CNN-IBN, the Indian news (and
entertainment?) television channel,
seems to be recklessly behind Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to “expose”
it as a “terror” organization. Its
correspondent Bhupendra Chaubey
seem to be dead sure about RSS’s
involvement in “Mecca Masjid Blast Case”
(see “RSS under scanner for links to
Hindu terrorists“); just like those Islamic
clerics, Indian Muslim apologists as well
as Communists, who are desperate to
prove existence of a “Hindu Terrorism”.
Chubey “claims” that CBI has
“interrogated the RSS leaders”.
Interestingly the investigating agency
“disapproves” of it. So what’s the basis
for these claims? “We have access to
investigation reports.” suggests Chubey.
Yawn! This is boring – to say the least. An

Anti-Hindu drive is once again on the
rise as is volubly seen across media
spectrum and it is an open secret that
this has the blessings of the Sonia Gandhi
ruled Congress-led UPA government.
However, it is important that the UPA
government and its friendly media
understand that it is not the Hindus that
are the problem but the two aggressive
neighbors - China and Pakistan are, and
therefore, they need to work jointly to raise

Yes, currently the Bhartiya Janata

on the priorities like elections in Bihar
this year, followed by the ones to be held
in West Bengal, Assam and Tamil Nadu
next year. But politicians are politicians
and with the friendly press on their side,
the UPA government does not want to let
BJP to strengthen its roots in the states it
rules (Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka and
its latest attempts in the Uttar Pradesh).
So, almost like a political Mafioso and
tactics, the UPA government uses its
powers to browbeat the party from all
possible quarters and thereby create anti-
Hindu atmosphere across the country.
The recent crisis in Karnataka - ruled
by BJP - is said to be the indirect 'creation'
by the state's governor H R Bhardwaj,
former law minister (under UPA
government) and a veteran Congress
leader. The BJP spokesperson Nirmala
Seetharam told reporters in Chennai that
"The Governor is the problem". For various
reasons, HR Bhardwaj is charged with
'excessive interference' in the administrative
affairs in the state, and BJP pinned him as
the 'problem' for putting the state and the
ruling BJP in news for 'all wrong reasons'.
He has also appraised President Pratibha
Patil about the 'crisis' in Karnataka State.
For obvious reasons, the media
spectrum is too happy to highlight the
'developments' in Karnataka State.
A lot of noise is being made about
the recent attack on news channel for its
sting operation on one of the leaders of
RSS group. The latest case is that of a
mob attacking on July 16, the Delhi office
of TV Today Network whose Headlines
Today channel that had on June 1 carried
out a sting operation and had aired the
contents (on July 16) of tapes of the
operation showing the secret meetings
of RSS leader Indresh Kumar who is
shown as discussing the need for
carrying out terrorist attacks in the country.

described as “misleading” reports in a
section of the media that some members

abysmal track record at ensuring basic
levels of nutrition is the greatest
contributor to its poverty as measured by
the new international Multi-dimensional
Poverty Index (MPI). About 645 million
people or 55% of India's population is
poor as measured by this composite
indicator made up of ten markers of
education, health and standard of living
achievement levels.

and Human Development Initiative
(OPHI) for the United Nations
Development Programmes (UNDP)
forthcoming 2010 Human Development
Report, the MPI attempts to capture more
than just income poverty at the household
level. It is composed of ten indicators:
years of schooling and child enrollment
(education); child mortality and nutrition
(health); and electricity, flooring, drinking

20%. The MPI measures both the
incidence of poverty and its intensity. A
person is defined as poor if he or she is
deprived on at least 3 of the 10 indicators.
By this definition, 55% of India was poor,
close to double India's much-criticised
official poverty figure of 29%. Almost 20%
of Indians are deprived on 6 of the 10
indicators.

