1.0 INTRODUCTION

Climate is a condition of the world. In some place the the temperature is independent with
humidity. In order to checked this relation a statistical analysis between temperature and
relative humidity was carried out by data logger. The measurement and monitoring this data
logger is very useful to analysis these values. Data logger is a device used for storing
measurement data. It can be used in wide range of embedded logging applications. Data
loggers are computerized electronic devices that measure and record periodic environmental
conditions.

The data logger is an invaluable tool to collect and analyze experimental data, having
the ability to clearly present real time analysis with sensors and probes able to respond to
parameters that are beyond the normal range available from the most traditional equipment.
Data logger is an electronic device that automatically records, scans and retrieves the data
with high speed and greater efficiency during a test or measurement, at any part of the plant
with time. A data logger works with sensors to convert physical phenomena and stimuli into
electronic signals such as voltage or current. These electronic signals are then converted into
binary data. The binary data is then easily analyzed by software and stored on memory for
post process analysis.

Relative humidity is used to indicates how moist the air is.it is defined as the ratio of
the water vapor density to the saturation water vapor density, usually expressed in percent.
Data logger refers to a battery powered device equipped with sensors and a microprocessor to

monitor and record the relative humidity. Most of the humidity data loggers have LCD
displays so the user can view data on the spot. This loggers record the relative humidity using
their own internal sensors.

There is a simple logger which is easy to use. It is suitable for traveler and can
produce a pdf report as proof as a good practice. If the user needs to receive alarms and view
data from a remote location, user can use a wireless data logger to check data online from any
web including PC, laptop or mobile device. Some models enable user to receive alarms
including SMS texts messages and emails.

Relative Humidity is a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air at a particular
temperature compared with the total amount of water the air can hold at the same
temperature. In this experiment, you will determine relative humidity in your classroom.

Objectives

1. Use a computer and two temperature probes to measure temperature. (Logger Lite
software)
2. Determine relative humidity.
3. Explain the results.

Materials

Computer masking tape, Logger Lite software beaker, 2 Temperature Probes water, Piece of
shoelace, Masking Tape, Beaker, Water

Procedure

1. Slip Probe 2 into a 5 cm of shoelace until the probe tip is at the middle of shoelace
piece as shown in Figure 1. Fasten the shoelace to the probe with masking tape.

2. Connect the Temperature Probes. Start the Vernier data-collection program (Logger
Lite).
3. Wet the shoelace on Probe 2 by placing it into a beaker of water that is at or above
room temperature. Probe 1 is to stay dry.
4. Click to begin data collection. Take a probe in each hand and gently wave the
probes in the air.
5. Continue waving the probes until the temperatures measures by both probes stop
changing, and then click to end data collection. Record both final
temperatures.
6. Choose Store Latest Run from the experiment menu to store your data.
7. If time permits, repeat steps 3-6 for the next two days and compare results.

Result and Data

Questions

1. In the space provided in your data table, subtract to find the difference between the
dry-probe (Probe 1) and wet-probe (Probe 2) temperatures at each site.

6
2. Determine the relative humidity for each day by using the Relative Humidity table in
Table 1.
a. Find the temperature difference you calculated in Step 1 at the top of the table.
Keep one finger on this number.
b. Find the dry probe (Probe 1) temperature in the first column of the table.
c. Look across the row until you find the column marked with your finger. This
is the relative humidity.
d. Record this number in your data table.
3. How did the wet probe temperature compare with the dry probe temperature? Explain.
4. What is the relationship between humidity and temperature in this experiment?

3.0 FUN FACTS ABOUT RELATIVE HUMIDITY

Humidity is for the bugs, especially the moths.

When it comes to wet heat in the insect world, its the little guy that thrives. Goggy
Davidowitz, an entomologist at the University of Arizona explains that smaller bugs are more
likely to dehydrate because they have a larger surface area relative to their whole body size.
Because most bugs are small, and humidity increases survivorship, insects seek moist
climates, Davidowitz said.

Moths make the most of moist climates. Davidowitzs lab studies hawkmoths
(Manduca Sexta). These insects can detect a 4 percent difference in humidity by sensing
changes in flower nectar evaporation. Increases in humidity help these moths detect which
flowers are high in nectar.

