Starting a student job while studying as
a non-Dutch student.
It may seem overwhelming, but it need not be.
Your potential employers may not be used to hiring non-Dutch
students.
Be proactive! Professors or institutions within the university
may not consider that you want to work with them, so
approach them.
Suggest FlexDelft. If a TU Delft institution hires you
through the FlexDelft office, they will not be required to pay
the VAT for your work out of their budget.
Working through FlexDelft is simple.
After your supervisor starts the on-line registration, you need to
go there to register with them. Make sure to bring your BSN
number, bank account information and a valid ID. They will ask
you to fill out a Dutch tax form, but will explain it to you. Once
you are registered, you will turn in time sheets to the FlexDelft
office each week that you work.
Working while studying requires basic
health insurance.
Once you start working, even a part-time student job, you must
buy the Dutch basic health insurance. This means you can no
longer be insured only by IPS or similar insurances.

Where to get Basic Health Insurance:
TU Delft has a contract with the insurance company OHRA to
provide a discount for TU Delft employees. If you have a student
job at the university, you can also receive this. You can find
more information about this on the TU Delft website. You will
need to use the TU Delft code 219 to receive the discount.
How to afford Basic Health Insurance:
Basic health insurance costs about 100 per month. This may be
a significant increase to your previous payments, but to help
those with a low income pay for this insurance, the Dutch
government pays such individuals a healthcare allowance of
almost 70 per month. Most likely you qualify for this allowance.
