protector in place.
26. If a blank section or sections are in the gun, then install a detonating cord protector at
the top and bottom of each blank section. Retain the detonating cord to the strip along
the blank section with detonating cord retainers threaded into threaded charge holes or
tandem connection retainers pop-rivet to the strip. Use a detonating cord retainer at
least once per foot of blank section.

Deep-Star 90 Spiral Phase
The Deep-Star 90 Spiral Phase is available as follows:
Installation of Charges
1. Place the required number of carrier strips for the gun length to be loaded on a flat
loading table with back facing upward. The strip should be straight and flat. If the strip
does not lie flat, attempt to gently straighten the strip.
For each tandem con-
nector, a charge will be threaded into the tandem shooting at 0.The remaining charges
will be loaded into brackets. Divide them into two equal groups.
Note If the rivet is not flush and/or there is a gap between the bracket foot and the back
of the carrier strip, the bracket must be replaced to prevent the assembly being over sized
and weak. Install a second rivet to connect the other foot of the bracket.
8. Repeat for the second charge, but take it from group two, and install it shooting to the
back and right of the strip.
9. Repeat for the third charge, take it from group two, and install it shooting to the back
and left of the strip.
10. Repeat for the fourth charge, but take it from group one, and install it shooting to the
front and left of the strip.
11. The fifth charge is a repeat of the first charge, from group one shooting to the front
and left of the strip.
12. Continue down the carrier forming the spiral by repeating the four charge installation
sequence.
Note It is preferred to load carrier assemblies with multiples of one-foot (4) charges so
that the bottom shot is shooting to the front and left of the carrier strip and can have a det-
onating cord protector installed. In a single strip configuration, the last charge position
will not be loaded, but a detonating cord protector will be installed in the last position.
If shooting across a tandem, the carrier strip will be loaded all the way to the tandem con-
nection with the last shot before the tandem shooting to the front and right, and start again
immediately after the tandem with a shot to the front and left.
13. Into each tandem, install a charge (shooting at 0 phasing). Screw a charge into each
tandem using the appropriate charge-tightening wrench.
Note The tip of the threaded end of the charge cap should be flush or slightly recessed
from the face. The charge case must be rotated to align the detonating cord slots parallel to
the carrier strip. This is done by slowly and smoothly rotating the charge case clockwise
with the appropriate charge orienting socket assembly until the slots are in line with
the gun.
14. Position carrier strips end-to-end, and proceed to secure them together with the tan-
dem using four bolts. (The tandem will always have a charge installed unless it is in
the middle of a blank section of gun.)
a. Firmly tighten bolts, but do not over tighten. Refer to JRC Engineering for desired
torque value.
b. Turn the assembly over and firmly screw jam nuts onto each bolt using a 9/16-in.
wrench or socket. The jam nut is to prevent the bolt from backing out on the way
out of the hole after the gun is fired.
Note If a plug-in style detonating system is to be used, do not attach the spacer bar to
the gun because it will be attached to the firing head.
Note If a clip has been previously removed or appears loose, remove and discard it and
use a new clip.
CAUTION Do not pull or stretch the detonating cord. The cord should curve between charges which
allows for some detonating cord shrinkage when subjected to temperature and pressure.
Too much curvature can result in damage to the detonating cord when running in the well.
24. If a blank section or sections are in the gun, install a detonating cord protector at the
top and bottom of each blank section. Retain the detonating cord to the strip along the
blank section with detonating cord retainers for tandem connections and pop-rivet in
place.
Note Use a detonating cord retainer at least once per foot of blank section.
25. Inspect the gun assembly for the correct positioning of all the parts. Use the appropri-
ate gauge, and run it over the complete length of the gun assembly to ensure the OD of
the carrier assembly is not oversized.
27. The gun is now ready for arming. See arming procedure for the detonator being used.

Deep-Star Pentaphase Oscillating Spiral
The Deep-Star Pentaphase Oscillating Spiral is available as follows:
Note Do not attempt to load the Pentaphase at a lower shot density than 5.8 spf.
The Deep-Star Pentaphase Perforating System has charges loaded in an oscillating spiral
that takes eight charges to complete a cycle. Each cycle of eight charges requires:
2 charges at 0 which require no bracket
4 charges at 45 which each require a 45 bracket
2 charges at 90 which each require a 90 bracket
2 90 to right
3 45 to right
4 0
5 45 to left
6 90 to left
8 0
The 0 charges screw into the carrier strip (101207478 for 12-ft strip) (101207478 for
5-ft strip) (both strips for 2 1/8-in. and 1 11/16-in.).
