AS A METHOD OF LANDSLIDE INTRODUCTION

Abstract
Indonesia, as a tropical region, shows high potential for rainfall. At highlands, enormous
rainfall triggers both soil and coastal erosion. Landslides are frequently occured in Semarang in
which some of whose areas are indicated as highlands with unstable soil. This study was carried out
in Deliksari Sukerejo, Gunungpati sub-district of Semarang. Some cases of landslide a soil-mass
movement to slopes. In study area, there are public settlement, so it shows huge potential of natural
disaster.
Various effort have been done to prevent the disaster such as socialization of preventing
landslide given by government, private institutions, colleges, and non-governmental organizations.
However, most of those method only involve for the adults, involving of the children in effort to
understand the disaster mitigation concept are less. One of the effort used was FHP (Funny Hand
Puppet) Story Telling. It aimed to socialize the hazard of landslide as well as the causes to the
society. This method tried to draw childrens attention by handy-puppets shows, so the the purpose
which is hoped could be well-transferred. As many as 24 children attended this shows, and most of
them still did not recognize the hazard of landslide as well as how they dealt with landslide. From
the pre-test, it was gained 84.3% of those who did not know simple ways to avert the landslide.
After the socialization had been given, post-test results showed 94.8% of the children significantly
understood the danger of landslide and knew simple ways to avoid it by educating them using FHP
(Funny Hand Puppet) Story Telling. From the results depicted the increasing of landslide awareness
as 10.5%. All respondent were children between 4-13 years old. The aims of this project, firstly,
increasing the understanding of landslide hazard to the children. Secondly, reducing the losses due
to of landslide hazard. In this project, the author proposed a new method know as (Funny Hand
Puppet) Story Telling. This method provided not only joys and entertainment but also broader
education about landslide happening in their surroundings.

A. Background of the Study
Indonesia, as a tropical region, shows high potential
for rainfall. At highlands, enormous rainfall triggers
both soil and coastal erosion. Landslides are
frequently found in Semarang in which some of
whose areas are highlands with unstable soil. In rainy
season, people of RW VI Deliksari Sukorejo in
Gunungpati sub-district of Semarang show great
anxiety about their houses and ways which always
move due to mass movements of soil in slopes. This

movements gradually occur which do not break the
houses in a moment.
According to Nugroho et al (2012) in the research
location, Deliksari village of Gunungpati, based on the
transverse part of topographic map overlapped with
the results of sondir test, it was gained stratification of
soil layers with heavy soil varying at depth
12.00-26.00 meters and approximate angle of 12
degrees. The depth of landslide layer was predicted at
depth of 10.00-11.00 meters portrayed in dotted lines
in Figure 1. This depth caused all slopes on the
landslide layers to keep moving during rainy season.

The arrangement of land use in the research

location Based on Bakosurtanal map (2001) Figure 2
depicted the land use of study area. Deliksari village is
surrounded by shrubs and grass, and the whole village
is in 2.43 hectare in width. Based on the map of soil
susceptibility movement published by the Directorate
of Geology and Environmental Arrangement of
Bandung in 1991 depicted in Figure 3, it presents that
the study area is susceptible to landslide with medium
susceptibility.
In this area, the susceptibility of soil movement
could be said medium. It could occur in this zone,
particularly in the area bordering river valley,
escarpment, cliff across the street, and troubled slopes.
The previous soil movement is still possible to occur

children still do not acquire early understanding of
their environment which is vulnerable to landslide.

 The environment condition of their place to live,
force all dwellers who has been lived over there know
the risk of disaster would occur, especially the
children. It is not easy to give a better understanding
to children about landslide using the socialization
method for adults. Children are interested in
something fun and new. Thus, it is required innovative
and creative methods to increase their understanding
and concern on the surrounding. One of the means is
FHP (Funny Hand Puppet) Story Telling.
FHP (Funny Hand Puppet) Story Telling is a
story-telling method using handy puppets showed to
children. A child starts expressing his/her emotions
when he/she listens to either cheerful or sad story, and
it can stimulate their participation and enables direct
interaction between the children and their surrounding
in real condition. By this method, children gain not
only joys or entertainment but also broader education
about landslide occurring in their surroundings.
B. General Descriptions of the Society
General descriptions of the society in Deliksari,
Sukorejo, Gunungpati sub-district of Semarang are as
follows:
1. Society susceptibility consists of environmental
condition which is susceptible to landslide, lack of
clean water and sanitation, and poor education.
The main societys capacities are percentage of
society with relatively-high productive age as high
as 64.8%, high motivation to do mutual
cooperation, and such organizations as saving
clubs and lectures which can be empowered to
support disaster mitigation from the results of
applying CBDP (Windraswara dan Widowati,
2010).

