Tips for ISC Board Exams : ISC English
Language 2016
ISC Boards exams are not very tough to score. You just need to prepare well and know
how to answer the questions asked. Not much resources are available online for ISC
English Language and even if there are, they go into the general instructions that we
all already know. I had not blogged for a long time on this blog. When I opened it after
a year, I realized that it has 10,000 hits already and the most searched posts were
those related to ISC Board exams and after that I decided that I will post suggestions
on all the ISC Science stream papers(As I am from Science Stream).

I had myself appeared in ISC Exams in the year 2013. Let me share some tips that
might help you get a decent score in English. Remember that in ISC, the English score
is the average score of the Language and Literature paper. So, you cant afford to do
poorly in any section. Can you get 90+ in ISC English. The answer is YES but it is a bit
challenging. Lets break the entire exam into sections and tackle each section
separately.

1. The first question demands a composition of around 500 words on any one of
the 6 topics that usually contain reflective, narrative, descriptive, argumentative, and
short story. So in this question, you have a large variety of questions that you can
attempt. This is the section where students tend to lose the maximum marks. To score
anything more than 25 out of 30 will be great and this is achievable if some points are
kept in mind.

I remember my teacher used to make us pen down all the ideas as rough work.
Then we used to analyse which points are relevant and any repetitions were
eliminated. Then the points were arranged in sequential order. Then each point can be
expanded into a paragraph with relevant examples wherever possible, to put forth
your views to the examiner clearly.

Your essay should be legible enough and should not have grammatical errors.
The impression I got from the faculty members who taught us was that even if the
content of the essay is not very sophisticated, if it is written without spelling
errors and grammatical errors, a good score is absolutely within your reach. If you
have poor handwriting, then you need to work on it right away. Your excellent essay
may get less than 20 if your handwriting is not readable. You have to get above 25 in
this section. Then only you can think of getting 90+. I would suggest going through the
range of questions ISC has asked the candidates in the past 10 years at least. Just
know the topics and see if you are able to atleast relate to those topics. Your
knowledge in extra-curricular domains will come in handy here. It will give you more
content to write.
11
Do not make your essay boring. Even without top notch writing , you can make
your essay look interesting. You must avoid using same words often. This might
signal that you lack vocabulary skills. Try using connectives like Nevertheless, To
begin with to maintain the flow of ideas in your composition. Practice at least five
compositions of the type you want to attempt. I liked attempting argumentative type
of questions as being a student of science, to put forth my opinions about a given
argument was much easier for me than describing places or incidents that require
explaining things in great detail. This is your choice to make. I would suggest you all to
try avoiding the question on short story. It is difficult to put in all the features of a short
story( write an interesting story without errors and then give it a surprise ending) when
you cant spend more than an hour on question 1.

I would suggest you to keep 5-10 minutes for the rough planning. Do this at the
last page and cancel it later with R.W or Please Omit. You have to finish your essay
in 35-40 minutes. Keep 5 minutes for revision(if possible).

2. The second question requires the candidates to write a report. This section is
where we were given a lot of practice at school. There is a wide range of topics that
you should be ready with, as you dont have any choice in this section. You should
prepare at least one report from each area, like one book review, one film review, a
first information report, a newspaper article, report on natural calamity, a report on a
cultural fest organised by your club etc. You must look at the previous year question
papers to get a sense of the types of report you should be prepared with. The good
thing about this question is that the outline is already given to you. I would suggest
you to cover all the points mentioned in the guidelines. There are specific dos
and dont regarding every type of report writing. Where to write the date(like in the
case of a newspaper article) or whom to address to (as in the case of F.I.R) are very
important. The knowledge of the overall structure of these specific kinds of
reports is very important. A simple report containing all the points mentioned in the
guidelines and abiding by the proper syntax of that report is sure to get a 18+ score
here.Spend not more than 30 minutes on this question.

3. Question 3 is based on grammar and is the most scoring question in the

entire paper. A perfect score is not only possible, it is a must if you want to get
above 90 in this paper. Practice questions from all sources. I had finished solving each
and every grammar related question from Total English Book before the board exams.
Total English has a very exam oriented lesson plan and I would highly recommend
solving that book. In the question where you have to complete a sentence, DO NOT
write the question. Your time is precious. In fill in the blanks questions DO NOT write
the entire sentence and this is usually mentioned explicitly in the question paper. If
you still write the full sentences, you give an impression that you did not care to read
the question properly. In the question regarding filling in the blanks in a paragraph,
you must write the answers with proper answer number. Eg: (1)went. A mistake here
and you lose marks unnecessarily. It is important to note that in several sentences in
the sub part Q3.b, there can be more than one suitable word. In such cases, the board
takes into account all possible alternatives.Spend not more than 20 minutes on
this question.

12
4.Question 4 is a comprehension based question. This is one area where the first
15 minute reading time will come in handy. After choosing the composition you will
attempt, you also need to read the comprehension in this time. Underline the key
ideas. These will help in summary writing. In small questions where you are asked to
make sentences, you should not change the form of the word. If you have been asked
to make a sentence with master, you must write a sentence that has master in a
meaning other than what has already been involved with it in the passage. Question
and answers are pretty straightforward where you are supposed to write the answer in
your own words but it should be relevant to the passage. For the summary writing
part, you first have to write all the points that you think are relevant to the
summary.INCLUDE ALL THE POINTS. You can get a full score in this question if the
examiner is able to find those 6 key points that he/she has in the answer key provided
by the board. So if you include all the key points of the entire comprehension, you will
have those magical 6 points as well. Sometimes the relevant points are not
adjacently mentioned in the passage and the students tend to locally search the
relevant portions of the comprehension only.

As for summary writing, I remember that we had been instructed to create a table of
20 rows having 5 columns that gave us exactly 100 spaces to fill in our 100 words of
summary. We used to do a rough summary first and then the final summary and
because of prior practice, we could always manage to complete the summary in
exactly 100 words including all the relevant points. Now here you can only pray that
the points you consider key are key for ISC board as well. The marks you get here
depends on the number of points that you have mentioned which tally with the answer
key provided by ISC Board.

You can attempt the questions in whichever order you feel comfortable. For me, it was
grammer first, then report, then comprehension and the composition at the end. You
can have it your way, but WRITE THE CORRECT QUESTION NUMBER
corresponding to your answers.

Manage your time well. Give at least one mock exam before the boards with
proper timing restrictions and self evaluate your paper. Ask your teachers for help. ISC
Exams have a fixed structure of question setting that gives you an advantage. You
canprepare yourself section wise. Read good articles if possible.Practice a
lot.Give yourself enough time to prepare yourself. Your English score matters at the
time of percentile calculation in JEE Mains and in JEE Advanced as well. Getting 90+ in
English is indeed possible, with smart planning and constant practice.

Every year ISC publishes a pupil analysis report wherein they evaluate the
performance of the candidate who appeared last year and also give valuable
suggestions on the kind of mistakes students often make. You must go
through this report. Below is the link to access that report.
