2015
SupplementarypracticetestsforMTRCrossrailstraindriverassessments

About this booklet

This booklet is designed to help you do your best when completing the supplementary
tests and exercises included in the MTR Crossrail assessment process for train drivers.

This document is designed to help you prepare for some online tests youve been asked
to complete as part of the MTR Crossrail train driver assessment process. We know
that by using these materials and working through the practice tests you will do better
at the online tests than if you dont.

Why are MTR Crossrail using these tests?

MTR Crossrail have identified some key characteristics, aptitudes and skills that are
important for their train drivers to display in order to be successful in the MTR Crossrail
train driver job. These skills are not assessed as part of the core train driver exercises
so MTR Crossrail have introduced some additional tests and exercises that assess these
skills. This means you will have to sit these additional exercises as part of the MTR
Crossrail train driver assessment.

Which additional exercises will I sit?

You will be asked to complete the following exercises:

a situational judgement exercise

a test of visual focus and multi-tasking

The exercises will be completed on a computer at your home. If your scores suggest
that the MTR Crossrail train driver job is not a good match for you then your application
will not be progressed. However if your performance matches what is required of a
train driver you will be asked to complete further exercises.

The Situational Judgement Test (SJT)

Introduction
The Situational Judgement Test (SJT) is an online questionnaire. It measures how
compatible your attitude and preferences are with the characteristics of MTR Crossrail
train drivers.

The SJT consists of 25 situations from a variety of work settings and each situation
has 4 possible ways of responding. Its your job to indicate how you would prefer to
respond to each situation. The test is timed so its important that you try to work as
quickly and accurately as possible.

Practice questions
This practice test consists of a series of fictitious situations from a variety of work
settings. These situations are presented on the following pages. Each situation is
followed by 4 possible ways of responding to this situation. You must read through the
situation and the 4 responses and then decide which response would be your 1st
choice, then your 2nd choice, then your 3rd choice, and finally your 4th choice. Each
response is labelled with a letter from A to D. (See example below). Once youve
decided on the correct order you think they should go in you should write your answers
in the Answers section underneath each situation by writing 1, 2, 3 or 4 under the
respective letters.

e.g. A B C D

3 4 1 2

Before you start the practice test we will run through an example situation, please turn
over for the example situation.

Example Situation

You work in the events team for a large hotel chain. Youve been asked to arrange the
refreshments and buffet lunch for a conference taking place at your hotel. On the morning of the
conference you call the caterer to double check what time they will be delivering the buffet.
They tell you that they have your order booked in for tomorrow not today. Youre annoyed
theyve made a mistake. When you double check your order details you realise that it was you
who made the error and booked the buffet lunch for tomorrow. What do you do?
a. Youre very annoyed and cant help taking it out on the catering company at first. You
then explain your mistake and ask if they can help you by preparing your food today.
You say youre willing to come and collect the food if that helps.
b. You hate making a mistake and really dont like having to admit to it but you know you
need to do something. You tell them it was your error but say you would appreciate their
help, you could even pay extra if need be.
c. You dont understand how you made this mistake, youre usually so careful. You decide
to ask the chef in the hotel to prepare some food. This will be the quickest and easiest
option, it will also allow you to get on with other things.
d. You dont have much time to sort this out so ask the catering company to do what they
can to help you out. Youre a loyal customer and theyre always very helpful so
hopefully this will be ok.

How do I choose my response?

Read through the situation and all four response options before deciding on your
response order. If you decide that response b would be your top response put a 1
underneath the letter B in the answer space. If you decide response a would be your
second response put a 2 underneath the letter A in the answer space. If you decide
response c would be your third choice put a 3 underneath the letter C in the answer
space. Finally if you decide response d would be your fourth choice put a 4
underneath the letter D in the answer space. An example is outlined for you below.

e.g. A B C D

2 1 3 4

The order of the responses in this example is not to be taken necessarily as the correct
order. This is the order that the candidate in this example has judged as the correct
order. As you go through the practice test its your task to decide the order in which
the responses should be placed, based on what you think is best.

Now please follow the final instructions overleaf.

