SYNOPSIS

India being a patriarchal society has been dominated by the men for
centuries now. Only back in the early Vedic era did the women have a
standing of their own, after which their status went on deteriorating.
Today when we claim to have risen above gender bias and are evolving
into an egalitarian society, there are still women not getting their fair
share in their own right. There is judgement around everything they
decide to be or do. And this judgement comes from not only men, but
women themselves too.

Through this study, our purpose is to determine, what really is the

status of women in their own eyes and what they think of women
empowerment and the effectiveness of the initiatives taken by the
government. We have tried to find answers to what are the reasons for
crime against women and how they should be handled. The
effectiveness and success of empowerment initiatives taken up by the
government have also been answered through this survey.

For this study we interviewed women of Mumbai through structured

questionnaires that required open ended answers. The kind of data
collected was qualitative in nature since the main idea was to gather
the views and opinions of the respondents. Our samples were across
age groups of NCCS A1++ of Mumbai contacted through our own
network.

We found that most women in this audience themselves feel a sense of

feminism, and are particular about gender equality. However, there is
yet a lot to be done for these feminist ideas to manifest in practices.

The urban women, particularly the younger girls, did not seem to know
much about the initiatives to develop the rural women. There was
mixed response about their effectiveness and the general consensus
was to further enhance these programs and extend their reach to the
grass root level to get the maximum benefit. The change in attitude of
women aver the generations got reinforced by our findings about the
youngsters being more independent and career driven while the older
women were independent, yet balanced work with a family oriented
approach.

Our recommendations are predominantly directed towards the

government to implement their initiatives more effectively and to
create buzz around these initiatives to gain public confidence. To
spread awareness about these initiatives is of utmost importance in
order to enable the less privileged to gain maximum benefit from
them.

Till individual members of the society, and the society as a holistic
body, does not accept the women as an equal counterpart of men,
there will always be friction between the genders and with the society.
