helping her students succeed is
obvious. This drive has earned
Ms. Colinco the Claremont

Teacher of the Year accolade.
I was very honored to receive this
award, and it was also very humbling,
Ms. Colinco said. I work with amazing
people, and both of my children went
through the Claremont schools, so I
know the caliber of teachers out there.
As is tradition for the Teacher of the
Year award, Ms. Colincos colleagues
lured her to the meeting using a complex
ruse.
A longtime attendance clerk was
supposedly getting an award, Ms. Col-

her after the school board meeting. I got
her flowers, and was cutting up brown-

The dedication Ms. Colinco showed
to her colleague is amplified in her inter-
actions with her students. While Ms.

My first great class was here in Claremont, upstairs in all the senses, especially touch and sight. On one of my Sas herself was always playing with new ideas and en-
thusiastically passing them on to her students. I always re-
turned home excited and renewed and ready to expand in
my craft. Those were good years.
For nine years I spent summers on the island of Sky-
ros in Greece. It was here that The Skyros Center, one of
the first personal development centers, was opened.
They held wonderful classes in movement and dance, yoga
and meditation, voice and drama, and writing and com-
munication. There were two settings, one small center in
town and the other at the larger more rustic center in the
countryside.
I typically spent two weeks each year indulging my-
self in personal growth, working with talented people (most-
ly British) and being among interesting people from all
over the world. It was here that I met Allegra Taylor, who
guided me and so many other students in writing. She is
an accomplished author and her classes were rich and in-
formal places to write and share experiences with gentle
guidance, while presenting stimulating prompts to begin
each writing session.
Sometimes we gathered at the local taverna to work to-
gether but mostly we sat on rocks at the edge of the sea
and, with our notebooks on our knees, wrote, shared, lis-
tened and grew. Allegra was a gentle but firm guide work-
ing in an area that is both very personal and often emo-
tional. It was through working with her and sharing with
others over many years that I was able to find a love of
expressing myself through the written word.
A number of years ago my friend Amy and I went to
a one-week art class in Riverside. The instructor was Ron
Pokrasso, a printer from Santa Fe. Working with art on pa-
per, like painting, drawing, printing and collaging, has al-
ways been a challenge for me, even though I began my
artistic pursuits as a child with pencil and paper. I loved
that first class. We learned to use inks and a press and many
techniques to build a detailed and rich picture by layer-
ing and adding papers, words, color and linear design. He
was first and foremost a good artist and generously shared
his knowledge of the various techniques to achieve desired
results. His classes were always full and, even though we
were in the same class watching the same demonstrations,
each of us produced independent and original work. He
taught us well.
I went up to Idyllwild to take summer classes and to New
Mexico to work with Ron. My only regret is that I dont
have the space or tools to continue this craft on my own.
Sadly, his classes are given so far from my home.
I have been very lucky to have worked with talented
people over the years. Each has been a good leader. For
me, working with someone is a delicate balance between
trust, letting go of the negatives that often impede my
progress and listening to what is offered. Finally, I have
to trust in my own voice. But working with strong, talented
teachers has given me the chance to move forward with
confidence.

ly move on the California State meet, in addition to any-
one who hits a set qualifying mark, either a certain height
in the jumping events or a set time in a race.
The watch and the tape dont lie, Coach Amarasekara
said. We have to be in the top 12 to move on.
Claremont should do very well with Bishop, the cur-
rent state cross country champion, as well as with Boos
and Renken, who hold several CHS records. A strong show-
ing at the state meet would be the crowning achievement
for an already storied season.
Graduation will leave a bit of a vacuum at the top, as
Boos, Renken and Bishop will be moving on. However,
this years junior varsity squad was one of the best in the
Southern Section, so Claremont should be a top competitor
come next year.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
CHS boys volleyballs somewhat unexpected but
nonetheless very successful season, came to an end last
Thursday when the Pack lost at home to Channel Islands,
3-0, in the second round of the CIF playoff tournament.
We started well and were up 15-8 in the first set, Coach
Bernie Wendling said. We made a few mistakes, and
Channel Islands got their confidence. They [Channel Is-
lands] had great ball control and played together well. We
struggled connecting with our middles a little, which we
need for our offense to run well. Still, the Wolfpack bat-
tled to the end.
Until Thursday, CHS had not lost a match since
March 30, even though the boys were pushed to five sets
several times.
They just refused to lose, they found ways to win in-
stead, Coach Wendling said. They really learned to care
about each other and to not be jealous of a teammate, even
if that meant someone might be playing instead of them.
The teams success belonged to everyone. I am so proud
of them.
It was a great season for Claremont, winning league
again after a four-year respite and adding to their legacy
of eight league championships in 12 seasons. The Pack
is definitely back.
[Its] a total tribute to the quality of athletes in this com-
munity, not to mention some tall parents, and the support
of mens volleyball by administration, staff and students,
Coach Wendling said.
Claremont ends with a record of 15-12 overall and 6-
2 in league, and will undoubtedly be looking forward to
the 2018 season. Steven Felschundneff
