Charlesworth, Annemarie, and Stanton Glantz. "Smoking in the Movies Increases Adolescent
Smoking:
A Review." Pediatrics, 116.6 (2005): 1516-1528. This source shows a certain study made
on nonsmoking 9th graders to show that portrayal of smoking can influence an individual
to initiate smoking. The 9th graders were split in two different groups. One group viewed
scenes of a young adult oriented movie containing smoking content and the other group
viewed the same movie scenes that were carefully edited removing the smoking scenes.
92 percent of the teens recalled seeing the smoking. This concluded that adolescents
ability to recall underage products has the best recall rates and highest recall rates for
underage products. I will be using the study to show how smoking scenes provokes
significantly more positive arousal and positively beliefs about how a smoker perceives
their own stature. It suggests that smoking in movies gives off feelings of excitement and
found this source using the CSUN library database and found it to be credible because it
is scholarly journal.

Grube, Joel W. "Alcohol in the Media: Drinking Portrayals, Alcohol Advertising, and Alcohol
Consumption Among Youth." NCBI. National Research Council (US) and Institute of
Drinking; Bonnie RJ, O'Connell ME. National Academies Press (US), 2004. Web. 12 Apr.
2017. I will be using these two quotes from this article to show that most movies made
contain scenes with references supporting alcohol use and more than half of the movies
show no negative consequence, only desirable good outcomes. It depicts that alcohol can
be consumed whenever without consequences when in reality it can be harmful but most
movies don't show that. I found this source on google using the search words drug
portrayals in movies influences young adults and decided to take a look because NIH is a
credible source.
"Movies Influence Teen Alcohol Consumption More than Parents, Study Finds." Fox News
Health. Newscore, 21 February 2012. Web. 16 April 2017. This article shows a
longitudinal study that will be useful for showing evidence of my claim when including
the counterargument. The study accounts the cofounding variables that my audience might
think of when asking that there may be other reasons why people may start substance use.
The study was made through a phone call survey with 10 to 14 year olds who were then
surveyed again two years later. They were asked what movies they watched and if they had
merchandise with liquor brands on it. They also asked about their personality, school and
home life. Those are the extraneous variable they took into account. Researchers would
determine the amount of exposure of alcohol in the movies they watched. After taking the
cofounding variables into account, researchers concluded that those that watched the most

movies involving alcohol were twice more likely to initiate drinking. I found this source to
Stern, Susannah and Lindsey Morr. "Portrayals of Teen Smoking, Drinking, and Drug Use in
Recent Popular Movies." Journal of Health Communication, vol. 18, no. 2, Feb. 2013, pp.
179-191. EBSCOhost. Web. 12 Apr. 2017. A part of the article explains how several
studies show that movies play a big part in influencing young adults to use drugs. Teenagers
behaviors and attitudes toward substance abuse are influenced by environmental factors.
The more a young adult was exposed to smoking in movies, the more likely they would
initiate smoking and as they get older the more desire they would have to experience new
drugs. "Scholars have shown that people learn best and most from those with whom they
identify, and that perceived similarity can be a core component of identifying with others."
I will be using this quote to show that a character that is the same age as the viewer can be
an influential person to them. When a character is shown using drugs, the viewers will
develop expectations on how drugs should be used and that there will be a good outcome
of it, disregarding the negative consequences it can lead to. I found this source on the CSUN
database and decided to choose this one because it is more recent that the other articles I
saw and it is a peer-reviewed journal. It also shows other several studies that were done to
prove my point.