Congress-1948 : The Sangh enjoyed very
popularity due to the extensive service to
Hindus that it rendered durign the
partition. Pt. Nehru perceived the Sangh
as a potential political threat, and under
the influence of the Left parties was
always on the look out for an opportunity
to crush the RSS.
So much so that on January 29,
1948, that is just a day before the murder
of the Mahatma, he thundered in Amritsar
that he would see that the RSS is totally
uprooted from the face of India. The
assasination of Gandhiji gave him an
opportunity to implicate the RSS and he
did it. However, the Sangh was honourably
acquitted by the Courts after fighting the
case for more than 18 months during
which time thousands of innocents were
tortured by the Congress governments.
Inspite of this, the Congress
leaders and the English media
continues to spread the propaganda that
Godse killed Gandhi on the behest of the
RSS. Once Prof.Rajendra Singh (4th
Sarsanghchalak of RSS) remarked
during an interview, “Godse worked in the
Congress for many years. Can we then
say that he was motivated by the
Congress to kill Gandhiji because of his
association with Congress.”
The RSS was once again banned
in 1975 by Pt.Nehru’s daughter,
Smt.Indira Gandhi during the “infamous”
Emergency. The rest is history. More than
80000 sangh swayamsevaks filled the
jails and launched a never before seen
satyagraha against Emergency under
the leadership of Loknayak Jayaprakash
Narayan. The Congress government
was forced to uplift the ban.
It must be noted that in the history
of Independent India, this was the only
time when the Free will of the people was
suppressed and yet the Congress calls
the BJP-RSS as fascist. It is the
Congress which has always sought to
implement facisit methods to suppress
contradictory voice to its own.
The Third ban on Sangh by the
Congress was in 1992 during the
Ramajanmabhumi movement when
once again the Congress’s anti-Hindu
nature came up to the forefront.

overwhelmingly the largest factor in
overall poverty, unsurprising given that
half of all children in India are under-
nourished according to the National
Family Health Survey III (2005-06). Close
to 40% of those who are defined as poor
are also nutritionally deprived. In fact, the
contribution of nutrition to the overall MPI
is even greater in urban than rural India.
A comparison of the state of Madhya
Pradesh and the sub-Saharan nation of
the Democratic Republic of Congo
(DRC), which have close to the same
population and a similar MPI (0.389 and
0.393 respectively) , shows that
nutritional deprivation, arguably the most
fundamental part of poverty, in MP far
exceeds that in the DRC. Nutritional
deprivation contributes to almost 20% of
MP's MPI and only 5% of the DRC's MPI.
MP's drinking water, electricity and child
mortality levels are better than that of the
DRC.
Multi-dimensional poverty is highest
(81.4% poor) among Scheduled Tribes
within India's Hindu population, followed
by Scheduled Castes (65.8%), Other

forces have unleashed propaganda with
terms like RSS terror and Hindu terror.
They believe that by this, the discussion
on Islamic terror will be muted and win
the Muslim votes. They would also be
able to alieniate a big section of Hindus
away from the RSS.
The General Secretary of the RSS,
Sri Suresh (Bhayyaji) Joshi had issued a
clear statement that the RSS opposses
terror and terrorists. He insisted that RSS
only believed in the Constitutional path. The
RSS would not support or protect anyone
indulging in violent activities. The RSS
believes in resolving matters by increasing
public awareness. He has also indicated
that the RSS is willing to co-operate in any
investigation if it involves solving the cases
of the bomb blasts but asserted that
innocent Hindus should not be harassed.
But, this aspect is coolly ignored by
the Media. Sri Ram Madhavji also clarified
that Sri Devender Gupta was a Vibhag
Pracharak in the RSS but moved on from
the RSS. Why then is media going
overboard on the involvement of one
person in an alleged terror attack in an
organisation in which more than 5-6 Lacs
people come together in the shakas every
day? If bomb blasts was on the agenda of
the RSS, even a dimwit could imagine what
the situation in India would have been!
Indians who once believed the
media to be the weapon of justice are
seeing through the games that these
media houses are nothing but business
houses who are out to earn some fast
TRP ratings.
Meanwhile the media continues to
attempt to entertain the audience by their
Breaking News once again.
There was a section in the
Congress in 1948 that saw through this
game of the leftists. Sardar Patel
represented this section. On January 7,
1948, in a speech in Lucknow (U.P.) he
said, “In the Congress those who are in
power feel that by virtue of their authority
they will be able to crush the RSS. But
you cannot crush an organisation by
using the danda. The danda is meant for
the thieves and dacoits. After all, the RSS
men are not thieves and dacoits. They
are patriots who love their country.”
The time has arrived once again for
leaders from various fronts to put an end
to this Hindu bashing.

between the poverty incidence in various
states as per the MPI and as per the Indian
Planning Commission's official figures.
Based on the MPI, Bihar has by far the
most poor of any state in the country, with
81.4% of its population defined as poor,
which is close to 12% more than the next
worst state of Uttar Pradesh.
As per the Planning Commission's
figures, 41.4% of Bihar and 32.8% of UP
is poor. In a possible indication of
inadequate access to health and
education facilities which do not show
up in income poverty, almost 60% of
north-east India and close to 50% of
Jammu & Kashmir are poor as per the
MPI, while the Planning Commission
figures are around 16% and 5%
respectively.
The findings would provide further
ballast to the argument of some
economists that India's official poverty
estimation methods are too narrowly
focused to capture the real extent of
deprivation in the country.