2. Educational level in Deliksari can be considered
low since most of the society just have less than
senior-high school degree with elementary-school
graduates as high as 32%. This causes low
prosperity as most of the societies work in
informal sector with uncertain income such as
scavenger, carpenter, janitor, ojek drivers, etc.
3. Society composition consists of 60 families. This
study focused on children aged 5-10 years as many
as 45 children.
C. Research Method
According to Supriyadi (1996) activities of giving
knowledge in terms of landslide to children with
Funny Hand Puppet Story Telling employs structural
analytic synthetic method requiring the following
steps:
1. Approach to the elders of RW VI Deliksari,
Gunungpati, Semarang
Approach to one of the elders in Deliksari intended
to recognize the surrounding condition as well as
childrens understanding about landslide which
sometime occurs in their area.
2. Explanation about landslide using Funny Hand
Puppet Story Telling
A small stage was raised at the meeting hall of
Deliksari to educate the children about landslide using
Funny Hand Puppet Story Telling. This stage
functioned as a place to show handy puppets, and the
story we told was entitled Jeritan si Una. Learning
about landslide using Funny Hand Puppet Story
Telling for children conducted in Deliksari can be
showed in Figure 4 with steps as follows:

D. Results and Discussion
This study employed Funny Hand Puppet Story
Telling as a method for introducing landslide, and the
results can be gained as follows:
1. Children of RW VI Deliksari were able to
understand landslide.
By FHP method, children in Deliksari village,
Sukorejo, Gunungpati sub-district, Semarang were
able to understand landslide occurring in their
surroundings. This can be proved based on the
pre-test and post-test results showing that average
post-test result is higher than the pre-test one.
The percentage is displayed in the following table:

In taking pre-test and post-test, we used question
method containing pictures of landslide, the causes
of landslide, signs, prevention methods, and
disaster mitigation socialized in story using FHP
method, direct explanation, and video displayed.
2. Children started re-explaining about mitigating
landslide.
Children were enthusiastic and initiative to use
handy puppets given to them by trying to use and
tell with their friends using FHP.
3. Children initiated to care for their surrounding
environment.
They were persuaded to care for their surrounding
environment by planting trees. Planting tress was
carried out in three points both in ground and
slopes by the students of Pelangi Nusantara
kindergarten guided by their teachers as well as the
students of Semarang State University. The
plantation could educate children about the
importance of caring for the environment and raise
their social awareness in terms of mutual
cooperation. The children; moreover, were also
engaged to look after the planted trees.

6. The results shows the increasing 10.5% in
understanding the danger of landslide which could
be seen from how the students retold the story to
their friends, how they prevented the landslide by
planting trees.
7. Comparison based on the gender showed that
males were better than females by 13.8% from 24
respondents which consist of 11 males and 13
females.
8. After FHP (Funny Hand Puppet) Story Telling was
conducted, females showed significant result
compared to males by 1%. This happened because
their understanding of the landslide danger raised.

E. Conclusions
From the results of the study Funny Hand Puppet
Story Telling, it can be drawn the following
conclusions:
1. The children succeeded in understanding landslide
mitigation which could be observed from the way
they retold the story, and how they prevented the
landslide was showed by their effort to plant trees.
2. The children initiated to retell the mitigation of
landslide by FHP method.
3. The children tried to take care of their surrounding
environment by planting trees.
4. The teacher of Deliksari Kindergarten used FHP
method as the learning method in order to make
the students get better understanding about the
material.
5. Method of introducing landslide using FHP (Funny
Hand Puppet) Story Telling was a good method to
be applied to children in order to make them know
the danger and signs of landslide.
