WhatisExamination/InterviewAnxiety?
Haveyoueverfrightenedwiththeupcomingexamination/interview?Haveyoueverendedupin
poor performance only due to the fear? Have you ever kept thinking about your performance
despitehavinggoodpreparation?Idon'tknowwhatisyouranswerbutmyanswerisinaffirmative
ineachone.Yes,IhadfrightenedwiththethoughtofappearingintheExamination/Interview.Yes,
Ihadendedupinverypoorperformanceonlybecauseofthismonstrousfear.Andlastbutnotthe
least, I had kept myself thinking that I was going to make a blunder in examination. I might be
unabletoanswerthequestionsofinterviewerandmanymorelikethis.

Now, lets come to the main question, what is examination/interview anxiety? All the fears
described above from examination/interview especially the fear from bad performance in
examination begets the Anxiety, the Examination Anxiety. Some times, it is due to poor
preparationornopreparationatall.Butoftenithasnothingtodowithourlevelofpreparation.Itis
basicallyaconcernthatIhavetoperformverywellbutwhatifIcouldnot...
Isthereanywayout?
Yes,asSigmundFreudsaid"Everyeventispotentiallyastimulustothepositivesideofthe
personalityandanopportunitytostartafresh".Andthiswastrueinmycasetoo.

Iwastoappearina"TypingTest"forajob(Govt.Jobhahaha....).Thetypingtestwasthelast
stageofwholerecruitmentprocessandmywrittenexaminationwasalsogonegood.So,allhopes
ofgettingselectedorrejectedwascontingentonmyperformanceinthelasttest,typingtest.And
onethingmore,thatJobwasveryveryimportantforme.Also,Iheardabouttheanxiety&panic
duringthetypingtestwhichcausedhavocontheperformanceoffellowcandidatesandIwasreally
upset.

Then,beingastudentofPsychology,Ibegintosearchifthereisanywayoutinthebooksof
Psychology. Fortunately, I found that one. In technical term it is called Systematic
Desensitizationinwhichyouaresystematicallydesensitizedfromthefearingobjectsothatthey
become neutral for you and hence they would no longer be able to frighten you. But forget the
technicalityoftheterm&justfocusonitsmagicalpower.

Ipracticedthistechniqueonmyselfandgotridofthemonsterandperformedquitewellinthe
test(andthankgodselectedtoo,hahaha...).

Howdoesitwork?(HowtocopewithExaminationAnxiety?):
Theprocessaimstohabituateoneselfwiththefrighteningexamination/interviewsituationby
keeping oneself in a calm position so that when one face the real situation he/she will not
experienceanykindoffearorpanic.Themethodisdividedintotwopartsasdescribedbelow:
(a)PreparationoflistofEvents:
Forthesakeofconvenience,theprocessofappearanceinexaminationhasbeendividedinto
smalleventsinsuchawaythatlevelofanxietyshouldbeinascendingorder.Inotherwords,first
eventshouldbefarandthelastoneshouldbeveryclosetoexamination.Forexample:
1.Tomorrowismyexamination.
2.Todayismyexamination.
3.Iamgettingreadyforexamination.
4.Iamontheway.
5.Ihavereachedthevenue.
6.IamsearchingmyseatatExaminationHall.
7.Ihavetakenmyseat.
8.Questionpapershavebeendistributed.
9.IfilledinalldetailsinAnswersheet.
10.Finally,IhavestartedtoanswertheQuestions.
Ifyoulookattheaboveevents,youwillcometoknowthatthefirstonemaycausealittleanxiety
butthesecondonewouldcausemoreanxietythanthepreviousoneandsoon.Thisisbecause
youaregettingclosetotheExamination.
(b).Imagination:
Afterpreparingthewholelistofevents,yourhavetoimaginethemonebyonestartingfromvery
firstonebutkeepingyourselfcalm&relaxed.Now,firstly,liedownonbedandfeelveryrelaxed
and calm for five minutes. Deeply breadth in and breadth out keeping the eyes closed. Then,
imaginethattomorrowisyourexamination(firsteventofthelist)andobservewhatyourfeel.Ifyou
feel calm and relaxed, imagine that "Today is your examination (second event of the list) and
observethesame.Again,stillifyoufeelcalmandrelaxedimaginethenextevent(thirdoneinthe
list)andsoontilllasteventofthelist.Butifyoufeelanxietyorpanicatanyleveljuststopthe
imaginationandgobackandstartrelaxationforsometime.Afterrelaxing,imaginethesameevent
andagainobserve.Notably,youhavetomoveonnexteventonlywhenyouhavesuccessfully
imaginedtheprecedingeventwithoutanyanxiety.Whenyoucanimaginetheeventeasilywithout
anypanicoranxietyonlythenyouhavetomoveonthenexteventforimagination.Otherwisego
back and relax. One important thing on which you should not to confuse is that, when you feel
anxietyatanyparticularlevelyoudon'tneedtogobacktothepreviouslevelbutyouhavetogo
backtotherelaxingpose.Afterrelaxingyouhavetoagainimaginetheveryevent(onwhichyou
feltanxiety).Youhavetodoitimaginerelaxationimaginerelaxationuntilyouhaveimaginedthe
particulareventwithoutanyanxietyandpanic.

Finally,whenyousuccessfullyimaginedthelasteventofthelistthat"Ihavestartedtoanswer