and BJP affiliated members had entered
the office of Headlines Today and other
unidentified persons had joined the
group, which the former say would be
unrelated to us and they all had
ransacked the Headlines Today office.
Police said it has detained 30 people who
are suspected to be members of RSS
and investigations are on.
WHAT SAFFRON PARTY? - Even as
the Congress and its allies are increasingly
befriending with the Muslims, for the vote
bank politics, they do not have the courage
and inclination too to either call the Muslims
as 'Green Brigade' or 'Green Party' or their
increasing terrorist-supportive activities as
'Green Terror'. Neither do the government-
friendly media dare to call them 'Green' even
when Green is the popular color of the
Muslims and they blatantly, illegally, and
proudly display their green flags in their
communities as a sign of their supremacy
in that region that is almost like an island
among other communities.
However, the members of both the
RSS and the BJP with Hindu philosophy
are tarnished with the word 'saffron' -
saffron brigade, saffron party, saffron
activists, saffron terror, etc. Writing about
the above news, the Hindustan Times
report (dt July 17) said 'Saffron Rage -
RSS men attack TV channel'. In another
instance, the Times of India's PTI report
(dt July 19) said 'The saffron party for BJP'.
Karnataka is ruled by BJP which is
disturbing Congress party and its
members. And the media is helping to
spread this word. In one of its reports,
India Tribune has said 'RSS sends SOS
to BJP on 'saffron terror'.’
For more than three days, the TV
media have been repeatedly flashing the
news of mob attack on TV office. On
Sunday evening, Aaj Tak TV channel of
TV Today took up this issue to be
discussed among its editor Prabhu
Chawla and the members of the BJP and
Congress. As has been the practice of
the TV media as a whole, and in this case
of TV Today and Aaj Tak in particular, the
members of BJP were simply not allowed
to present their case and objection. Even
if they could get their view across, the
troublesome 'saffron' tag and the
misconceptions that go with it cannot be
simply removed from public psyche.

Why? When the RSS was started it
did had a rebellious and revolutionary
tendencies like that of Bhagath Singh and
Chandra Shekhar azad. They didn’t really
follow Gandhi during their formative years.
But as the time passed they realized that
they won’t stand a chance if they sought
to violence. This is because Indian’s,
specifically Hindus, are mostly “peace
loving”. Besides, after the founding of Jana
Sangh, now BJP, RSS has realized the
benefits of “remote controlling”. If you
observe, in any Indian state where BJP is

"saffron terrorism" and asked why it has
been brought up time and again. Well,

time again to such hooliganism. It is
important that the BJP respect and follow

On his part, Abhishek Singhvi a

"the culprits will be punished severely".
This went on for almost 30 minutes
and the program was over without any
conclusion.
WARNING WRIT LARGE - Yes, as in
any political party including BJP, there would
be some elements which are troublesome
and "loony" too. While it is important that
these elements are removed from the
parties at the earliest, it is important for both
the UPA government and its friendly media
too to read the warning signals writ
large over the global political arena
where intense efforts are being worked
out to keep India pinned down from its
inevitable rise on the global economy,
challenging both USA and China.
On its part, USA is openly and
blatantly playing a double game of being
a friend to India but is wholesomely
supporting and giving financial aid to
Pakistan which it has and will use it
against destabilizing and terrorist
supporting activities across its borders,
more so in Jammu and Kashmir.
The failure of the latest round of yet
another round of diplomatic talks between
India's foreign minister SM Krishna and
his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood
Qureshi is yet another distressing signal
of the looming challenge from Pakistan.
No wonder, US Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton is currently on a 2-day visit to
Pakistan to buttress a shaky partnership
with Pakistan… and reports inform the
visit will include talks with top military and
civilian leaders as well as pledges of
economic aid.
China is known to be an aggressive
neighbor who wants to increasingly eat
into India's north eastern borders. An SMS
being circulated warns of an impending
war against India by both Pakistan and
China - either independently and or jointly.
The political parties and the
supposedly unbiased and socially
aware, opinion building and wanting
freedom of expression all the time, the
media too should work independently
and collectively to raise the overall
awareness against the impending
challenges - both internal and external
and strengthen and unite the peoples of
the country India as a whole.

bureaucratic and its leadership has
serious problem understanding anything
other than politics. They have stuck their
heads into the past and have lost their
foresight to look into the future.

