Filling SF6 gas in single pressure puffer
type CB

SF6 gas is transported in liquid form in cylinders of 15kg, 40kg ,

100kg size.
Gas cylinder has a valve on top. On opening valve, SF6 is
released in gaseous form.
Cb is provided with a gas valve and gas monitoring system. A
braided teflon hose is connected between gas cylinder , gas
handling unit and CB valve. Before filling gas , CB is evacuated
and air & moisture is removed .
After evacuation to about 2mm Hg , gas from cylinder is
admitted into CB
At desired pressure on gauge , gas valve on cb is closed
Regeneration of gas

Regeneration of gas: in periodic mtc, SF6 sample from CB is

collected and tested for moiture and other impurities.(IEC376).
Gas is circulated thru filters containing activated alumina.
Activated alumina absorbs impurities like S2F2, SF4 , moisture.
Gas can be reused after regeneration.
Gas monitoring system
SF6 CB are provided with gas monitoring system which
comprises, temp compensated pressure switches, provision for
filling and removing gas, provision for heating gas.
Pressure swithes are arranged such --- for certain reduction
in pressure, an alarm
--- for further reduction in pressure, CB gets locked or
tripped
typical settings :-
normal pressure of SF 6 gas : 5.5 kg /cm2
alarm on low pressure : 4.5 kg/cm2
lock-out or tripping : 4 kg cm2
SF6 gas handling unit

Used for filling gas in CB and for reclaiming gas from CB.
Comprises a vacuum pump, a compressor , an aux receiver, gas
filtering unit, valves , piping .
Functions:
1. evacuation of cb
2. tranferring gas from cylinder to cb
3. reclaiming gas from cb into service tank
4. filtering the arced gas by circulating it thru foltering units
continuously for 10 to 20hrs
SF6 Gas Handling Safety Practices
Safety practices when handling SF6 gas-insulated apparatus are:
Perform SF6 gas handling, filling or reclaiming outdoors;
If procedures involving SF6 gas insulated equipment must be done
indoors, work in a well ventilated room; make sure ventilating
equipment is operating; No smoking; No exposed heaters, flames,
or arc-producing equipment should be used in the area while the gas
is being handled;
If-when handling used SF6 gas, odour of rotten eggs is detected,
personnel not wearing respiratory equipment should promptly
evacuate the area; Correct any gas leaks at hose or filling connection
at the breaker, on the service cart, or at the cylinder.
Storing SF6 Gas Cylinders Pressurised cylinders,
which contain SF6 gas, can be damaged or
ruptured by careless handling. Requirements
for storing gas cylinders include: Store
cylinders in a well-ventilated area; Secure the
cylinders in a way to prevent them from falling
or being knocked over.
 Heating an SF6 Gas Cylinder When filling during cold ambient
temperatures, the cylinder may be heated any of the following
methods to convert the liquid SF6 in the cylinder to a gaseous
state: An electric blanket heater; Immersing the gas cylinder
upright in a drum partially filled with warm water so that
approximately half of the cylinder is immersed. Heat the water
with a portable gas or electric heater.
Never heat a gas cylinder with an open flame. Energise heaters
only when transferring the gas. When handling the cylinder, be
sure that the temperature in the cylinder does not exceed
100F (38C).
Removing SF6 Gas Residue from Tools
and Equipment
To clean tools and equipment that have been exposed to SF6
decomposition products:
1. Prepare a mild (10%) lime or soda ash solution and use this
as the neutralizing solution.
2.Wash any hand tools, non-disposable protective gear, and
equipment employed in the cleanup operation.
3. Vacuum some of this neutralising solution through the hose
and into the vacuum cleaner to neutralise particles adhering to
this equipment.
4. Rinse all washed tools and equipment thoroughly with water.
5. Wash the rubber boots and Neoprene gloves in water.
