Title 2D Geometry review

Subject Area(s) Math
Grade Level 7th-9th, geometry is a grey are
in CC.
Summary of the Lesson Day 1
The first day is spent reviewing
2D geometry and formulas. As
it is mostly review, the lesson
will be primarily lecturing, with
some added questions
Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.G.B.6
Solve real-world and
mathematical problems
involving area, volume and
surface area of two- and three-
dimensional objects composed
of triangles, quadrilaterals,
polygons, cubes, and right
prisms.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.G.C.9
Know the formulas for the
volumes of cones, cylinders,
and spheres and use them to
solve real-world and
mathematical problems.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.
A.1
Use geometric shapes, their
measures, and their properties
to describe objects (e.g.,
modeling a tree trunk or a
human torso as a cylinder).
Essential Questions Can the student find the Area
and Perimeter of a given
simple 2D shape given its
dimensions?
Objectives Students will be able to
calculate the area of a figure.
Students will be able to explain
the formulas behind a 2D
shape.
Vocabulary: Area: The amount of space an
object takes up in 2D space
Perimeter: The summative
length of an objects sides
Polygon: A 2D shape composed
of straight lines
Regular Polygon: A Convex
Polygon with each side and
angle being congruent.

Estimated Time 50 minutes

Materials Required Projector to display book
problems
Chalkboard to draw and notate
shapes
Procedure BEFORE:
Affirm that students know
how to take the areas of
common 2d shapes-
triangles, squares, circles-
with an entrance ticket
DURING:
Formally discuss Area and
Perimeter measures for
Squares, triangles, circles,
N-Gons and composite
shapes.
AFTER:
A short exit ticket
describing a carpeting
problem.
Formative Assessment As new formulas are
introduced, have students
practice them in groups. Have
groups answer questions
together and check group
results.
Student Resources No planned extra resources
beyond basic suplies
(pencil+paper). Students
expected to produce and re-
produce sketches.
Accommodations I will follow the students IEP.
Assessment Students are taxed with finding
how much carpeting to use for
an octagonal ballroom.
Afterwards they have to find
out how much wallpaper to use
given the room is of a certain
uniform height (a lead in for
next class, surface Area) that
uses the Perimeter knowledge.