The +45, -45 charges are mounted into 45 brackets (100008037 for 2 1/8-in.)
(100008040 for 1 11/16-in.).
The +90, -90 charges are mounted into 90 brackets (101204940 for 2 1/8-in.)
(101211642 for 1 11/16-in.).
Charges mounted into brackets are always inserted between the legs of the bracket,
never from the other side.
Note The alignment of the detonating cord slots is very important. The detonating must
run in a smooth curve between each charge.
The charge cases for the 0, +45, -45, +90, -90 charges can be aligned after install-
ing the charges using the charge orienting sockets (100009587 for 2 1/8-in.)
(100014503 for 1 11/16-in.), but it can be easier to orient the charges while installing
them into brackets.
The top and bottom charges must be aligned with the detonating cord slots parallel to
the axis of the carrier strip so they can accept the 45 detonating cord protector.
The detonating cord slot in the 0, +45, -45 charges must be aligned at about 20 to
the axis of the carrier strip.
The detonating cord slot in the 90 charges must be parallel to the axis of the carrier
strip.
There must be no sign of an "S" or "Z" in the detonating cord between any charges.
Installation of Charges
1. Place the required number of carrier strips for the perforating assembly length to be
loaded on a flat loading table with the backs facing upward. The carrier strip should be
straight and flat. If the carrier strip does not lie flat, attempt to gently straighten the
strip.
2. Use tandem subs to join carrier strips together. Firmly tighten each bolt and firmly
attach the jam nuts.
3. Start at the top of the first strip. The first 0 threaded charge hole is left blank.
4. Install a charge into a 45 bracket.
5. Position the bracket on the strip with the charge shooting to the right of the carrier
strip, when looking from the bottom of the concave side of the strip. Align the hole in
the top foot of the bracket with the first hole below the blank 0 threaded charge hole.
6. Secure the bracket to the strip at the top only, using a stainless steel pop-rivet
(100008061 for 2 1/8-in. and 1 11/16-in.). The pop-rivet is installed from the front of
the carrier strip and must be fully recessed after assembly.
a. Push the pop-rivet firmly against the face of the carrier strip.
b. Push the foot of the bracket firmly to the back of the carrier strip using a flat
screwdriver.
c. Activate the pneumatic pop-rivet gun.
7. Install a charge into a 90 phasing bracket.
Note The wide band on the bracket is to the same side as the perforating direction (the
threaded end or the charge).
8. Position the bracket on the strip with the charge shooting to the right, with the upper
foot of the 90 bracket over the lower foot of the 45 bracket. Align the holes and
secure the two brackets to the carrier strip with a pop-rivet.
Note Before activating the pneumatic rivet gun (100014500), ensure the two brackets
are flush with the strip and the rivet is fully recessed into the front face of the carrier strip.
Screw the 0 charges onto the carrier strip and tandem subs using the appropriate charge-
tightening wrench. The tip of the threaded end of the charge cap should be flush or slightly
recessed from the face of the strip. There must be no gap between the shoulder of the
charge and the back of the carrier strip.
10. When all the charges are attached to the carrier strip, and before attaching detonating
cord:
a. Attach rollover sleeves where necessary, and run the gun OD gauge (100158429
for 2 1/8-in.) (100158430 for 1 11/16-in.) over the complete length of the gun.
b. Correct any high spots.
11. Cut the detonating cord to length, allowing for the extra length required for the phas-
ing. Boot the end and tie to the inside of the detonating cord protector.
Note The alignment of the detonating cord slots is very important. The detonating must
run in a smooth curve between each charge.
12. When the gun assembly is complete, run the gun OD gauge (100158429 for 2 1/8-in.)
(100158430 for 1 11/16-in.) over the complete length of the gun assembly and subs.
CAUTION Handle the loaded carrier strips and system assemblies with care to avoid damaging the
detonating cord and bending the carrier strip. The carrier strip can be flexed with the
charges on the concave side of the strip.
Note Flexing the carrier strip with the charges on the convex side of the strip can result
in deformation of the carrier strip that is difficult or impossible to correct on a loaded
assembly.