Situation 1

You work in the accounts department for a small double glazing firm. Your manager is going on
holiday next week and has asked you to take over some of her duties including meeting with the
managing director to tell him about the companys financial position this month. Your manager
asks if you would like to go through the details of the meeting with her before she goes on
holiday. Youve done this task a couple of times before. What do you do?
a. Youve done this before, your manager knows this, so youre unsure if this is really
necessary. Its nice of her to offer help so you say yes a run through would be good, but
youll have to do it later when youve got a bit more time.
b. Your manager always wants to double check your work. You suppose she is more
experienced than you though. You tell your manager youve done it before so its okay
but you do have a few questions youd like to ask her.
c. Your manager has been doing the job for a long time and really knows what she is doing.
You tell her that you will spend some time preparing and if you need to you will ask for
her input before she goes on holiday.
d. Its nice of your manager to offer the help, not everyone would do this but youre not
really worried about it as youve done it before. Also you know she is very busy before
going on holiday so you dont want to give her extra jobs to do.

Situation 2

Youre part of an amateur dramatics society, youre currently not performing anything but still
go to meetings on a Tuesday evening. You enjoy these meetings and like to make sure you
attend every week so youre in with a chance of taking part in the next performance. You work
in a call centre, a job that you are not really fond of. The shift patterns are changing at work,
this will require you to work late one night every two weeks. Its been proposed that this is a
Tuesday night for you, which will mean you miss your amateur dramatics meeting. What do you
do?
a. Youre annoyed that that the company has proposed a Tuesday night for you. You get
on with your manager well so you decide to speak to her to see if you can change this
to a different night. This is not possible so you suppose youll have to do a Tuesday
night.
b. Talk to your manager about this to see if there is a compromise. You dont want to say
you cant do it at all so you propose doing it once per month with the addition of staying
late on another evening each week.
c. Everyone has been allocated an evening so ask around the office to see if there is
anyone willing to swap with you. Start by asking people who know about your amateur
dramatics commitment as theyre more likely to agree.
d. Ask to meet with your manager to discuss the options around this. You dont want to be
seen as difficult so maybe there is a work around. Explain to your manager why you
dont want to do Tuesday evenings and hopefully your manager will understand.

Situation 3

Youre a manager of a pub and restaurant, each week you have to submit your financial figures
to head office. Youve just completed this weeks figures and emailed these to head office.
However youve just double checked your figures and you notice a mistake. Youve had a very
busy week with several staff members off sick or on annual leave. You rushed the figures to
meet the deadline so youre not surprised youve made a mistake. How do you feel about this?
a. This was bound to happen, the week has been very busy. You were rushing so youre
not surprised you made a mistake. You try to forget about it but spend the rest of the
day worrying.
b. Its concerning that youve made an error, you really dont like to make a mistake.
Youre worried about this but due to the staff shortages and being so busy you dont
have time to dwell on it today.
c. You really dont like making a mistake. Its been busy but its still annoying that you
didnt pick this up sooner. Youre only human though, mistakes happen so youre not
too worried about it.
d. Its been so busy this week that youre not surprised this has happened. Its always
annoying to make a mistake but you dont have time to worry about it so you get on
with your day.

Situation 4

You work as a labourer for a building contractor. Both in and outside of work your colleagues
like to have a laugh and joke and often make light hearted fun of each other. The majority of
your colleagues are interested in things like sports, cars and socialising. In your spare time you
like to collect stamps, you know that if you share this information your colleagues will laugh at
you. Youve not worked at the organisation for long. What do you do?
a. This is the sort of thing your colleagues will make a joke out of at your expense. Its
something that you enjoy though so you will mention it when asked.
b. Your colleagues will think its hilarious that this is your hobby. You decide to mention
this to a few people who are less likely to laugh at you.
c. You dont have to share everything about yourself at work so you decide to keep this to
yourself. Why put yourself in the firing line when you dont have to?
d. No one likes people laughing at them so you decide not to say anything. You can easily
join in with the conversations about the things they like instead.

