Generation Gap

Generation gap means a lack of

communication between one generation and
another, especially between young people
and their parents, brought about by
differences of tastes, values, outlook, etc.

Generation gap can be a frustrating lack of

communication between young and old, or a useful
stretch of time that separates cultures within a
society, allowing them to develop their own
character."

History of the Generation Gap and

Differences

1. The drastic differences were not much

in evidence until the twentieth century.
Before that time, society was not very
mobile.

2. Young people typically lived near their

extended families, worshiped in their
childhood churches and often worked on
the family farm or in a family business.
With the advent of television and movies, young people
were exposed to cultural influences alien to their own
families and cultures. Performers like Frank Sinatra, Elvis
Presley and James Dean won adulation from the younger
generation but were often met with derogation from the
older generation. Then came the 1960s, and civil rights
and the Vietnam War which exposed a more serious
chasm between young and old.

3. Big difference in use of technology

and taste in music. Slightly behind these
areas of difference are listed the
following: Work ethic Moral values
Respect for others Political views
Attitudes toward different races and
groups Religious beliefs.

4. Technology and music are less

emotionally charged than political issues.
The older generation is likely to be proud
of the younger generation's prowess in
technology rather than to view it as a
problem. As for the musical differences,
each generation wants its own style of
music, and the older generation generally
can relate to that desire.

5. The younger generation tends to

regard the older generation as superior -
in moral values, work ethic and respect
for others - to their own generation this is
clearly a difference from the 1960s when
the young said "Don't trust anyone over
thirty."

Why todays generation might be a

good thing
Nowadays the younger generation is regarded as superior
in tolerance for different races and groups.
Once demarcated by political splits and cultural
touchstones, the separation between the generations is
now far subtler, defined by disparities in outlook, attitude
and specific behaviors rather than core values and
beliefs.

Comparison between different

generations
Differences between a kid and a
mother
1. My sons think nothing of leaving the house
and venturing out in public.

2. I use cash. They use debit cards for any

purchase over 24 cents.

3. When I travel, I pack in suitcases. They

grab the first vessel they can lay their hands
on: gym bag, backpack, plastic bag, pillowcase
whatever

4. I worry about losing my wallet. They worry

about losing their phone

5. If I am meeting friends, we will send

emails, confirm the location and, if dinner is
involved, make a reservation. My kids will text
their friends from the driveway and change the
location at least twice before making a final
decision. And they dont usually have just one
destination; for them, plans are a moving
target throughout the night.

6. I think established credibility and fierce

individualism in journalism, academia,
business are important. Their generation
believes market and crowd consensus are what
matter most.
7. I download apps and software that I need.
They download apps and software to find out
what will prove useful or fun.

8. I still believe good news can come out of

the mailbox. They think only junk resides there
and never (as in never) actually open it.

9. They think you cannot turn off a video

game until it is over. I have no idea why
(although I have a tough time putting a great
book down).

10. Because of social media, they still know

everyone they have ever known. I look back
and wish I could revisit moments with friends I
lost track of decades ago.

Personal Opinion
Based on what I have read and researched the
generation gap cannot be generalized. Its a
good way to get knowledge from both sides,
whether in terms of technology, innovation,
lifestyle, fashion or of ideological thoughts,
cultures and ideas in society (beliefs, politics,
behavior). Each one has their matters to
improve, both the world and the quality of
theirs life.