the charges can be oriented while installing them into brackets.
The +135, -135 charges must be aligned while installing them into brackets, and can
not be realigned after the brackets are attached to the strip, but the charge cases can be
rotated to align with the brackets before the brackets are attached to the strip.
The top and bottom shots must be aligned with the detonating cord slot parallel to the
axis of the strip so that they can accept the 45 detonating cord protector.
The other +45, -45 and the +90, -90 shots must have the detonating cord slot at
about 20 to the axis of the strip.
The detonating cord slot in the +135, -135 charges must be parallel to the axis of the
carrier strip. All the charges between the 135 charges have the slot at about 20 to the
axis of the strip.
There must be no sign of an "S" or "Z" in the detonating cord between any charges.
Installation of Charges
1. Start at the top of the first strip. The first 0 shot is left blank.
2. Install a charge into a 45 bracket.
3. Position the bracket on the strip with the charge shooting to the right of the strip, when
looking from the bottom of the concave side of the strip. Secure the bracket to the car-
rier strip at the top only, using a pop-rivet (100008061) and pneumatic pop-rivet gun
(100014500).
4. Install a charge into a 90 bracket.
Note The wide band on the bracket is to the same side as the perforating direction (the
threaded end of the charge).
5. Position the 90 bracket on the strip with the charge shooting to the right and the upper
foot of the bracket over the lower foot of the 45 bracket. Align the holes, and secure
the two brackets with a pop-rivet.
Note Ensure the two brackets are flush with each other and with the carrier strip, and
the pop-rivet is fully recessed before activating the pneumatic pop-rivet gun.
Note When all the charges are attached to the carrier strip and before attaching detonat-
ing cord, attach the rollover sleeves, and then run the gun OD gauge (100158429 for 2 1/8-
in.) over the complete length of the gun. Correct any high spots.
Note If using less than a full strip, the last charge should be a 45 shot to the left and a
45 detonating cord protector (100157591 for 2 1/8-in.) installed over the charge when
installing the detonating cord.
7. When the gun assembly is complete, run the gun OD gauge (100158429 for 2 1/8-in.)

Do not attempt to load the Octaphase at a lower shot density than 5.8 spf.
The Octaphase Spiral charges are loaded in a spiral that takes eight shots to complete a
cycle. Each cycle of eight charges requires:
2 90 to right
3 135 to right
4 180
5 225 (135 to left) Possible top shot position below blank section
8 0 (360)
The 0 shots screw into the carrier strip (101215826 for 12-ft strip) (101215803 for
6-ft strip) (101215779 for 4-ft strip).
The 45, 135, 225, 315 shots are mounted into 45 brackets (100008037 for
2 1/8-in.).
The 90, 270 shots are mounted into 90 brackets (101204940 for 2 1/8-in.).
The 180 shots are mounted into 180 brackets (101208866).
Charges mounted into brackets are always inserted between the legs of the bracket,
never from the other side.
Note The alignment of the detonating cord slots is very important. The detonating cord
must run in a smooth curve between each charge.
The charge cases for the 0, 45, 90, 270, 315 can be aligned after installing the
charges using the charge orienting socket (100009587 for 2 1/8-in.), but the charges
can be aligned while installing them into brackets.
The 135, 180, 225 charges must be aligned while installing them into brackets, and
cannot be realigned after the brackets are attached to the strip, but the charge cases can
be rotated to align with the brackets before the brackets are attached to the strip.
The top and bottom shots must be aligned with the detonating cord slot parallel to the
axis of the strip so that they can accept the 45 detonating cord protector.
The 45, 90, 270, 315 shots must have the detonating cord slot at about 20 to the
axis of the strip.
The 135 and 225 shots must have the detonating cord slot parallel to the axis of the
strip.
The 180 shots must have the detonating cord slots at about 30 to the axis of the strip.
There must be no sign of an "S" or "Z" in the detonating cord between any charges.
Installation of Charges
1. Start at the top of the first strip. The first 0 shot position is left blank.
2. Install a charge into a 45 bracket with the charge shooting in the + or - 45 position.
3. Position the 45 bracket on the strip with the charge shooting to the right of the strip
when looking from the bottom of the concave side of the strip. Align the hole in the
top foot of the bracket with the first hole below the blank 0 shot.
