Censorship and its effects in Malaysia and
Indonesia

We are going to do a comparative study on
censorship between Malaysia and Indonesia,
along with its effects and the steps that these
two countries take to censor banned content
Internet censorship is the control or
suppression of what can be accessed,
published, or viewed on the Internet. It may
be carried out by governments or by private
organizations at the behest of government,
regulators, or on their own initiative.
We will also examine the Laws and Acts that
in these two countries that deal with
Censorship, such as:
o The Communications Decency Act
(CDA)
o The Electronic Communication
Transactional Records Act
o The Child Pornography Prevention
Act
Effects of censorship 5 min
The society might get false information and if
they want to speak something, it cannot be
heard by others, especially network
Can change the way people think on certain
issues. Using media can change peoples
idea and change the way people behave
On the bright side, censorship can control the
content of media thus, control the cases of
adultery as it can censor some sexual
content in videos or pictures. Censorship is
somehow good for children
Influential people like politicians can hide
their hidden propaganda. They also tend to
spread their ideas and use censorship to hide
the bad side of their ideas

Introduction about Malaysias internet


Malaysia was ranked 146th (out of 180) in
the Worldwide Press Freedom Index by
Reporters without Borders.
in July 2015, the Malaysian government has
blocked at least ten websites, including
online news portals and private blogs, (for 5 min
reporting about the scandal surrounding
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak
over his mysterious private dealings with
$700 million in funds).
Pornography of any kind is strictly banned in
Malaysia.
Censorship in Indonesia 5 min
Introduction about Indonesias internet
In 2014, Indonesia announced it was
tightening the internet usage among the
citizen because the ministry of information
and communication wants to promote
healthy and safe use of the internet.
Netflix, Vimeo and Reedit have been blocked
by the internet in Indonesia because based
on the largest telco provider in the country
PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) wants
to protect Indonesian from unregulated
content that does not comply with countrys
regulations
Tumblr and YouTube have been blocked once
because the government said that Tumblr
contains a pornographic content and
YouTube, because they once uploaded about
one short film that mocked Prophet
Muhammad SAW and it is kind of sensitive
issue.
Users for YouTube do not need to sign up, if
they want to watch a music video or short
film for 18 years old and above.
