Poster Activity

Overview
In this group activity students will create a poster presentation that represents what it
means to Act like a Man and Be ladylike (MediaSmart). The group of students will
brainstorm from their prior knowledge of the meaning of these stereotypes statements.
Then to gain more ideas the groups will research through the internet these
stereotypes statements. Then the group will create a poster through the software
Power Point and answer the discussion questions.

Learning Outcomes
The students will

As a group identify common male and female stereotypes statements. This is achieved
through active and constructive learning tasks, where prior knowledge has influenced
their understanding of these stereotypes.
Gain understanding of the impact multiple media sources have on gender stereotyping
in modern society. This is achieved through intentional learning tasks where the goal
is to identify ingrained gender differences.
As a group identify different gender stereotyping views and how others within the group
are affected by these different views. This is achieved through authentic and
cooperative learning tasks, where students evaluate their existing views from their
environment.

Preparation and Materials


Each group will need access to the internet
Each group will engage in the activity via access to the PowerPoint software
Each group will need access to the discussion questions through a Word document

The Lesson
Groups will identify and discuss common quotations on the stereotypes statements
through creating a brainstorm in a Word document.
Then groups will expand their main ideas to their brainstorm through researching these
stereotypes statements on the internet.

Groups will engage in creating a poster through the PowerPoint software that displays
the groups main ideas.
Then two groups will join and answer the discussion questions.

Discussion Questions
What gender characteristics doesnt fit into your groups stereotypes? For example,
Act like a man that represents a man who is sensitive.
Why arent these characteristics apart of acting like a man?
Where did your collaborative beliefs of these stereotypes come from?
Does your group feel that these characteristics are portrayed more in your everyday
environment or only within multimedia?
Has this task changed your groups view on the norm of what it means to Act like a
Man and Be ladylike?
It is possible for specified gender characteristics to change roles. For example, a
female to be a contractor showing the strength characteristic.
