The current Hybrid class that I am teaching is called Academic Research,

the aim of this unit is to teach students how to write academically using
paraphrasing, summarising and essay skills, learning how to reference and
research academic resources. I teach within the Foundation Program at
Monash South Africa, this is a program or bridging course for students that
did not qualify for first year. These students need to build their academic
skills so as to progress into their first year of undergrad.

Instructional Goals

On conclusion of this unit, students should be able to:

1. structure arguments and research strategies in assignments, using

critical thinking skills.

2. apply academic conventions in reading and writing specified texts/

articles.

Learning Objectives

1. Students evaluate three articles that they have researched and

describe the similarities and differences between the three articles
in 800 words.

Based on Blooms Taxonomy, this learning objective includes a high level

thinking skill because students need to evaluate their own research by
determining for themselves which articles will apply to a topic that is
discussed in class. It also includes a lower order thinking skill because
students need to apply what they have learnt in class about analysing
research and describe the similarities and differences between the three
articles.

In relation to the needs assessment, based on the types of students that I

have it is important for the students to be guided in their learning because
they have come from an environment where they were spoon fed
information and told exactly what to do and when to do it. However it is
also important to encourage them to become independent learners by
helping them use their critical thinking skills. Therefore, the objective both
guides and challenges the students.

2. Students are to demonstrate their reading and writing skills by

individually researching three articles and writing an essay of 1000
words based on the research.

Based on Blooms Taxonomy, this learning objective includes a lower order of

thinking skills because students need to apply the knowledge that they have learnt
in class about essay writing and research by demonstrating the skills learnt in a
1000 word essay.
The students in my class need to practice writing and research because their skills
are not at a high enough level to enter into first year. I sometimes prefer to focus on
Lower order thinking skills because there students need to develop their academic
skills first before they can move on to higher order thinking.
