Abstract

Nina Fernanda Salmo, May 11, 2017 Activities of Men from ISPCS GRADE XI that

are Considered as Sexual Harassment by the Women of the Same Section.

The purpose of this research is to present the reason why men from ISPSC GRADE XI

act such malicious behavior. Harassment is such a sensitive issue that continuously sparks debate

and discussion. The phase of the research involves the given questionnaire where we identify

what trigger such behavior and how does it affects woman. It would portray the struggles of the

ladies of the same section who is suffered from the consequences of such actions. It will

enlighten its readers the real reason why malicious behavior exist among men and how to affects

women.

Introduction

Harassment is a form of discrimination. It involves any unwanted physical or verbal behavior

that offends or humiliates you. Generally, harassment is a behavior that persists every time.

Serious one time incidents can also sometimes be considered harassment.

Harassment occurs when someone:

Makes you unwelcome remarks or jokes about your race, religious, sex, age, disability or

any other of the ground of discrimination.

Threatens or intimidates you.
Makes unwelcome physical contact with you such as touching, patting, pinching or

punching, which can be considered ASSAULT.

Body

Sexual harassment is, above all, a manifestation of power relations. Women are much more

likely to be victims of sexual harassment precisely because they more often than men lack power,

are in more vulnerable and insecure positions, lack self-confidence, or have been socialized to

suffer in silence. In order to understand why women endure the vast majority of sexual

harassment, it important to look at same of the underlying causes of this phenomenon.

Violence and Male Self-Perception

The relationship between the sexes in many countries around the world includes a considerable

amount of violence against women. Data about the United State indicate that one out of ten

women are raped or sexually assaulted during their lives, while more than half of all women

living with men have experienced a battering or similar incident of domestic violence. (William

Petrocelli)

The problem of sexual harassment relates to the roles which are attributed to men and women in

social and economic life which in turn directly or indirectly affects womens positions.

With the definition above, this paper seek to answer the following questions;

What actions of men from ISPSC GRADE XI STUDENTS that are considered

harassment by the women of the same section?

What triggers such behavior?
How does it affect women?
In this study, the actions that are considered as sexual harassment are whistling, cat-call,

unwarranted attention, malicious stare, and chancing which are doing by the women of the same

section.

On the survey questionnaire addressed to men, they will be going to answer the following

questions:

What triggers you to do such actions?

Do you know the consequences of doing such? And;
What will you do to prevent yourself from committing such behavior?

On the survey questionnaire addressed to women, they will going to fill up the following actions

which are considered harassment by checking YES if they feel offended by those activities

usually done by men. And if not, they will be mark NO then specify. And they will interview on

how does these activities/behavior affect they physically and academically.

Results and Discussion

Survey questionnaire addressed to women

Yes No
Whistling 9 0
Catcall 6 3
Unwarranted attention 5 4
Malicious stare 8 1
Chancing 9 0

With the gathered information from the women of grade 11 students, majority of them feel

unsecured, disrespected and violated with the mention behavior. 100% of the women feel

uneasy with men whistling, 65% feel violated with the unwarranted attention, 86% set

disrespected by men giving malicious stare, 70% feel uneasy with being cat-called, and 100% of

the women population in grade 11 feel violated with chancing.

Based from the results of the interview to the grade 11 women, 96% of them are offended,

irritated, violated and disrespected while 4% of them fell flattered because of the attention or

action they received. This is how these behavior affect them emotionally.

Academically, there is no clear relation or effect of such behaviors. Based from their answers,

these actions dont have a huge impact to their performance as a whole.

Survey questionnaire addressed to men:

Based from the results of survey questionnaire addressed to men, 75% of men do these behaviors

to show appreciation, while remaining 25% just want to be noticed.

When asked if they are aware of the consequences of such actions, all of them answered NO

because they just do it for fun and with a clean intention and to be noticed as well.
The last question to them was about ways on how to prevent themselves from doing such acts

that are considered harassment. They all agreed to be more sensitive towards the feelings of their

girl classmates. And be more vigilant when other men do it.

Conclusion
After conducting research study to the grade 11 students, the researcher found out that there are

activities that are considered inappropriate to the girls in the said section. Though there is no

direct effect of the behaviors to them academically, girls still tend to feel violated and offended.

Some of them, however, dont mind such behavior and dont see it as harassment.

In an attempt to clarify this, we have included the boys in this survey to know what their

perspective is regarding this matter. The researcher found out that boys are generally unaware

that what they are doing is offensive and abusive. The survey also shows that boys have varied

reasons are just to show appreciation and get some attention from girls.

Recommendation

After conducting this study, the researcher found out that harassment is relative. It depends on

how the girls react on what actions they receive. This is the case in this section. However, the

world as a whole may see it differently. Thus, to avoid this feeling of being harassed, it is really

important for us to be very vigilant when someone does behavior. Women should also be vocal

about how they feel so that a discussion could be started to talk about how everyone could end

this acts.

Sexual harassment is not a joke and should not even be taken lightly. Therefore, the researcher

would like to recommend that we should all be more sensitive with actions towards each and

every one.
