Former Miss America, Heather French Henry once said that volunteering is the very

core of a human. No one has made it through life without someone elses help. For my service

hour requirement, I volunteered at many places such as the Mars Home for Youth Family

Services, my parish, and at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. My two favorite volunteer

opportunities include helping clean the attic at the Mars Home for Youth and helping fight

hunger through Food for the Hungry at the Toby Mac concert.

My friends and I volunteered at the Mars Home for Youth in January. When we arrived,

the development assistant informed us that they needed help cleaning and organizing their

donation room. Upon entering the room, our eyes widened and our mouths dropped. There was

literally donations scattered all over the place. We organized everything in that room, from

school supplies, to toys and board games, and holiday decorations. After three hours, we

successfully organized their donation room. I had a lot of fun cleaning because I was with my

friends and we had visibly made a difference in helping out. Now that their donation room is

organized, it is easier for the workers and other volunteers to find the supplies they need and no

donation will go to waste.

My other favorite volunteer opportunity was at the Toby Mac concert. Upon our arrival,

my friends and I were instructed to hand out name tags to all of the volunteers. When everyone

was there, they volunteer director took us up to a room to explain what we were doing. We were

all helping out with the Food for the Hungry campaign that would take place during the
intermission. Food for the Hungry works in more than 20 countries around the world providing

life-changing resources such as clean water, medical aid, food, education, vocational training,

spiritual development, and hope. We were all given a child packet that included a picture and

name of the child that needed sponsored before the show. As instructed, we were to inform

people about the program. For just $35 a month, a single person, family, or group can sponsor a

child. When intermission came, a speaker spoke about his personal experience with helping with

Food for the Hungry and all of the volunteers were instructed to hide throughout the stadium.

When the speaker said he had volunteers around the stadium, we all stood up and waved our

packets around. Together, we helped support hundreds of poverty-stricken children.

My favorite part about volunteering at this event was the realization that we were feeding

the hungry. Although I cannot directly see the outcome of the work I had done, I am confident

that there are children who are being helped with the donations we received that night. I also was

surprised about how much fun the actual concert was and I am glad that I got to see it with my

friends. We were so inspired that night that we decided to support a child ourselves. Eduardo is a

child from Peru and our team decided that we will sponsor him. Overall, I acquired many skills

through the volunteer work that I did.