Situation 5

Youre a hotel receptionist and line manager of some of the other receptionists. You have
aspirations to progress at the hotel and would like to move up to the role of reception manager.
There is a job opening here to work alongside the current reception manager. You dont have a
great relationship with the current reception manager. Most of the time you simply dont talk to
each other unless its necessary. Youve applied for this role and youll be interviewed next
week. Youll be interviewed by the current reception manager and the hotel manager. What do
you do?
a. Its difficult that the reception manager will be interviewing you since you dont get
along. You decide to make an effort with her as this can only help your chances. You
will also try to keep this up after the interview.
b. You know you need to get the reception manager on side but this could be difficult. You
start to interact with her more in a polite manner. Hopefully this can continue after the
interview too. You know its going to be difficult though.
c. You dont want to be seen as only making an effort for the interview. The reception
manager is fully aware of your relationship. Its important to make an effort for the
interview though so you will be as polite as possible on the day.
d. You really want to progress at work and would love this job. Its important to get on the
right side of the reception manager to have a chance to do this. It could be difficult but
you will try your hardest to be polite from now until the interview is done.

Situation 6

Youve taken your 2 and 4 year old children to the park with your niece and nephew who are a
similar age. Theyre all having fun, the younger ones are by your side while the older two are
playing on the slide while you watch. You didnt sleep well last night as your youngest was up
several times throughout the night. You feel very tired and could do with a sit down. The
children all love playing together and dont get a chance to do this very often. What do you do?
a. The children are having a great time, they will be disappointed if you make them go
home. Youre not feeling up to it though so you decide to gather the children together
and take them home.
b. You were planning on being here most of the afternoon but the children dont know this.
So you will cut the afternoon short and go home early. That way they still get time to
play but you will also get a rest.
c. The children are enjoying themselves and you dont want to stop this. You decide to
keep an eye on how you feel and if you get too tired you will take them home. This is
just a side effect of having a young family you suppose.
d. Being tired is part of having a young family. Theyre having such fun that you dont want
to stop this. You have water with you this will keep you awake. You will also get a
coffee from the caf as this should give you a boost.

shopping home and unpack it, you then notice a stuffed animal toy on the floor of the car next
to your sons car seat. It appears hes taken this from the supermarket. What do you do?
a. Talk to your son about the toy and ask where he got it. Explain why he cannot just take
things from the supermarket. When you get a chance go back to the supermarket, take
the toy and explain what happened. You hope they understand.
b. Talk to your son about the toy and ask where he got it. Explain why he cannot just take
things from the supermarket. Immediately call the supermarket to explain the situation
and see what they can do. Hopefully they will see the funny side.
c. Talk to your son about the toy and ask where he got it. Explain why he cannot just take
things from the supermarket. You have the toy now but you dont want to let your son
play with this so you take it to the local charity shop.
d. Talk to your son about the toy and ask where he got it. Explain why he cannot just take

How did you get on?

No answers or explanations are provided for the SJT practice test. This is because its
for you to decide the order in which the responses should be placed, based on what
you think is best.

If you got to the end of the test in the time limit and were able to make judgements
about the response order you probably understood what to do.

If you didnt finish the test try to work more quickly next time. If you didnt reach half
way in the test youre probably not working fast enough. Remember if you get stuck on
a question dont worry about it, leave it and go on to the next question and come back
to it at the end if you have time.

However easy you found this practice test we recommend that you erase your answers
and try again, we know that the more you practice the more successful youre likely to
be at the online tests. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Hints and Tips

You could prepare yourself further by:

Asking a friend or relative to make up some more customer service scenarios and
responses for you.
Asking a friend or relative to complete the test, you can then compare your
responses with their responses, then discuss how each of you have come to your
decisions.

The test on the day

The test on the day will require you to rank order your responses to a number of
situations. You will have 45 minutes to do this. Remember you will not lose marks for a
wrong answer so if youre unsure of an answer you can make an educated guess.

Remember, keep practising! By following this advice you will be preparing yourself to
do your best on the day.

The Visual Search Exercise (VSE)

Introduction
The visual search exercise (VSE) is a computer based test. It measures your ability to
focus on visual cues and to multi-task. The VSE consists of three tasks, in the first task
you have to identify errors on a train network, in the second task you have to check for
errors on a signal system and in the third task you have to complete both of these tasks
at the same time. The test is timed so its important that you try to work as quickly and
accurately as possible.

