Basic Understanding
Prepare the subject/topic keeping in mind that your
have to become a GENERALIST not a SPECIALIST.
Economics for UPSC requires basic understanding. It
does not expect you to have a PhD.
Its not academic study. Forget the definition.
Applied economics and not theoretical economics.
Observation from real life fetches good marks.
In short it is not at all difficult to prepare for civil
services exams as far as you love what you are doing.
Let us begin with a Can Do Attitude
Village in India
I am sure you have been to a village at least for a short
period.
Can you recollect a village memory?
One thing that you cant disagree with is that you would be
surrounded by lots of Farmland in the countryside.
You might have heard this statement too that real India
still lives in the villages.
Have you ever wondered what this statement is trying to
tell you?
The census of 2011 highlights that out of 83.3/121 crore
population live in village i.e. 70% population.
Facts: 14% contribution to the GDP and 50% plus
population dependent on agriculture.
Indian Scenario
Recently we have seen that new government of the
State of Uttar Pradesh has waived off farm loan.
This move has benefit nearly 93% of farmers of UP. By
the way there are total 23million farmers in UP.
This is not the first time that government has waived
off farm loans.
In the past too we have seen that different government
has waived off farm loans.
Out of the total cultivated area in the country a little
less than 40 percent is irrigated even today.
Indian Scenario
Now we know that in this era of climate change rainfall is
erratic.
We read in newspapers the effect of El Nino and other
weather phenomena on India.
Wellbeing of both farmers and farm labourers is closely
related to production on the farms.
One of the most basic constraint in raising farm production
is land.
As cultivable land is fixed and hardly wastelands are
converted into cultivable land.
In fact we are witnessing conversion of farmland into
commercial and residential property. Rest of the land is
dependent on rainfall.
Is there a way out?
Understanding of Geography of our country can help
us.
We have learnt that part of our country falls in torrid
zone and part is in temperate zone.
Predominantly climate of our country is defined as
Monsoon type.
We have different seasons that means we have
possibility of growing different crops.
Kharif season: Monsoon
Rabi: Winter
Zaid: Summer
Is there a way out?
Recently UP Government has decided to provide
electricity to all.
24 hours for district
20 hours for town
18 hours for villages
With electricity supply farmers can run tube wells and
with this they can irrigate much larger areas of land
more effectively.