4. Secure the bracket to the strip at the top only, using a stainless steel pop-rivet
(100008061). The pop-rivet is installed from the front of the carrier strip and must be
fully recessed after assembly.
5. Install a charge into a 90 bracket.
Note The wide band on the bracket is to the same side as the perforating direction (the
threaded end of the charge).
6. Position the bracket on the strip with the charge shooting to the right and the upper
foot of the bracket over the lower foot of the 45 bracket. Align the holes and secure
the two brackets with a pop-rivet. Ensure the two brackets are flush with the strip and
the pop-rivet is fully recessed before activating the pneumatic pop-rivet gun
(100014500).
7. Install a charge into a 45 bracket with the charge shooting in the + or - 135 position.
8. Position the 45 bracket on the strip with the 135 charge shooting to the right of the
strip and the upper foot of the 45 bracket over the lower foot of the 90 bracket. Align
the holes and secure the two brackets with a pop-rivet. Make sure that the two brackets
are flush with the strip and the pop-rivet is fully recessed before activating the pneu-
matic pop-rivet gun (100014500).
9. Install a domed charge into a 180 bracket with the charge shooting in the 180 posi-
tion.
10. The detonating cord needs to be in place below the 180 charge before it is attached to
the strip. There are two ways to approach this:
Method A
a. Attach a detonator spacer bar to the top of the carrier strip.
b. Cut a length of detonating cord long enough for the complete gun assembly allow-
ing for the added length required for the spiral.
c. Slide the 45 detonating cord protector on to the end of the detonating cord.
d. Attach the detonating cord to the detonator spacer bar and attach the 45 detonat-
ing cord protector to the top shot, with the pop rivet the other end of the protector
to the strip.
e. Attach the detonating cord to the loaded charges using detonating cord clips.
f. Lay the cord on the strip where the 180 charge will be attached.
g. Check the orientation of the detonating cord slot.
h. Position the 180 domed charge and bracket on the strip, making sure that the det-
onating cord is in the detonating cord slot.
Note Do not install a detonating cord clip to the 180 domed charge. The detonating
cord is held between the charge and the carrier strip.
i. Position the upper foot of the 180 bracket over the lower foot of the 135 bracket.
j. Align the holes and secure the two brackets with a pop-rivet. Make sure that the
two brackets are flush with the strip and the pop-rivet is fully recessed before acti-
vating the pneumatic pop-rivet gun (100014500).
k. Continue down the gun to complete the sequence, attaching rollover sleeves
where necessary.
l. Gauge the gun OD using the gun OD gauge (100158429 for 2 1/8-in.).
Method B
a. Locate and clearly mark on the back of the carrier strip where the 180 domed
charges will be loaded.
Note Do not attach the 180 domed charges and brackets at this time, nor the lower foot
of the 135 bracket.
b. After leaving the 180 position blank, continue loading with the remaining
charges. Attach the lower foot of the 225 charge and bracket and the upper foot
of the 270 charge and bracket at the same time.
Note For the 225 charge and bracket, do not attach the upper foot of the bracket.
c. Continue down the gun, following the charge sequence but not loading the 180
domed charges.
d. When all the other charge have been loaded, attach rollover sleeves where
necessary.
e. Gauge the OD of the gun assembly with the gun OD gauge (100158429 for
2 1/8-in.). Correct any high spots.
f. Attach a detonator spacer bar to the top of the carrier strip.
g. Cut a length of detonating cord long enough for the complete gun assembly allow-
ing for the added length required for the spiral.
h. Slide the 45 detonating cord protector on to the end of the detonating cord.
i. Attach the detonating cord to the detonator spacer bar, and attach the 45 detonat-
ing cord protector to the top shot.
j. Attach the detonating cord to the loaded charges using detonating cord clips.
k. Lay the cord on the strip where the 180 charge will be attached.
l. Check the orientation of the detonating cord slot.
m. Position the 180 domed charge and bracket on the strip, making sure that the det-
onating cord is in the detonating cord slot.
Note Do not install a detonating cord clip to the 180 domed charge. The detonating
cord is held between the charge and the carrier strip.
n. Slide the lower foot of the 180 domed charge and bracket under the upper foot of
the 225 charge and bracket.
o. Position the upper foot of the 180 bracket over the lower foot of the 135 bracket.
p. Align the holes, check that the detonating cord is in the correct position, and
secure the two brackets to the carrier strip with a pop-rivet.