Kalam's 'thinking hut' Bihar court summons

"thinking hut" in Rashtrapati Bhavan's
Mughal Gardens has been removed as
work begins to restore the original
character of Edwin Lutyens' best-known
architectural creation.
The Manipuri style hut was installed
during Kalam's tenure and the former
president used to sit there in the
mornings and evenings. He fondly
referred to it as his "thinking hut" and told
visitors that two of his books were written
on its sofas.
While the hut made Kalam's
creative juices flow, a committee of
experts appointed for the restoration
project has deemed it an eyesore in a
garden designed by Lutyens as a unique
mix of English and Mughal landscaping.
The committee has also suggested
that Kalam's other contribution to Mughal
Gardens a modern-day musical fountain
be demolished as this too defiles the
heritage character of Lutyens world
famous marvel.
The restoration of Rashtrapati
Bhavan is part of an ambitious project to
preserve the majestic buildings on
Raisina Hill that serve as iconic symbols
of independent India. Other buildings on
the conservation radar are Parliament
House and North and South Blocks.
Three different expert committees are
overseeing the restoration work but UPA
chairperson Sonia Gandhi is believed to
be taking keen interest in the project. She
was also the inspiration behind the first
heritage project, undertaken in 1985 when
Rajiv Gandhi was prime minister, in
which the Prime Minister's Office,
Hyderabad House and parts of
Rashtrapati Bhavan, notably Ashoka Hall,
were stripped of latter-day additions and
restored to their original glory.
Architect Charles Correa,
architectural restorer Sunita Kohli and
artist Satish Gujral are among the experts
whose advice and help have been
sought for the project. The government
will have to source the original drawings
of Lutyens and Herbert Baker (who
designed Parliament House and North
and South Blocks) from London for the
finer nuances and details of the interiors.

court on Saturday summoned Congress
president Sonia Gandhi to appear before
it on July 29 in connection with a complaint
alleging that her depiction in posters in
Uttar Pradesh in 2007 as Goddess Durga
was an "insult to Hindu religion".

conditions. Therefore everybody is trying
their best to uplift the Indian poor. People
adopted the non-profit making NGO
routes for this cause.
Nowadays all are staring NGO’s,
trying to get donations, applying for
Income Tax exemptions for getting
donations. According to these NGOs they
are for the service of Indian poor. But
Committee (UPCC) president Rita
Bahuguna and the party's Muradabad
district president to appear before the
court the same day in the case.
Ojha in his petition alleged that a
photograph had appeared in the
Muzaffarpur edition of a Hindi daily on
June 21, 2007 of the Congress president
allegedly depicted as Goddess Durga
which was "an insult to Hindu religion
and the Hindu community."
The picture was also displayed in
the office of the Muradabad Congress.
Ojha alleged that Gandhi and others
had connived to have the picture
displayed "to insult the religion of the
Hindu community".
According to a recent press report,
in India, for every 400 Indians there is
one NGO. According to statistics
available as on 31.12.2009, there are 3.3
Million NGOs for a population of 1120
million Indian population.
Despite the fact that these NGOs
collects and spends 40,000 to 80,000
crores annually for the welfare of poor,
30% of Indian remains poor. This clearly
shows that even though these NGOs are
registered as non-profit making

