LIGHT SOURCE ECONOMICS

While the economics o{ no two given llghting installations will be exactly the same due to the many variables (mounting helghts,
power rates, hours of use, footcandle Jeve s, etc.) involved, there are certain economlc gLridellnes that hold true for the maiority
of applications.
It is generally best to use the largest availab e wattage lamp for a given light source based upon acceptable lighting practices con-
cerning vlsua comfort.

High Pressure Sodium wi L usually provide the most economical lighting system based upon total ownir-rg and operatlon cost over
a period o{ time.

[,4etal Halide is the next most economical sVstem followed by Flourescent, and Mercury.

Based upon lnitial investrnent, F oLrrescent sources are the least costly, followed by lvletal Halide, High Pressure Sodium, and
Mercury respectively.

As previously stated the economics of a lighting system can vary from situatlon to situatlon. Hi-Tek has available computerized
Frxture Layout and Economlc Analysis (F.L.E.A.) which carl be used to provide more detailed economic data for a given liqht
ing applicatlon. Contact your local Lithonia/Hi Tek Representative lf you should wish to use th s service.

I.E.S. RECOMMENDED LEVELS

FOR VAR IOUS APPLICATIONS
The following are recommended l.E.S. lighting levels which represent the minimum advisable average maintained lootcandles
for a particular task.Operation depreciates the light output of any lum inaire; therefore, you should make your selection of the
lighting installation and luminaire on the basis of the minimum maintained liqht levels rather than on initial values. 0

GENERAL OUTDOOR LIGHTING
APPLICATION GUID ELIN ES
Despite the many varied types of area light equipment there are a few general guidelines that are applicable
for good area lighting installations.
ILLUMINATION LEVELS
The l.E.S. light levels shown on page 24 are average maintained minimums. lt is sometimes clesirable to in-
crease these ialues for various reasons such as security, conflicting light. and architectural effect.
ECONOMICS
When selecting a light source for a given application certain general economic guidelines can be applied'. As

poies possible consistent with the given iob parameters to obtain the least expensive
High pr"rrur" Sodium will usually provide the most economical system based upon total owning and opera-
tirig cost. lvletal Halide, Mercury and lncandescent are next in order of system cost.
lf initial cost is of prime importance, Incandescent will usually be the choice followed by Metal Halide,
Mercury and High Pressure Sodium.
i5" of re limpinq and maintenance should be factored in when considering the economics o{ a given
"o.t
system.
UNIFORMITY AND AIMING
Unless there are special architectural considerations, good area lighting installations should provide uniform
lighting. For parking areas or other open areas a uniformity ratio (Average.to. Minimum) of 4 or 5 to 1 is
uiuuiiV" rutirtuitory. This type of uniiormity will usually be obtained if the following fixture spacing guide
lines are followed.

1. Spacing between luminaires should not be RECOMMENDED MOUNTING HEIGHTS

better the uniformity. Table I indicates mini-

horizontal and vertical lines. Example: Area

necessarily apply when poles are located in-

APPLICATION DATA
When arge areas are to be lighted, determine the average square spacing between luminaires for a given footcandle level by
)e following the steps listed below and the liqhting guidelines discussed earlier.
STEPS:
1. Deternrine light level from recommended {ootcandle levels found on page 24-
2. Locate desired footcandle value on the vertical Axis.
3. Extend a line horizonta ly until it intersects the desired ight soLrrce and wattage.
4. At the point of intersection exrend a vert c6 line down to the horizontal axis. Read the average square spacing.
5. The average spacing multiplied by itself will givethesq!ar footage each luminairewill cover to the given footcandle level.
6. Determine the tota number of luminaires required by dlviding the total area to be lighted by the sq!are footage per lum narre

OUICK CALCULATOR FOR OUTDOOR LIGHTING
The Ouick Calculators shown below can be used for most generalarea lighting applications. lt is assumed that the
efficiency
utilization can be expected lor all appllcations; all lamp maintenance factors are
of all luminaires are equal; the same beam
equal;and pole variations have no effect on the performance of the luminaire'
As a general guideline remember to use the largest wattage lamp and highest fixture mounting height possible for good uni- 6ti I
form lighting.

STEPS:
1 Determine the light level.
2. Locate the footcandte vatue on the vertical axisand extend a linetothe poinlwhere it intersects the watts/sq foot cLrrve
3. Determine the watls/sq. foot required by drawing a line vertical frorn the point of intersection to the horizontal axis
4. Muttipty the totat square footage of the area to be lighted by the watts/sq. foot value determined in Step 3 to obtain the
total number of watts required to illuminate the area
5. Divide the vatue obtained in Step 4 by the given lamp watts yo! wish to use to obtain the number of lunrinaires required-
6. Befertocenerat AreaLightinqAppticationGuidelinesonpages22and23lottecommendedspacinqandairninqinformation-

APPLICATION INFORMATION 4OO WATT OMNI-FLOOD
The 400 watt Omni,Flood is usually mounted between 25 and 40 feet when large areas are to be illuminated depending upon the
light source used and the illumination and uniformity requirements of the given application. As a general rule the twin beam Omni-
Fiood is used when uniformity is the prime consideration rather than the footcandle intensity. lf the footcandle intensitv is the
main criterion, then the rectangular beam Omni Flood would be selected. The twin beam Omni-Flood is usually the floodlight to
use when large vertical surface;are illuminated, such as a buildinq Jacade, unless the luminaires must be located too lar from the
rQ sur{ace to adhieve the required footcandle level. The rectangular beam luminaire will generally provide higher maximum candle
power and should therefore be used as the distance increases between the luminaire and the area to be lighted. The twin beam fix
ture has two points of equal maximum candlepower and the value of each will be less than the single maximum candlepower ob
tained with the rectanqular luminaire. Therefore, the footcandle level will be lower when the twin beam Omni Flood is used.

ELECTRICAL DATA
The ballast in an H-1,D, luminaire serves four basic functions: (1) lt matches the line voltage to the required lamp operatinq
voltage; (2) Limits the allowable lamp current since all H.l-D. lamps have a negative resistance; {3) Provides the required
open citcuit voltage to start the lamp and; (4) Regulates the input voltage to provide proper lamp lumen output.
Listed below is a summary of the various H.l.D, ballast types, The information included here is a general comparison of the
various ballasts. Check the detailed electrical data to detelmine the operating characteristics of the ballasts used in Hi-Tek
luminaires-

Hi-Tek has developed a unique computer program that will allow you to
select the best HID system for your application requirements. The program
develops a fixture layout for up to 8 alternative systems and then provides an
economic analysis based on your average maintained footcandle requirements.
This service is available "instantaneously" through Hi-Tek's direct on-line
CRT Terminal by contacting your local Lithonia Representative. An
application specialist will assist you in evaluating different HID systems over
the phone. Within 24 hours after you call, you will be mailed a complete
printout of the layout and economic analysis.

,, FOT CAL"
Where detailed point by point footcandle calculations are required for one or
many luminaires. Hi-Tek has "FOT CAL", a computer program that eliminates the
need for time consuming manual calculations.
The program takes the candle power distribution of a luminaire and will provide a
detarled 11 x 11 grid print out showing footcandle values at designated points.
For information on this service contact your local Lithonia/Hi-Tek representative.
