GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Low-brightness downlight which
utilizes efficient, longlife, coated Metal Halide lamps to provide a
medium, softdged beam. Alzak reflector minimizes aperture
brightness by distributing light uniformly within useful zones. Provides
45" visual cutoff to lamp and lamp image in reflector. Retaining
springs assure ease of installation, secure fixture to mounting ring.
Ballast-splice box assembly, supported by mounting frame, is isolated
trom fixture housing, which reduces ballast noise and prevents heat
build.up. Quick.release hooks permit assembly to be removed for
servicing.
*lncandescent units which match the aperture appearance of H.l.D.
units are available.
MECHANIGAL: Provided with (4) 16 ga. steel mounting brackets;
also suitable for use with standard 7." and 1%" lathing channels (by
others), or optional mounting bars, Cat. No. 1951 (27'J. complete
housing must be installed before ceiling is finished. Fixture should
be supported by main runner or purlin channel.
ELECTRICAL: Porcelain sockelmedium base hea\ry duty 4KV.
Nickel plated screw shell. Pre-wlred complete with leads to
4" x 3'/," x2" junclion box, 14 ga. steel. U.L- listed forthrough branch
circuit wiring with maxirnum of (8) No. 12,75'C supply conductors
(4 in4 out), or 60" conductors for end of run. Ballast: Thermally

Ballasts
All H.l.D lamps require a ballast to
provide the proper starting and
operating voltages for the lamp with
a few exceptions, ballasts must be
matched to a designated wattage and
H.l.D lamp type: metal halide, high
pressure sodium, or mercury
Lightoliels recessed H.l.D down-
lights are equipped with thermally
protected ballasts that are encased
and potted to improve heat dissipa-
tion and reduce ballast noise. Where
available, fixtures have 'dual tap'
ballasts that are suitable for use on
either 120V or 277V circuits.
Ballast Noise
The ballasts required for the operation
of H.l.D lamps poduce a low level
hum, which in some installations may
be objectionable The ballast noise
level in a given room is dependent on
the following factors:

Lightolieis recessed H.l.D downlights
have been tested by an independent
accustical laboratory to determine the
sound generated by the fixture/

given layout of fixtures is simply read
off the right side o{ the Chart.
The rooms chosen for calculating
NC levels have an acoustical tile ceil-
ing with a 0.65 Noise Reduction Co-
efficient and hard walls and floor with
a 0.50 Noise Reduction Coefficient.
(Note that room size has no effect on
the NC level.)
ln practice, the noise level wiil be
inaudible it it is equal to or lower
than the ambient (background) noise
level in the room because it will be
masked. For reference, the following
chart shows acceptable NC levels for
various types oI rooms.
Auxiliary Lighling
H.l.D lamps require a warm-up period
of up to ten minutes, be{ore reaching
full light output. Upon interruption of
power even momentarily. or a serious
voltage drop, the lamp may be extin-
guished. Belore it will re-strike, the
lamp must cool, which in most cases
takes as long as the initial starting
period.
To provide a minimum level of
illumination while waiting lor the
H.l.D lamp to warm up, or to cool to
re-strike lemperature, an auxiliary
lighting system is often provided.

Lightolieis AUX system uses a
tungsten-halogen lamP that will
operate whenever (1) power is
available and (2) the H.l.D lamp is
either off or warming up. The
tungsten-halogen lamp remains on
until the H.l.D lamp has reached
approximately 60 percent of its light
output. Normally the auxiliary lighting
feature will be incorporated in only a
few (perhaps 10 percent) of the H.l.D
fixtures in an installation.
Glass Guards
Standard mercury and metal halide
lamps carry a warning notice that if
the outer envelope of the lamp is
broken and the arc tube continues to
operate, the lamp can cause serious
skin burn and eye inflammation. lt
lurther cautions against the use of
these lamps where people will remain
exposed to a broken lamp for more
than a few minutes unless adequate
shielding or other safety precautions
are used. As a result, most metal
halide lamps musl be used in
suitably enclosed {ixtures. Lightolier
metal halide .fixtures include a stan-
dard glass guard to satisfy this re'
quirement, where aPPlicable. The
guard is also available as an option
for mercury f ixlures.
