ABSTRACT

Okra (Abelmoschusesculentus) is a perennial flowering plant in Malvaceae (Mollows)

family, related to cotton, hibiscus, and hollyhock. It is also known by the synonym Hibiscus

esculentus and the common name ladys fingers, thought to be a fanciful reference to the slender,

finger-shaped fruits of some cultivars. The okra plant bears numerous dark green colored pods

and it takes about 45-60 days to get ready-to-harvest fruits. Okra is a good source of Vitamin C

and A, also B complex, iron and calcium. The plant cultivated throughout the tropical and warm

temperate regions around the world for their phytonutrients rich pods. It grows well-drained and

manure rich soil.

A research from the Assessment II students in The Adelphi College would like to find out

what is the best fertilizer to be used in growing an okra plant. Based on the common observation,

fertilizer has a big contribution not only on the okra but in any kind of plants. The researchers

used 500 grams of UREA and sack of Carabao manure. UREA was mixed in 8 liters of water

for 5 minutes and Carabao manure was crashed into small pieces. Each plant was measured by

their heights, average number of leaves, average length of leaves, number of pods, average size

of pods, and average weight of the pods.

Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used as a statistical tool to determine its

effectiveness in sizes, weight and quantity. This test indicated that there is no significant

difference among the three treatments. Carabao Manure and UREA can actually use as a

fertilizer in growing an okra plant.

The sizes, weight and quantity of the okra plants receiving Carabao Manure and UREA

were significantly greater and closer to each other than that of the okra grown without fertilizer.

The findings supported the hypothesis that Carabao Manure and UREA have similar effects on

the growth and development of okra. The findings may be explained by the facts that both of the

aforementioned treatments have the similar nutrients necessary for promoting plant growth and

development.

Perform further investigation by using other types of manure or commercial fertilizer and

consider other factors affecting the experiment.
