R\ edlands Sciioot. oF Music March 6, 2017 To Whom It May Concern: It gives me pleasure to offer my high recommendation of Ruben Pascual as a musician and ‘educator. I have worked with Mr. Pascual over the last few years as he pursued his Masters of Music degree here at the University of Redlands. As Artist Teacher of Clarinet at University of Redlands School of Music, I have coached Mr. Pascual in various chamber music settings with ensembles that included clarinet students. He not only was thoroughly prepared on his part, but truly displayed an intelligence and sensitivity to the work at hand, as well as wonderful communication skills by playing and discussing the music. My students not only enjoyed working with him, but also learned a lot from each collaboration. Mr, Pascual has also earned the honor of performing as a student member of the professional orchestra which performs on our campus, the Redlands Symphony Orchestra. This is an opportunity granted to only the most talented and hard working students who pass a rigorous auditions mirroring a professional procedure for orchestral employment. I was on the audition committee who approved his eligibility to be a part of the viola section of the RSO. Mr. Pascual embodies in his playing and approach to playing responsibilities all the elements valued by professional musicians. Ruben Pascual was also a student in the Woodwind Techniques course which I teach here at the University. I observed him and evaluated him conducting and rehearsing a large group as well as a private lesson situation. In both cases, Mr. Pascual was attentive, patient, helpful, and inspiring, He had a great approach in both settings. He began with getting students engaged and ready with ‘warm-ups, followed by instruction, good guidance in performance, continuing with feedback and rehearsal, and concluding with improved guided performance. He was able to readily perceive mistakes and areas which needed improvement, and offer specific solutions. Mr. Pascual has a quiet intensity which is very commanding, but he is also very positive and encouraging. He was one of the best examples of a knowledgeable and confident student leader that I have seen in the ‘years that I have been teaching the Woodwind Techniques course. Mr. Ruben Pascual would be a valuable asset as a musician and educator to the students and faculty of any music program.