Practice questions
This practice test consists of three tasks, you will complete this in paper and pencil
format. However you will complete the actual exercise on a computer, but by practising
using paper and pencil will still help you develop the skills required to perform well
when completing this exercise.

Task 1
On page 18 you will find your first task. Here you are presented with row after row of
squares with a dot in each corner, the dot moves from the top left hand corner on the
first square, to the top right corner on the second square, then to the bottom right hand
corner of the third square and the bottom left hand corner of the fourth square. Please
see the example below.

The dot then continues to move in this order throughout the rest of the rows of squares
for the whole page. However, occasionally the dot may move in a slightly different
pattern, i.e. missing a corner or going backwards. Its your job to identify when an error
occurs. When you notice an error you must draw a diagonal line through the square.

SupplementarypracticetestsforMTRCrossrailstraindriverassessments

You must:

Work through each row from left to right, line after line.
Search for errors in the movement of the dot around the square.
Look at each square for one second before moving on to the next one.

Ask a friend/family member to time you doing this, ask them to say change when you
need to move on to the next square. If you dont have someone who can assist you
time yourself by saying 1 second in your head as you look at each square, then move
on to the next square and say 1 second again and so on.

Focus on looking for errors in the movement of the dot throughout the whole page and
when you see this you should put a diagonal line through the square and continue the
order of the dot from that square to the next square as quickly and accurately as you
can. While you are completing the exercise if you make an error and notice this do not
worry just move on to the next square.

To do this exercise you will need:

Task 2
On page 22 you will find your second task. Here you are presented with row after row
of groups of letters. Each box within the table contains two columns of letters.

L E A N
X X M P
E L B C
T Y Y E
L L N B
Y T E Y
K K C A

Its your job to decide if the letters in the left hand column are the same as the letters
in the right hand column within each box. If they are the same you dont need to do
anything but if the letters in the right hand column dont match those in the left hand
column this is an error and you must put a diagonal line through this square. Please
note: the letters dont have to be in the same order in each square to match, if the
same letters appear in the left and right column in any order then this is ok and not an
error. Please see the example below.

C L O J P P
Y M
U U W X J K
D Y
T C X W F Z
M D
L T J O Z J

You must:

Work through each row from left to right, line after line.
Search for errors within each group of letters.
Work as quickly and accurately as you can, spend no more than two seconds on
each set of letters.

Ask a friend/family member to time you doing this, ask them to say change when you
need to move on to the next square. If you dont have someone who can assist you
time yourself by counting in your head as you look at each square.

Task 3
On page 26 you will find your third task. Here you need to complete both task 1 and 2
again but this time you must complete them both at the same time.

Youre presented with task 1 on the left hand side of the page, this includes row after
row of squares with a dot in each corner, the dot moves from the top left hand corner
on the first square, to the top right corner on the second square, then to the bottom
right hand corner of the third square and the bottom left hand corner of the fourth
square and so on throughout the block of squares. Occasionally the dot may move in a
slightly different pattern, i.e. missing a corner or going backwards. It is your job to
identify when an error occurs. When this happens put a diagonal line through the
square.

Task 2 is presented on the right hand side of the page, here you will see row after row
of groups of letters. Each box within the table contains two columns of letters. Its your
job to decide if the letters in the left hand column are the same as the letters in the
right hand column of each box. If they are the same you dont need to do anything but
if the letters in the right hand column dont match those in the left hand column this is
an error and you must put a line through this square. Please note: the letters dont have
to be in the same order in each square to match, if the same letters appear in the left
and right column in any order then this is ok and not an error.

Your primary and most important task is task 1 however you must try to complete both
tasks at the same time.

You must:

Work through each row of squares and letters from left to right, line after line.
Search for errors in task 1 and task 2 at the same time.
Work as quickly and accurately as you can, spend no more than 4 seconds in total
looking at each square and each group of letters before moving on to the next
square and group of letters.