Humidity brought us tonal language

Our vocal cords are comprised of a pair of mucus membranes that stretch across the voice
box, or larynx. They vibrate, controlling the air from the lungs that flows by as we speak or
sing. The level of moisture in the air affects the elasticity of our vocal cords. Singers can tell
you that it is harder to carry a tune in a dry environment.

Weve known for decades that you are more likely to be on pitch in humid
environments. More recently, researchers theorized that speech was one of many human
behaviors adapted to fit environment. After looking at more than 3,700 languages, they

7
discovered that tonal languages, like Chinese and Vietnamese, rarely developed in dry
climates.

Fifty percent humidity is a sponge half full

Humidity describes the amount of water vapor or water molecules in the air. Soaking a
sponge with more water than it can hold would cause it to drip. But this dripping doesnt
always symbolize rainfall. The relative humidity measured on the ground (where the sponge
is) doesnt reflect moisture levels miles above in the sky. Rain occurs when the rising air can
no longer hold the water droplets that have formed clouds high in the sky. (Clouds can form
closer to the ground too - thats fog). The temperature and atmospheric pressure changes as
you ascend into the sky - the air gets colder and thinner. So 100 percent humidity might not
mean rain, but it does mean dew.

4.0 ADVANTAGES

Animals

High humidity generally makes the temperature of the air more constant, allowing very little
difference between high and low temperatures as seen in the drier climates. Animals will be
healthier in general with more stable daily temperatures. Also, high humidity is relative to the
amount of precipitation any given climate receives, which in turn provides adequate moisture
for abundant growth of plant and food for the food chain. Now you know why your dog is
irritable in the summers and feels charged during the monsoon and winter months.

Skin

Acne problems do not seem to leave youshift to a humid place. Humidity is one of your
skin's best friends. It's an essential for healthy, beautiful skin. Low humidity causes dry skin,
dry hair, itching and chapping. Whereas, high humidity leaves the skin supple, fresh and

8
glowing which is why dermatologists and cosmetologists always suggest using humidifiers in
homes in drier climates to maintain the relative humidity levels of 40%.

Flu

Every year the flu season packs a punch and spoils everyones health. But now, just a simple
trick can keep this major flu season in control. A new research has revealed a simple way to
reduce the risk of infection in an indoor setting. Just hike up humidity levels! Researchers
say, just by raising indoor relative humidity levels to 43 percent or above, 86 percent of
airborne virus particles can be left powerless. This is another instance where humidifiers can
work wonders!

5.0 DISADVANTAGES

Health

A humid environment is a breeding ground for all sorts of microscopic organisms that can
harm human health. Mildew and mold spores thrive in it, and it can be highly toxic once they
get into human body. If mold is clearly visible inside home, people will have a problem that
needs immediate attention. Even if there are no signs, mold and mildew can still spread
throughout the vents, or behind walls.

Dust mites also love humidity, and theyre one of the biggest enemies for people who
suffer from asthma and allergies. Needless to say, all sorts of bacteria can be found in spaces
with high relative humidity. People who live in homes that are struck by mold growth and
mildew get sick more often, and their overall health is a lot poorer. Asthma sufferers also
experiences more frequent attacks. By getting a dehumidifier, it is possible to solve these
problems (or at the very least alleviate them).

Home

Health always comes first, but high humidity levels can have a negative effect in people
home as well which is not something that should be taken lightly! For example, basements
and crawl spaces are extremely humid and poorly ventilated. Mold and mildew is sure to

9
develop, and humidity can seep into every pore of the house, compromising its structural
integrity. The most extreme example is when humidity makes its way into the foundations of
a house. Mold and mildew can get even spread inside walls!

How chairs or guitars are made? In order to bend wood without breaking it, a person have
to expose it to steam for a period of time. Humidity does the same thing to woodwork inside
a house. Floorboards begin to creak and bend as a result, and the furniture will get damaged
if a person dont deal with the issue. Peeling paint and wet stains on the wall are also warning
signs that humidity levels are out of control.

6.0 CONCLUSION

These experiment was successful and it was quick and easy to set up. In addition, the
accuracy of results is higher compared to traditional experiment which means do not use any
software and modern apparatus.
