LETTER OF TRANSMITTAL
DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE,
BUREAU OF THE CENSUS,
Washington, D. C., March 16, 1942.
SIR: I have the honor to submit herewith for publication the sixty-
third issue of the Statistical Abstract of the United States. This
annual volume is a compilation of authoritative statistics relating
to the social and economic condition of the population and to the
industrial, commercial, and governmental activities of the Nation.
It is designed to serve as a convenient reference work for businessmen,
economists, statisticians, students, and others who may have need
of a statistical compendium covering a wide range of subjects.
The present volume was prepared in the Division of Statistical
Research of this Bureau, under the supervision of Kathleen H.
Dugan, editor, and under the administrative direction of Calvert
L. Dedrick, Chief Statistician for the Division.
The first 34 issues of the Abstract were prepared and published by
the Bureau of Statistics, originally a bureau of the Treasury Depart-
ment and later of the Department of Commerce and Labor; the next
25 by the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, Department of
Commerce; and subsequent issues by the Bureau of the Census.
The statistical tables contained in the Abstract are compilations of
data collected by the various statistical agencies of the Federal
Government, by several State agencies, and by a considerable number
of nongovernmental organizations. Many of these agencies have
rendered valuable assistance not only in supplying advance data but
also in the actual preparation of tables for inclusion in the Abstract.

BRIEF BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SOURCES OF STATISTICAL
DATA
The following bibliography is intended to furnish a guide to additional in-
formation, particularly to more detailed primary data, than is presented in the
Statistical Abstract. References to secondary sources of data are included
where primary sources are not readily available, and to one-time studies where
these present compilations or estimates for several years or new types of data
not available in regular reports.
Statistical data issued by the various States and the reports of municipal and
other local agencies are a valuable part of the literature but have been omitted
from this bibliography because of the limitation of space. For the same reason
many items have been omitted which cover a specialized subject, such as a single
commodity or a kind of business.
Major inquiries, such as the Census of Population, are referred to by name
rather than by specific volume references.
Subjects are arranged alphabetically but, for convenience, several are some-
times combined into one group. In such cases cross-references refer to the first
subject of the group. Within the subject groups, titles of publications are
arranged by the issuing agency or publisher. The designation "U. S." is placed
before the name of each Federal agency. Reference is usually made to the
Bureau, rather than to the Department responsible for the report. All of these
agencies are located in Washington.
