Introduction

This is Fieldwork Report of our fieldwork placement at Universiti Malaysia Pahang

Gambang campus. In this field work, the method of survey used is linear survey. The linear
survey is carried out by measuring only the lengths of the lines, using a tape and a few
ancillary pieces of equipment since there is no angular measurement made at all. In order to
make scaled drawing of the side, using linear survey technique, it is necessary to master the
geometric principles of making the survey, the technique of measuring lengths using a tape,
the method of carrying out the survey and recording the measurements, and the method of
plotting these measurements to scale. Besides that, linear survey the distances are easy to
measure and some the accurate result can be achieved. However, error will be occurred and
need to manage or even minimise the reading error. The method used for measuring distance
in linear survey are pacing, GPS(Global Positioning System), EDM(Electronic Distance
Measurement), taping or chaining, tachymetry and odometers. In doing taping, there are some
procedures to be noted such as tape must always be straight and must not to be twisted. We
use chaining arrow for intermediate points. Tape must be placed horizontally on the ground if
possible. Catenary taping requires correction. The principles of trilateration and offsetting are
applied to all linear survey, which are carried out in two parts which is framework survey and
detail survey.

The equipment used in linear survey are tapes, ranging rod, marking arrow, abney
level and note book. There are three types of error in measurement in linear survey which is
systematic error, random error and mistake. Besides, there are three procedures that are used
in linear survey which is reconnaissance survey, conducting survey and recording the survey.
The application on doing linear survey is towards the dimensions of building features, block
dimension, location and size of site features and setting out for construction.

Objectives

1. To gather data (location man made and natural features) of a parcel of ground
within Universiti Malaysia Pahang Gambang campus area using linear survey
technique.

2. To produce of the scaled drawing of a parcel of ground within Universiti Malaysia

Conclusion

After done the linear survey project, our group have achieved the objective of the linear
survey which we learned to gather all the data of a parcel ground within UMP area using
linear survey technique and the production of the scaled drawings into a map. In this
fieldwork, we must have the understanding on using each of the equipment and how to apply
it to the site works. At the end of this project, we will be able to be responsible to
selfdevelopment and life learning. Besides that, we have the ability to work effectively in a
team demonstrate cooperative effort to carry out a surveying projects. Leadership and co-
operation are two main important values to ensure our task is completed and finished on time.
Though linear survey it seem to be a simple survey to do which measure only the length of
each lines but actually there will be some error to be occur if we did not do it properly or take
it seriously during the fieldwork.

On the other hand, we had learnt to be working from whole to the part which mean in whole
to part is localized and in part to whole be expended. We performed calculations, analysis of
survey data, describe survey plan and map used in construction works.

In conclusion ,the linear surveying play an important role in site surveying, this make the
engineer have a proper and detail study in the land before a planning or construction is
running on the land. To make a proper and accurate linear surveying, we need to use suitable
devices and run the survey on proper procedure of fieldworks accordingly. Furthermore, all
the errors must be taking in consider, make sure those errors are determined and eliminated to
improve the accuracy results. The result we get must be recording neatly and systematically.

Last but not least, those data we had collected must be transverse into plan in the detail scale.
