INTRODUCTION TO PROOF: HOMEWORK 11

DUE THURSDAY, APRIL 21ST AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS

You may work on homework together, but you must write up your solutions individually
and write the names of the individuals with whom you worked. For full credit, show all work
and explain your work as described on the syllabus. If you use any materials outside of the
course materials, e.g., the internet or a different book, make sure to provide a short citation.
(1) For each of the following relations, please answer the following questions (briefly
justify your answers).
(i) (3 points) Is the relation a function?
(ii) (3 points) If the relation is a function, what are its domain and image?
(iii) (3 points) Is the inverse also a function? If so, what is the inverse function?
The relations of interest are
(a) {(x, y) : x, y Z, y = 2x}.
(b) {(x, y) Z Z : xy = 0}.
(c) {(x, y) : x, y Z, x + y = 0}.
(d) {(x, y) Z Z : y = x2 }.
(e) {(x, y) Z Z, x|y}.
(f) {(x, y) : x, y R, x2 + y 2 = 1}.
(2) (5 points) Suppose that R is an equivalence relation on a set A and suppose a, b A.
Prove that a [b] iff b [a].
(3) (5 points) Let R be the relation on Z where aRb iff 4|a2 b2 . Prove that R is an
equivalence relation on Z.
