The principal reference for the Convex C coefficient and its relation to Muskingum x is from
the Soil Conservation Service, National Engineering Handbook, Section 4 Hydrology, Chapter
17, Flood Routing by Victor Mockus, 1972. See page 17-51 of that document.
Coincident Flow
In our HEC-HMS model, we assumed that the storm for each frequency occurred over the entire
basin. Therefore, the flow from each sub basin entering their respective confluence of the
Guadalquiver River was of the same frequency as the river. This is an acceptable and
conservative assumption for a mapping project. The mapping project is in a sense a design
project.
It is not necessarily always the case for natural conditions such as when a model is used to
recreate historical event. For example, assume that a historical flow from the Sella sub basin has
occurred and that it was equal to a 100-year event over that basin. It is possible, and even very
likely that the flow in the Quadalquiver River event was of a different frequency than that of the
Sella storm. In other words, other larger or even smaller storms could have been occurring
elsewhere within the basin thus resulting in an unknown flow condition for the river at the
confluence with the Sella Quebrada.
The probability of variation in the natural world is significant. Again, we usually determine the
conditions for specific design simulations. We do not when recreating historic events.
In addition, some design conditions may require that we test different confluence conditions to
determine what may be the critical combination of frequency flow on each stream. There may
also be times that we need to know the probable condition if the tests prove that the critical
combination will result in a very expensive, unreasonable design.
Determining the probable conditions of flow from two or more different streams at a confluence
is complex. As already explained, we have a reason to assume equal frequency coverage
because of the nature of the mapping project. We should, however, demonstrate that the team
was aware of the issue and that the primary reference is Estimating Joint Probabilities of
Design Coincident Flows at Stream, Confluences, NCHRP 15-36, Kilgore et al, 2011.
