The success of the internal combustion engine dates from 1876, when Nikolaus August Otto was looking for a
powerful engine which had potential for further development. The engine he devised was to become the basis for
a whole raft of developments continuing until the present day. Thanks to its tremendous potential, the four-stroke
engine mobilised industry as a whole, leading to huge amounts of competition, which the development of the
internal combustion engine continues to drive till this day. The result was the most powerful types of engine in
existence. Much time has been invested, particularly with regards to air-fuel mix and ignition. The early
mechanical systems developments have now led to the directly injected high-performance engines of today with
their electronic ignition and electronic control of fuel mix.

Thanks to the software which also functions as the interface between the user and the engine, you can view all
of the important information and subsequently edit it for the desired engine characteristics map. The
characteristics map can be displayed graphically to simplify and boost understanding.

The engine test bed allows for a vast selection of tests on engines.
The system includes a dynamometer with a control and
instrumentation panel. The system is supplied with manual, which
describe all parts of the trainer, the installation and utilization
procedures, as well as many exercises with the relative results.

This training system allows for knowledge and skills to be put to use
on practical equipment. The petrol engine is equipped with authentic
vehicle sensors and actuators, and includes among other things
petrol injection and lambda air control. It is possible to alter all
relevant parameters to any value while the engine is in operation
using the supplied software. By this means it is possible to
investigate and measure the effects of various timing aspects on the
running of the engine. It is possible to alter the response of the
control system for fuel injection, idling and ignition using the relevant
fields in the software. All the parameters made available can be
edited as required while the engine is running, and the effect on the
running of the engine can be seen immediately.

Engine

Fully functional four-stroke engine with electronic injection

All sensors and actuators are fully functional and accessible during
operation via 4mm safety sockets

The tank unit, including filter and pump, is fitted directly to the engine

The engine has a dynamometer which is controlled via the central


control unit

required for the ignition system being used.

By means of the engine electronic control unit (ECU), it is possible to

All measured data are automatically acquired and processed by a


PC (not supplied along with the test bed) using an appropriate
software allowing to display or print the diagrams of the acquired
data as a function of time and the diagrams required in the
exercises

2 CONNECT Tuning and measurement software(D,GB,NL,F) SO2000-9A 1

The Motronic tuning software compiles all of the sensor and actuator
data from the four-stroke engine via the RS 232 interface of the
universal control unit. Current measurement data are displayed on
the screen. All characteristic maps are displayed separately and are
often accessible for processing during ongoing operation. The
software runs under Window 95/98/ME and exists in the languages
D, GB, NL, F. Operation is by means of keyboard and mouse.