Ask a friend/family member to time you doing this, ask them to say change when you
need to move on to the next square and group of letters. If you dont have someone
who can assist you time yourself by using a stopwatch, when you see this says 4
seconds, move on to the next square/group of letters, when this says 8 move on again,
when it says 12 seconds move on again and so on.

Focus on looking for errors with each square and group of letters throughout the whole
page and when you see an error you should put a diagonal line through the square
and/or group of letters as quickly and accurately as you can. While you are completing
the exercise if you make an error and notice this do not worry just move on to the next
square.

Remember your primary task is to look for errors in the movement of the dot around the
square.

To do this exercise you will need:

The block of squares and letters on page 26

A pencil
To sit at a table, make sure youre comfortable as you will be here for a while

As soon as you are ready to start task 3 of the practice test

turn over the page and begin.

How did you get on?

On pages 30-32 of this document youll find the correct answers for task 1, task 2 and
task 3. Have a look at these along with your answers and identify the following:

How many errors you correctly identified in task 1, task 2 & task 3.
How many errors you missed and didnt identify in task 1, task 2 & task 3.
How many errors you identified that were not actually errors in task 1, task 2 &
task 3.

If you failed to identify some errors or identified some errors incorrectly dont worry,
look back over the three tasks and work out where and why you went wrong.

Have you made a similar mistake throughout all three tasks? If so what was this
mistake, what could you do to avoid this mistake in the future? Try the tasks again
focusing on correcting your mistake.
Did you make a mistake in just one task? What was this mistake? Think about why
you made the mistake here and not on the other tasks. Try this task again to see if
you can improve your performance.
Was the mistake you made a simple error? If so you may need to work more
accurately, try not to rush. Try the tasks again, focusing on your accuracy.
Do you understand why you went wrong? If not ask a friend or relative to help you
understand why and then try the task again.

If you identified most of the errors in task 1, 2 & 3, well done! Check over your work to
make sure you fully understand what was expected of you. However well you
performed we recommend that you erase your answers and try again, we know that
the more you practice the more successful youre likely to be on the test. Remember,
practice makes perfect!

Hints and Tips

You could prepare yourself further by:

Developing your focus and multi-tasking skills further by creating your own task, for
example, when youre a passenger in a car or walking outside identify a certain
object that you want to see, this could be a certain colour of t-shirt on a pedestrian
or a person wearing glasses. Every time you see this make a mental check. Then
make the task harder by looking out for this item as your priority plus a series of
other items as your secondary task. Search for all items at the same time. Every
time you see one of the items make a mental check.
Creating your own test out of a written document. You could take a newspaper or
magazine and whenever you see a certain letter put a diagonal line through it. Make
this more difficult by looking for a letter that occurs a lot as well as a letter that
occurs infrequently.

The test on the day

The test on the day will be completed on a computer, it will be similar but not identical
to this paper and pencil practice test. You will be given full instructions of what to do.
The test has a time limit and will automatically stop when you come to the end of each
task, you should therefore work as quickly and accurately as possible.

Remember, keep practising! By following this advice you will be preparing yourself to
do your best on the test.

Final hints and tips

Youve now worked through the online practice tests for MTR Crossrail train driver
assessment, hopefully youve found this useful. Remember:

However you did on the practice tests we recommend that you keep practicing,
using an eraser rub out all your answers and try the practice tests again.
After trying the tests again, if you struggled with anything then go back and work
out where and why this was.
If youve gone over this and still dont understand, then ask a friend or relative who
might be able to help you understand why.
Did you make a simple error? If so then you may need to work a little slower.
Are you making similar mistakes throughout the practice questions? If so, focus on
this aspect of the practice tests as you work through them again.
Did you understand what you needed to do? If you did then Well Done! But dont
get too complacent, go over the practice tests again and make sure you understand
why you did well, and most importantly practice again.
Remember try to work as quickly and accurately as you can, time yourself whilst
completing the practice tests for the SJT and VSE, this will give you a taste of how
the real tests will work.
If youre not sure of an answer mark your best choice.
Once youve practiced using this document, ask a friend or relative to make up
some more similar questions for you, and get them to test you.

Keep practising, practice makes perfect!