Army boosts its defences

New Delhi, July 18, 2010 : The Indian
Army is fighting attacks in the cyber world
with electronic warfare capability of the
"highest standard", say officials pointing
out that virtual strikes have shot up from
hostile quarters in both sophistication
and frequency.
"The army is cognisant of the threat
to its cyber space from various state and
non-state actors. But our network is well
secured in compliance with the highest
standards of cyber security," a senior
official in the military headquarters said
on condition of anonymity.
The official said the army has
established an "impenetrable and
secure wide area network exclusively for
its functioning ".
Officials in the 1.3 million force
privately admit they are facing "next
generation threats" and are rather
worried over the complex world of cyber
warfare amid reports of Chinese and
Pakistani spies targeting the Indian
military establishment via the internet.
Though attacks from hackers -
professional or amateur - can come from
anywhere in the world, cyber onslaughts
have been more frequent from China and
Pakistan, which have reportedly been
peeking into India's sensitive business,
diplomatic and strategic records.
As per reports from the cyber
industry, China and Pakistan hackers
steal nearly six million files worldwide
every day.
A report in the US-based Defence
Systems magazine found that there were
25 million new strains of malware
created in 2009. That equals a new strain
of malware every 0.79 seconds.
Howevever, the Indian army is
confident.
Revealing that secret information
had been secured with unhackable
electronic passwords, the official said
various "cryptographic controls" have
been incorporated in the wake of a
significant number of viruses, worms and
other forms of malware.
To address cyber defence, which is
also under threat from terrorist outfits that
have their own trained recruits, officials
said the army frequently upgrades its
comprehensive cyber security policy to
pro-actively deal with and anticipate these
threats.
The force has established the
Computer Emergency Response Team
(CERT) to respond to attacks targeting
the army's critical systems and
infrastructure.
Another official said the army has
its own cyber audit process conducted
by cyber security personnel.
"The audit is conducted in
accordance with established security
standards such as ISO 27001. Audit of
the network is a continuous and active
process which helps identification and
mitigation of vulnerabilities in a network
to counter latest threats as also check
the network for cyber security policy
compliance," he said.

issuance of a spate of “fatwas” (religious
decrees) on women’s issues, the
Deoband-based Islamic seminary Darul
Uloom has issued a new decree
banning cycling by Muslim girls above
13 years.
The fatwa, issued in response to a
query, says that Muslim girls above the
age of 13 should not ride cycles as it then
becomes difficult for them to remain
under the veil.
Arshad Farroqui, chairman of the
seminary’s Darul Ifta (department of fatwa),
said it would not be possible for the girls to
wear “burqa” while they were cycling.

Gurucharan Das. It is needless to say
that it is an excellent rendering of the
Indian scenario particularly after the 1991
economic reforms, introduced by the then
prime minister Sri. P. V. Narasimha Rao.
It Is also known that the present prime
minister Mr Manmohan Singh played a
vital role in bringing these reforms as the
finance minister in sri Rao’s cabinet. Sri
Gurucharan Das with his Harvard
academic background and experience in
multinationals like M/s proctor and
gamble has picturised the economic
scenario and the progress that followed
through service sectors etc,. The best
testimony for his work I see, is from no
less a person than Sri.N.R Narayanamurty,
the founder and the architect of Infosys I.T.
business corporation.
The perception: Though I have all
the appreciation for this informative,
thought provoking and scholarly work, that
looks like a thesis, I beg to differ his
expressed thoughts on swadeshi in
Chapter twenty titled modern vs western

alien to me since I retired as a professor of
Chemistry, but yet I have my own perception

Swadeshi and inferiority complex:

that swadeshi brings in inferiority
complex and the seventh was that smart
governments ignore swadeshi lobbies.

limit the import of Japanese cars.
Ultimately U.S. Auto Industry could gear
up and survive the competition. It is
justified as far as corporate world is
concerned, that too in a U.S. like

However it is good that the Indian

Ambanis etc are excelling well on the

company car, why can’t we promote an
Indian company that draws and spends
all the money in this country. It is simple
economics, I am sure we cannot say
anything about the money flow channels
of a foreign company. This forms
altogether another subject for discussion.
Simple common sense proves this to be
a swadeshi approach but quite often than
not the common sense is a rare sense
more so in the corporate world.
Addressing the contention of Sri
GurucharanDas that swadeshi reflects
inferiority complex I would like to ask, how
inferior and what kind of inferiority
complex was observed in the approach
of Swadeshi Of Gandhiji. Gandhiji once
said “ swadeshi is not vindictive but it is
a national necessity”. In fact the
movement partly affected the British
economy, more than that it could instill a
kind of self respect among the masses
of India. May be the concept is much
more relevant now, to run our economy
by our elected government without
mortgaging the national interests. This

demands dignity, a firm will and self
respect from the administrators and the
political leadership.
One requires, a nobler and ripe
thinking to appreciate this statement and
also a kind of preparation to forego
certain unnecessary material

launch of Cartosat-2B by the Indian
Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on
Monday, India has reached a 'crit-ical
constellation' of ten active remote
sensing satellites in space, which gives
it a clear edge in the region for monitoring
borders and movements across them.
A combination of four Cartosats (I, 2,
2A and 2B) hovering 630 km above earth
allows India to keep areas under close and
prolonged surveillance. Multiple satellites
ensure that a particular geographical area
can be 'revisited' every 48 hours.
Three of the cartosats now in orbit
have a spatial resolu-tion of less than one
metre (0.8 m for Cartosat-2B), which means
that they can observe and photograph
objects smaller than a car. Cartosat-2B's
steerability of 26 degrees al-lows it to stay
focused on the object for a longer duration
while on the move as compared to the other
remote sensing satellites, which have a
range of applications.
Asked specifically about Cartosat-
2B's applications in surveillance at the
press conference after Monday's launch,
Isro chairman K Radhakrishnan said:
"Depend-ing on the user's imagination,
it can be used for surveillance and
intelligence (gathering)."

