Title of the Lesson: Aztec Civilization GRAPES Poster

Summary: Students will take notes on a poster while they research geography,
religion, achievements, politics, economy, and society of the Aztec civilization
Grade Level: 7
Time Frame: 2 class blocks, testing schedule
Subject: World History - The Americas- Aztec Civilization
Objectives: Students will:
Research the Aztec Civilization in two textbooks, websites, and videos
in regards to geography, religion, achievements, politics, economy, and
society.
Collaborate and compare their research with their shoulder partner
Illustrate one important research finding for each category on their
poster
Share out their research to the class
Standards:
7.7.1. Study the locations, landforms, and climates of Mexico, Central America, and
South America and their effects on Mayan, Aztec, and Incan economies, trade, and
development of urban societies.
7.7.2. Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life,
warfare, religious beliefs and practices, and slavery.
7.7.5. Describe the Meso-American achievements in astronomy and mathematics,
including the development of the calendar and the Meso-American knowledge of
seasonal changes to the civilizations agricultural systems.

Sequence of Activities:
1. Warm up: Review Aztec BrainPop notes from yesterday and add them
to GRAPES poster (5 minutes)
2. Research: I will set the timer for 20 minutes per category. After the 20
minutes is up, I will choose a few students to present the most important
information they found.(20 minutes per category, 6 categories)
3. Illustration: After the student is done taking research notes, they will
illustrate an important fact they learned in the category. (5 minutes)
Accommodations, Adaptations, and Differentiated Instruction:
Text to speech available in the TeachTCI textbook
Comparing notes and clarifying questions with shoulder partner before
sharing out to the class
Use a timer to keep students on track
