Observation Form 1

Observation Date: _03/28/2017___________ Observation Time: 11:50-12:35________

Teacher Observed: Uzeyir Sevici___________ Subject/Grade Level: Turkish/7th grade___

School Observed: __HSI-Garland____________________Observer:____Mahmut Koca_____

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known, for example, TEKS 111.4. Grade 2.b.)

Students will be able to use prepositions of place and furniture vocabulary

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

He started the class with a warm up activity to review the students previous class
knowledge.

To demonstrate the meanings of these words, he started with real life objects in the
classroom. Then he brought it to the context of places in town.(Play a fly swatter
game to remember the places) For example, to teach next to, He put a book next
to a pen and say, The book is next to the pen. Move them together and apart in a
short distance and repeat, next to. Then you might pick two students and say,
Dao is next to Aleyda.
He also asked short-answer questions such as, Who is Jeremy next to?, Sarah,
who are you sitting next to? Once theyve got it, I will ask, What is the school
next to?, What is your house next to?.
We will do the same with in front of, behind, and near.

Next, He distributed the map and allow students time to look at it. Read out the
names of the roads.

Later, he explained how to tell them the names of all the buildings on the map by
describing their location. Students wrote the correct name in each building. As he
read the text once, He let the students check their map with a partner. Right after,
he read the text second time and gave them time to make any corrections.

Finally, he named a building and ask individual students to say where that building
is.
A simple game of HANGMAN was a good wrap-up for this lesson.
3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

Major materials, he used was computer, projector, power point presentation with
some visual examples. He also demonstrated some daily objects such as book, pen,
and some fruits to demonstrate and teach students the propositions.

4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? (Lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, siccative questioning, etc.)

Lecturing and demonstration was the one of the major strategies he used. He also
opened some discussions on how to use propositions in life. And students tried to
give nice answers. By asking questions, he implemented the siccative questioning
technques.

5-How did the teacher assess learning? (Informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, open-
ended, quiz, feedback etc.) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods

To investigate their learning in this class, he gave them a game named hangman.
Kids found it very entertaining. To me it was very beneficial choice for the teacher
and students to be and get involved in the class activities.

6- What can you say about the teachers philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)

It was partially teacher centered due to the lecturing part in the beginning of the
class. However, it turned to be students centered.

7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?

The teacher has his own routines, to give the students the directions such as in the
beginning of the class students came in to the class and started to work on their
warm up questions. There was not any major discipline problem. Classroom voice
level was pretty moderate. As he was teaching, since the students are really
accustom to his rules and procedures, they listen to the class very carefully. For
instance, when they wanted to ask a question, they raised their hand and wait on
the teachers call.
8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-
task. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?

One of the professional approaches that I notice was that the teacher was calling
students name as he was teaching. For instance, john was playing with his pencil
and not paying too much attention, to attract johns attention in his talked, he said
John, this is the hospital is next to the police department building. And John put
his head up and started to keep his eye at his teacher. I notice that he was using
this method very professionally by repeating a couple of name one after another. At
a time in the class I thought students were going to make fun of john but since
they know, he is one of those teachers does not let them to do so, they chose to
pay attention.

9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)

Since this was a language class and students were supposed to practice the class
effective to be able to get used to it teacher was preferring verbal communication.

10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)

Majority of the students in the class around 45% of them was Hispanic and Latino, around 20%
African American and 5% was Asian and 40 % was white. Among all those students, most
participating was Hispanic students. They were more engage in learning a new language.

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?

It was very enjoyable for students to play a game about the topic that they recently learned. I
think that was very engaging for them.

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?

Since it was a 7th grade class and they like to play games with their friends, I think he made the
best choice to implement the game as an instructional strategy in a very effective way. I would
love to try to implement the same game in my subject area as well.
13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?

1- Establishing classroom rules and enforcing them constantly.

2- Using a positive classroom language rather than negative and depressive one.