1, an all-weather satellite which uses a
synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and
multiple antennas to see through clouds
and darkness, when the 2008 Mumbai

Chattisgarh and moving to safer places
like Kolkata. Is it not a shame on the

and have now started sending them to
Australia and UK for advanced training.
Of what use is this to the common
man if these officers are fleeing from their
duty and leaving the Jawans to fend for
themselves. Reports also speak of rift
between IPS and non-IPS officers and
between IPS officers of Chattisgarh and
CRPF IPS officers ! What a pathetic state
of affairs ! Before fighting the Naxalites it
appears that law and order has to be
restored among senior police officers !
Mr.Chidambaram will have to sort out this
mess and inter service rivalry also apart
from other pressing menaces like the
Maoist problem.
The problem in India is that there is
a surplus of officers and that is why they
are squabbling among themselves. How
can such officers motivate their
subordinates? The Government has to

academician Gita Gopinath has been
named professor of economics at the
prestigious Harvard University, becoming
the first Indian-origin woman professor
in the institution' s history.
Gopinath, 38, has been a member
of the Harvard faculty since 2005 and was
named associate professor in 2009. Her
focus area is business cycles in
emerging markets and price fluctuations
across international borders.

July 15, 2010: Finally, the Rupee has
a symbol like other major global
currencies!
In a historic event, a five-member
jury set up to finalise symbol for the rupee
selected the design presented by IIT-ian
D Udaya Kumar.
The Union Cabinet approved the
symbol on Thursday noon. The Indian
rupee is now the fifth currency in the world
to have a distinct identity. The rupee will
join the elite club of US dollar, British
pound-sterling, Euro and
Japanese yen to have its
own symbol.
Speaking to
rediff.com on Thursday, a
proud D Udaya Kumar said:
"My design is based on the
Tricolour, with two lines at
the top and white space in
between. I wanted the
symbol for the Rupee to
represent the Indian flag. It
is a perfect blend of Indian
and Roman letters: a capital 'R', and
Devanagari 'ra', which represent rupiya,
to appeal to international and Indian
audiences."
"I worked on it for few months and
made numerous designs. Finally, I
shortlisted 8 to 10 designs and then
refined them further till I got this one," he
said.
"I will be joining the design
department at IIT-Guwahati on Friday, and
am overwhelmed by the response so far.
My phone has not stopped ringing since
morning," he added.

prevails in eight Indian states, including
Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal,
together accounting for more poor
people than in the 26 poorest African
nations combined, a new 'multidimensional'
measure of global poverty has said.
The new measure, called the
Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI),
was developed and applied by the Oxford
Poverty and Human Development
Initiative with UNDP support.
It will be featured in the forthcoming
20th anniversary edition of the UNDP
Human Development Report.
An analysis by MPI creators reveals
that there are more 'MPI poor' people in eight
Indian states (421 million in Bihar,
Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh,
Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and West
Bengal) than in the 26 poorest African
countries combined (410 million).
The new poverty measure that
gives a multidimensional picture of
people living in poverty, and is expected
to help target development resources
more effectively, its creators said.
The MPI supplants the Human
Poverty Index, which had been included
in the annual Human Development
Reports since 1997.
The 2010 UNDP Human
Development Report will be published
in late October, but research findings
from the Multidimensional Poverty Index
were made available today at a policy
forum in London and on line on the
websites of OPHI and the UNDP Human
Development Report.

is now being considered by Chile and
Colombia.
"The MPI is like a high resolution
lens which reveals a vivid spectrum of
challenges facing the poorest households,"
said OPHI Director Dr Sabina Alkire, who
created the MPI with Professor James
Foster of George Washington University
and Maria Emma Santos of OPHI.
The UNDP Human Development
Report Office is also joining forces with
OPHI to promote international
discussions on the practical applicability
of this multidimensional approach to
measuring poverty.
