In this journal Ball-Rokeach and DeFleur state one of the reasons that there is such a
lack of clarity as to whether the media have effects is that researchers have proceeded from
the wrong theoretical conceptualizations to study the wrong questions. This demonstrates
to us how in society believes there isnt a problem but only because they cant see the
problem that is there and the dependency that society has towards it.
This book gives us an introduction to the different types of mass media, such as books,
newspapers, magazines, movie, etc. Not only do they show us the different types but also
how each of them have a role in society and how there is different types of positive effects
Malamuth, N. M., & Check, J. V. (1981). The effects of mass media exposure on acceptance of
violence against women: A field experiment. Journal of Research in Personality, 15(4), 436-
446.

violence against women, the topic became more public to society and they did it by showing

O'Keeffe, G. S., Clarke-Pearson, K., & Council on Communications and Media. (2011). The
impact of social media on children, adolescents, and families. Pediatrics, 127(4), 800-804.
This article shows us how even when there is positive sides to mass media/social media
there is also the negatives. It is important that parents become aware of the nature of
social media sites, given that not all of them are healthy environments for children and
adolescents. Social media has become one of the biggest places for teenagers to become
bullied, leading them to suicide, depression, anger issues, etc. This article explains to us how
parents need to start monitoring their children so they can be aware of this danger.
Perse, E. M., & Lambe, J. (2016). Media effects and society Routledge.
Media effects and society explains to us what kind of effects mass media have to
people, institutions, society, culture, etc. It also shows something called The House Effect
this effect is when regular healthy normal people believe they are sick because of something
they saw on social media, or a show, they go to doctors demanding medication or expensive
tests. Mass media not only affects simple things in our everyday lives it can go as big as our
Rivers explains to us in this book how he uses modern society and old society to show the
different relations between the mass media that is being used in those times. Rivers also
states the book examines the social, economic, and intellectual environments in which the
media operate. It is important for us to compare different types of mass media in different
times to observe if they have the same effect or if they gradually change through time.