Note Make sure that the two brackets are flush with the strip and the pop-rivet is fully
recessed before activating the pneumatic pop-rivet gun (100014500).
q. Align the holes in the lower foot of the 180 domed charge and bracket and the
upper foot of the 225 charge and bracket, and secure the two brackets to the car-
rier strip with a pop-rivet. Continue down the gun to complete the following
sequence:
i. Top of Octaphase Spiral gun
Detonator spacer bar (100014440 for 2 1/8-in. and 1 11/16-in.)
0 leave blank to install 45 detonating cord protector (100157591 for
2 1/8-in.)
45 to right (45)
90 to right (90)
135 to right (135)
180 straight up (180)
Note If using less than a full strip, the last charge should be a 45 shot to the left, and a
45 detonating cord protector (100157591 for 2 1/8-in.) should be installed over the
charge and 0 location when installing the detonating cord.
11. Boot the end of the detonating cord, and tie to the inside of the detonating cord
protector.
12. When the gun assembly is complete, run the gun OD gauge (100158429 for 2 1/8-in.)
over the complete length of the gun and subs.

Downloading of Carrier Assemblies
When loaded carriers are returned to surface after being downhole, JRC normally recom-
mends the replacement of all the explosive components (charges, detonating cord, and det-
onator, and charge clips).
1. Ensure that the gun has been disarmed as described in the disarming procedure.
2. Remove the charge clips from the back of each charge using the clip downloading
tool.
a. Open the jaws of the clip downloading tool wide enough to install vertically over
the clip.
b. Squeeze the handles together to close the tool on the clip. Pull towards and rotate
towards you to release the clip, and lift it out.
Note Charge clips are a single use item. Do not attempt to reuse previously removed
charge clips.
3. Remove the detonating cord protectors and remove the detonating cord. Pack the det-
onating cord for transport to the disposal facility.
4. Remove the nuts and bolts from the tandem connections to separate the perforating
assembly into individual carrier strips.
5. Unscrew the 0 charger from the carrier strips and tandem connections using the
appropriate charge-tightening wrench.
6. Return the charges to their original packaging, matching part numbers, and date codes,
and store according to local regulations.
Use the following procedures in the event of having to download carrier assemblies which
are either unused or which have been ran into a well but not detonated.
CAUTION When loaded carriers are returned to surface after being downhole, JRC normally recom-
mends the replacement of all the explosive components (charges, detonating cord, and det-
onator; and the detonating cord retaining clips).
1. Ensure that the detonating system has been made safe and removed from the Deep-
Star perforating assembly.
2. Remove the detonating cord clips from the back of each charge using the clip down-
loading tool.
a. Open the jaws of the clip downloading tool wide enough to install vertically over
the clip.
b. Squeeze the handles together to close onto the clip. Pull towards and rotate
towards you to release the clip, and lift it out.
Note Detonating cord clips are a single use item. Do not attempt to reuse a previously
removed detonating cord clips.
3. Remove the detonating cord from the detonating cord protectors. Use a detonating
cord cutter to cut the detonating cord as necessary. Pack the detonating cord as regula-
tions require.
4. Remove the nuts and bolts from the tandem connections to separate the perforating
assembly into individual carrier strips.
5. Unscrew the 0 charges from the carrier strip and tandem connections using the appro-
priate charge-tightening wrench. Pack the charges into their original packaging.
6. Remove the charges mounted into brackets from the carrier strip by cutting the charge
mounting brackets in the middle of each leg using a pair of tin snips (Wiss Snips
Metalmaster).
CAUTION Take care when working with the sharp, cut edges or the bracket and their remains on the
strip.
7. Place the charge and bracket, with legs down, onto the installation fixture (with cut-
outs up). Use an arbor press to press the charge out of the bracket.
CAUTION Take care when working with the sharp, cut edges or the bracket and their remains on the
strip.
8. Return the charges to their original packaging matching part numbers and date codes
and store according to regulations.
9. The carrier strip can be considered for reuse after the pop rivets are drilled out from
the strip. To remove the rivets:
a. Working from the face of the carrier strip, drill off the head of the rivets using a
#29 .136-in. (3.5 mm) diameter drill bit, being careful not to drill into the carrier
strip.
Punch out the remains of the rivets.
